Interesting article for practice junkies

Over time I have become more and more interested in this area.

http://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-found-a-technique-that-helps-you-learn-new-skills-twice-as-fast

I also bought a book called "The Practice Manual:  The Ultimate Guide for Golfers"  and I believe its going to use some of the same information.  I have not received it yet, but I am excited to start.

Anyone else interested in this kind of stuff?

Interesting. Maybe this is why I have found picking up an old putter of different weight and feel, gave me good results for awhile. I thought it was because I sensed the putter felt different and paid better attention.  The current putter had gotten stale; the revived putter called for better concentration because it was different.

There's nothing worse than "stale" equipment!

Very interesting - I would suspect that this means that if we are trying to learn some sort of new swing move doing so with a slightly different club each time makes sense ie. 6 iron to 4 hybrid to 6 iron to 8 iron - something like that.

It's actually what my teacher encourages - he also wants me to make 100 over the top practice swings each session - really - it's so difficult for me to make that move but I'm starting to get to where I'm getting divots that go straight to the target and shots that fly very straight on a boring trajectory rather than high draws that are picked clean.  That's the goal to have my "normal" ball flight be relatively neutral so that I can work the ball from there. :)

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I think it's got merit.

However, I read article the other day suggesting practicing more on the course. And that's just what I intend to do this year. After the time changes again in March we'll all start seeing longer days. Warmer weather too. This will be easy for me for two reasons. I live 5-8 minutes from the course. And our course thins out after about 6pm. It's an easy walking course where the first 4 holes on the front loop back to the clubhouse. On the back nine the first 5 holes play where you end up back at the club house. On either of those rotations you'll have a mix of par 3,4,5 with lots of scoring scenarios that could be setup for practice. Just endless possibilities to work on stuff. I've done this some in the past but this year I'm going start doing more of it. Kind of sounds more fun too.

I'm not trying to jack Mike Z's post but there is also another training/practice system-thought; brain-training system called Own My Swing. Last year sometime there was a post in the forum about it. I was very interested in at the time and contacted Howard Reisman; the developer of the system. If anyone is still interested here's a link to the site.

Last night Martin Hall on the Golf Channel was really encouraging viewers to buy the Practice Manual.  He didn't provide any detail or reason why we should buy it. It was really just a shameless plug. Anyway, I looked it up and read some reviews about it. It's on Amazon for around $22.

I haven't read it but; I came away with the impression that my eyes would probably glass-over within the first chapter or two. I think the book is around 400 pages?

Perhaps if there was an executive summary I'd be more interested.

I've been back and forth about buying it for a few months now. Right now I'm leaning towards buying it. I'm sure there are at least a few things that I could pick up out of it which would make it worthwhile.

Partway through the book.  I'm not through to the "good" stuff yet - I'm slogging through ball flight laws at the moment.  There is a snooze factor for sure.  But I also did thr preview on Amazon before I bought it and the pages were from somewhere in the middle of the book and quite a bit more interesting to me.  i have a feeling that its going to be like one of those movies that starts really slow but gets pretty good by the end IF you ever make it that far.

I have a hard time with an Author who misspelled practice repeatedly...

The author is a Scottish Olympic golf medal curler.  "practise" is the correct spelling there.

PJ, I used to practice on course a lot.  My little 9-holer was empty between 2-4pm.  I think you have to be careful when practicing on the course you normally play.  It's great because you can practice shots from locations where you normally hit the ball, as well as from where you don't want to hit the ball.     However, it can have unintended consequences.  When I practiced, I'd hit multiple balls from a location until I felt like I had the shot working well.  Later, when I played the course, I would muff the shot.  My problem was my mind still saw the shot as a practice stroke, and so there weren't consequences because I could just drop another ball.  It may not be problem for you, but I found that I have to eliminate the practice mentality when I play a round.  That's hard for me to do because I like to practice on the course, and I don't much care to practice on the range.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Kenny, I hear ya man. I said in another post somewhere around the forum that I planned to do more on course practice this year. I've done it in the past some and I thought it was helpful somewhat. At least different. Not sure if it actually helped my performance during actual play though. I'm still the same ole hack.

I'm relatively pleased with my swing mechanics so I do a lot more playing practice and on course practice then I have in the past. A lot of that is practicing different situations and conditions. Don't get me wrong though, I still clock in a lot of range time but I focus more on how I play the game then how I swing
