Yeah - you should put a fancy name on and market your basement plastic plate trainer gadget gizmo ;-)

 

But, I personally agree with the goal of die the ball at the hole speed.

I have the Putt Out trading aid and love it. Gets addicting trying to get it to stay on the little hole on ramp. Waiting to see if this translates on the course

I attended the Golf Expo in Boston this past week. Tried the Putt- rite not a fan. Only way to make it stay in the plate is to make it fall in the hole on last revolution. Seems to be against everything I hear about wanting to finish 18 in past hole. Maybe good if your someone that consistently blows it past

I'm a big fan of the PuttOut as well.

 

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems that if I aim to die the ball at the hole, anything short is necessarily a miss. While a ball that dies at the hole does maximize the capture size of the hole, that capture size doesn't move toward me

 

The whole idea of aiming for a spot just beyond the hole means that a perfectly-paced putt (one that goes to the point beyond the hole to which I'm aiming) does have a smaller capture size at the hole. But if my speed is a bit short, it can still go in.

 

And this isn't even taking into account one of my favorite Dave Pelz terms: the "lumpy donut," his argument that because it is the most high-traffic area on the green, there is a depression about a foot around the hole. Part of his argument for rolling for a target 17" past the hole is to counteract the effect of the lumpy donut.

Counterpoint: If you aim 17" past the hole and hit it a little too firm, now you've got a knee knocker you really didn't want.

 

Once you get outside 5 feet, the make probability drops off pretty dramatically. For me, I'd prefer to ensure an easy 2 putt and let a putt made be an added bonus.

Yeah, Pelz (I'm pretty sure) only argues for the 17" idea on putts you are trying to make. Otherwise, the idea is to lag it close.

 

Quite frankly, I'd love to see MGS run a test on this, to see which approach wins in SG. The challenge is that, to really test it, they would have to go outside on real greens, at least for part of the test.

Mmmmm... not too sure about this one MGB. I didn't buy his gravity explanation. On a closer look it appeared to me the lip of the cup was slightly rounded. At my course the cups are cut sharply. There is not a "black-hole" sucking a ball in from the lip. Unfortunately.

Like others I don't like the "die it in the hole" technique for most putts. IMO that leads to too many just short putts.

 

I've thought about a Putt-Out. Makes sense to me. Maybe I'll get one.

I wasn't endorsing the thing; just wondered if anyone had seen it in person. I actually got a Putt Out for Christmas. Just getting back on my foot, hoping to try it out SOON!!

Putt Out has a really good Twitter account too. Besides the giveaways they do, they really engage their followers. They retweet a lot of home videos people post using the thing too.

 

From what I can tell, it looks to be a decent putting aid if you can get a floor that runs at the right pace.

I fully recommend the Putt out. You'll keep trying to make that “perfect Putt” the one that stays on the ramp, before you know it you've spent 30 mins putting, that's a good thing

I have the putt out and love it. I recently watched a video form Axys golf and it changed my putting forever. This is all about biomechanics of the body and if you try his for set up positions it is insane how much control you have over the putter. This combimed with a metronome (free app) and my putting has been lights out.

Thanks for mentioning this. I looked up this video. I think I have picked up on a couple of those lock points but never tied them together. I did get one of those P2 putter grips that I think is promoting the wrist lock. I just didn’t like the shape. I might look into another one. I’ll have to practice all four locks together this winter to see how it goes.

I think there is some merit in starting to leave the ball right at the hole, but 5 ft seems a little close to start this strategy.  I suppose if it is a real nasty putt that has the potential to roll another 10 ft with just a bit extra on the tap. but most 5 footers we should be trying to make.

Have you read Broadie's "Every Shot Counts"?  I got the kindle version for pretty cheap.  The main purpose was to see what all this anti-Pelz blasphemy was all about.  It really didn't counter any of Pelz's conclusions, though.  Why was TIger so good?  He murdered the competition on the approach, which led to less putts, which added up to a lot of wins.  Does this mean I should spend my range time dialing in my 5 iron?  No.  Most hackers like me will probably see the most improvement with time spent practicing the short game, because I am not hitting that many greens from 200 yds out.  

Getting back on track, Broadie seemed to have more access to precise putt location data and found that short putt misses were clustering around 1ft (uphill) to 2.5ft (downhill) past the hole.  At 20 ft, pros are only leaving 23% of putts short.  At a distance of 30ft, the cluster was pretty much centered on the hole. So I am going to go with the Pros, not the Joes, and say that dying the ball in the cup at 6-20 ft is not the right strategy.  The pros aren't doing that until they are 30ft out.  (Hopefully all the data shows this, and not just the small sample taken for this example.)

I can think of only one side of one hole that I have played on in the last couple of years where I could set the ball completely outside of the cup and have it fall in.  Not a chance it would have happened on the other side.  So this was a really over-exaggerated example where he must have stepped all around the cup with his toe inside to get that to happen.  And that is just bad etiquette.
