I'll follow this as my ball striking is getting better and want to see and research what some of the people recommend for irons. Although after reading about the new Mizuno Pro irons, I may try to find a place to hit the 245's

Wheelieb got a reaction from nvizble1 in Tell Us Your Best Golf Story
About a year ago a couple friends and I went out to play. We knew the round was going to be wild when the group ahead of us were on the first tee and they were all playing pranks on each other when they were trying to swing. Cool, we have no problem as we aren't tour pros or even club champs. We like to go out and have fun. Well hole 6 comes up and they are on the tee, we pull up and start talking with them and it became a sevensome starting on that hole. We were making bets about anything and everything we could, but we were good about it as we played like a scramble format to keep pace of play up. the guys who didn't hit their driver far wouldn't hit on driver holes but all the par 3's we all hit. Anyhow, the last few holes got way more interesting. Hole 14 became the I challenge you hole where I got challenged to hit over water to the green instead of playing it safe. If I didn't make it I had to pay for a round in the club house. No problem, cause if I did he had to buy that round. Well I hit and we saw a splash. I resigned myself to the fact I'm going to be paying an extra 60 bucks for beers in about 45 minutes to an hour. we drive around and my ball had hoped out of the water and was sitting about 2 feet away from it. He was buying drinks. The next hole I challenged him to a double or nothing on a dog leg left hole. He could hit his driver and get it around the corner and not hit any limb he wouldn't have to buy the round, but if he hit and limb he had to buy two. This guy hit and the ball was headed for the smallest limb, but there was a variable no one took into account. A hawk was flying by holding a fish in it's talons. dude's ball hit the fish knocking it out of the hawk's grasp but avoiding trees and cutting the corner. Never in  my life have I seen that. Probably won't ever see that again.

Following now. Only reason I said that was due to the previous President of Wilson wanting to move into more tennis and other sports, and not be as invested in golf. When he left and the new President came in, i believe when the D9 forged irons came out (also unsure of that time line), he wanted to get back to having golf as a big part of their company. I like Wilson clubs, they don't like me though. The first driver I bought was the Wilson Cortex driver. First set of irons I purchased, albeit used, were Wilson C300 irons that had 130 gram x-stiff shafts in them. Probably the worst decision I made cause I wasn't fitted for them. I then got the Wilson D9 that had 110 gram stiff Shafts in them. They were awesome, but the more I played with my buddy who plays a lot more than me explained spin and all sorts of stuff to me during me first few months of learning to play, and that these clubs were not a good fit for me either. We went to the Edwin watts in Florida and he had me hit the Ping G410 irons and I hit those great. So I traded in and got those. I Then went and got fitted for my PXG irons from a PXG guy in VA. Distance is great, but roasting my 7 iron 198 and my 8 iron only going 175 isn't conducive anymore. And my I went on a rant and apologize.

Just learned that my base has a simulator in the golf shop that I apparently became oblivious to. I’ve been in there so many times to pay for a round and just never noticed. Think I’m gonna start going there to get practice in and play some of the courses they have on there.

Wheelieb reacted to funkyjudge in 2024 New Drivers - What Is Your Favorite?
Although my local Golf Galaxy doesn’t have all of the new 2024 driver models in stock yet, they do have a few of them available for demoing on the simulators in-store. On Monday, I got to hit all three of the new Cobra Dark Speed drivers in various lofts, plus the standard and LS versions of the TM Qi10 and the new Ping G430 10K.  I was hoping to demo the Callaway Paradym AI Smoke driver, but that one won’t be available to hit until late next week.
in a nutshell, here are my initial impressions based on that in-store experience:
Cobra Dark Speed - although I was expecting good results from these drivers, I could never really get them dialed-in. I set them aside and hit the other new drivers (plus some fairway woods) and came back to the Cobra drivers later, but still had trouble finding the center of the faces on any of them, so results were not at all good, which is as expected.
TM Qi10 - the standard model was better for me than the LS, but neither was a standout, and neither gave me improvements in any of the driver metrics when compared to my current gamer (Callaway Paradym X with PX HZRDUS Black 4G 6.0 shaft).
Ping G430 10K - Best of the bunch, and comparable to both my Paradym X and the 2023 G430 Max driver that I own (and am currently trying to sell, because I am more consistent, and thus have more confidence in, the Paradym X).
I am certainly interested in hitting the new Callaway AI Smoke drivers, and will do so once they become available to demo.

I mean, Edwin Watts you went in and they ran through all the heads and shaft options to include the stock options and you could see those numbers. Of course the workers are still going to get paid by the store. I’m not saying they aren’t getting paid by them. What I am saying is they aren’t getting paid by the oem to sell you their products or pressure you into buying aftermarket shafts that perform the same as a stock shaft you hit.

Again, This is why I miss Edwin Watts in Florida. You go into any of their stores and fittings are free. They know they will get a sale regardless so why make you pay for it if they aren't getting any commission? That's how fittings should be. You should not have to pay to get fit for clubs. That's my opinion though.

I will give mine a thorough inspection this evening after work. Mine will be a year old in March and at first I had head covers on them but then lost a few so I stopped covering them so they get bounced around in the bag.

That's a stretch, at best.  I have the same D7's you mentioned earlier since new with close to 200 rounds plus practice and have absolutely no problem of the finish flaking/cracking/breaking off.
@Jay 1971, sorry for the thread diversion.  Normally the weak areas on irons like yours are the badges they place or glue in the cavity. Those are known to get beat up, lose paint and fall out over time with almost all brands (Wilson & Mizuno included).  Finishes flaking off is not common though.  Hopefully your golf shop takes care of you.  Keep us posted on your results.

I'm not saying you did anything wrong, this is just my experience. I had been playing some Wilson D7 clubs that were bought new. I played quite a few rounds with them and the same thing started happening to the back of them. I chalked it up to them hitting each other in the bag while riding around the courses and the cart paths being worse than I-95 going through North Carolina. Maybe that's what happened?

That's fair, there is probably a significant amount of quality control between Mizuno and Wilson as well with Mizuno probably being higher on that than Wilson

I dont dispute your theory its a good one!  Just my experience with 800s was not the case.  I also understand why the knock off statement was made because a lot of Mizuno Knock offs came from China.  I suspect neither are his issue though!

High-Handies golf tourney tomorrow here in Central Florida.  Teeing off in likely sub 40° temps.  Don’t hesitate to share any tips to minimize the cold weather impact!  Never played this cold.
