It was a buddies trip to Ireland and the course was Ballybunion. We started off in a drizzle, by the fifth hole it was raining pretty hard, then the wonderful wind started to blow. Now the rain started coming down in sheets and it was blowing sideways, the temperature started to drop into the 40’s. Couldn’t use an umbrella the wind was too strong. The caddy thought we should quit, but man this was Ballybunion. So play on.

My current irons are the Callaway Apex Pro 19. Waiting for the new Mizuno’s to come out in 24. Going back to an old favorite.
This post started me thinking of all the different irons I have played over the years. My first set were Spaulding Bobby Jones irons. I have played Ben Hogan, Macgregors, Wilson Staff, Tommy Armour, Ping Eye 2, Callaway,Titliest, and Mizuno.
I played the old Cleveland 588 wedge for probably 10 years until they finally ruined the design, now I am a Vokey guy.Oh by the way my golf goes back over 63 years.

I used Club Champion in 2017. I will never go back. The shaft in the driver was a discontinued model. The irons came with all different lies and lofts.
Fool me once, shame on you. -
I also think the Ping Eye 2 was a big game changer.
ping revolutionized the game with it’s clubs.

I joined a private club 16 years ago and never regret it. Yes it is a little expensive, but if you’re playing courses for say $50-$100 it really isn’t that expensive. The key is finding the right mix of people, they are what really make a club.
I was asked by a member to play with him and a group of guys about 20 in all. Besides being a great course and I played pretty well, the real selling point was their was no pretense of who you were, after the round we went up to the Members Bar and every single guy in the group came up to me shook my hand and said they hoped I would join the club. What a great welcome. It didn’t take long and I started playin in 3 different groups Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
There is a range with a short game practice area, 2 swimming pools, a great gym, and the clubhouse. All add value to my experience.

I am kind of boring with my grip choices, been playing the same grips for years now. They do get changed every year though.
Golf pride CP 2 on all clubs except the putter which sports a Scotty Cameron Mid Size.
I guess I don’t like change.

I have been using soapy water with brush and wipe with towel, let dry for about 20 minutes and they are good as new. I don’t think using sandpaper on grips is a good idea, it will wear a grip out pretty fast.
It does pain me when I see people just toss their clubs on the ground, the dirt they pick up adds to slick grips. These guys will only change grips when they get new clubs about every 6-7 years.

I start getting ready about 2 hours prior to my round. Get dressed, then get something to eat and start drinking water. I will go kiss the wife and she tells me to play well and have fun. Then off to the course I go, it is about 15 minute drive. I will have about 50 minutes to tee time. Go to the locker room and change into golf shoes, after that I will stop in the pro shop bs withe assistant pros then head on out. Straight to the putting green, roll some 3-5 footers then do a little lag putting. 30 minutes prior to my round I go to the range. Loosen up and work on rhythm , starting with a sand wedge, pitching wedge, 8 iron, 6 iron, a couple of fairway woods, finish with the driver. Over to the chipping area and hit several different shots. Now it is tee time and I am ready to go.

I believe Mizuno makes the best irons period. The look and feel is unmatched anywhere. Most golfers differ to the big OEM’s and never give Mizuno a look. Those that do play it begin to feel cult like with this club.

I have played most of the courses in North Myrtle Beach. Tidewater, Grande Dunes, Tigers Eye, and World Tour would be my picks.

Isn’t technology great. I played this game when 6700 yards was long for most courses. We didn’t have yardage books or yards marked in the fairway. We played by sight and feel. We walked because there wasn’t carts. But life goes on and we must accept change. What a great game this is.

Stick to your lessons on a regular basis. Then practice with a purpose.

Walk whenever I can. Coved has allowed walk anytime on my course.

I go by NCBOB, I live in Hampstead NC just north of Wilmington. I have played for over Sixty years. Recent back surgery has sent my handicap soaring, currently 11, the lowest I have been is a +2 and played a lot of competitive golf.
