Rain damaged Bushnell Tour v3

Last week I was out playing golf in a buggy and all of a sudden the heavens opened. My Bushnell Tour v3 was on the shelf inside the cart and I didn't dream that it wouldn't be able to handle a little rain on it, so I didn't rush to cover it. The rain didn't stop so we packed in after an hour's delay. I put the rangefinder in its bag and into my golf bag and never thought any more about it.

The next time I played, I took the Bushnell out to measure a shot and to my surprise the inside of the viewing lens was clouded so I didn't use it anymore that round. As soon as I got home I read some postings on the net and followed the advice of a few people who advised I put the Bushnell in a bag of dry rice grains. I actually put it on a plate inside a large drum of dry rice for a few days but when I took it out and replaced the battery it didn't work.

Has anyone got some bright ideas as to what I can do to revive it.

I've searched high and low for some instructions as to how I can take it apart.  Help.

Take the battery out, put it back in the rice and heat (outside sun if possible) and rice inside the battery compartment if it's sealed and let it sit there for another few dats.  My guess is there's still moisture inside.  If the battery is still powering the electronics while there's still moisture, then it's going to short out.  If this doesn't work, then I think your only option is to send it to Bushnell to get fixed.

Thanks but it's been in the drum of rice for many days now so I guess it's past the simple fix.

I live in Thailand so it's not easy to send it back to Bushnell but I have a friend whose going back to the UK soon so I'll ask him if he'll take it with him and post it to Bushnell on his return.

I'm just making sure, but that was without the battery inside the V3 right ?

Welcome from the U.S. Pacific Northwest!  Glad you joined us and sorry to hear about your Bushnell.  I love mine.

I don't think rice is that effective, contrary to popular belief. There are "recovery bags" made for this, but If it's been several days, damage may already have been done beyond just getting the remaining moisture out.

I'd agree with Kenny. If you google drying out smartphones you'll see that putting a device in rice is more of a urban legend than fact.

Guest Water fix to a Bushnell

March 2020      -     Just fixed my Bushnell Tour V4 Rangefinder that stopped working after bag and cart went into a creek.   You could see all the water droplets when looking through the viewfinder.  So, I put it in a bowl of rice and placed it in front of my fireplace for couple days when using said fireplace.  Now works great!

Take battery out, open up the case if you can, put into bag of rice for a few days, should be good as new if you didn't short out any of the chips.

I just fixed mine that had fell in a creek.

Tried rice and a hair dryer but none of that worked

End up taking it apart to fix it.  Found water tracks on the circuit board that were removed by polishing with a micro cloth.   To take it apart, remove the red rubber shell. Same with the black.  They just peal off.  Then you find 3 tiny screws holding the two haves of the white casing together. The white casing will separate and fold apart allowing the guts to be removed.  3 more tiny screws hold the circuit board on.  Remove those and inspect the circuit board for water stains. I polished it everything I could reach, even the ribbon cable between the lens and circuit board. Put it back together and it works fine.
