Just wondering how the shaft bend profile would compare between a set of taper tip .355 iron shafts vs their .370 parallel tip counterparts.  Same original shaft weight.  Specifically building a single length set to 37”.  So you would have to butt trim only the TT shafts, but trim 3” ( or so) off the parallel tips.  Would those bend profiles look the same and play the same?

My educated guess would be that no, they will not play exactly the same. Similar, maybe. You'd have to test.

  2. After watching one of the videos on the Be Better Golf YouTube channel with the inventor of the DST Compressor, I've been more mindfully working on my takeaway. I'm trying to feel like I'm getting my left shoulder more underneath my chin. I've changed a lot in my swing since starting over last summer, but one thing that rears its head often is a very flat shoulder turn and an inside takeaway. Hearing the way Bertie described the takeaway, its relation to proper weight shift and the hands being forward at impact (creating "lag tension" as he calls it) resonated well in my head.

We're supposed to see near 60 degree temperatures next week which should get a lot of the snow off of the ground. Hoping to play a round before the end of March with some of these new swing changes!

  3. I had been eyeing Maltby PTMs as an entry into DIY club building. Not particularly looking for forged irons, but these have very understated looks that I really like. After my experience with badges falling off my C300s (which happened again with the replacement 5 iron - the adhesive doesn't hold in cold Michigan temperatures apparently), I've been looking for a forgiving iron that doesn't use any sort of badging.

Unfortunately, the PTMs are $35/head. Once you add in shafts and grips, they would get expensive pretty fast. I do like my C300s, I'm just looking to tinker so I don't want to spend a ton at the moment.

Was scrounging eBay for deals this morning and happened across a set of 2004 Hogan Apex CFT irons, 3 and 4 hybrids and 5-PW, from Mike's Golf Outlet. Popped over to their site and found they had a 10 percent off and free shipping deal. They look to be in great condition, but they are +1" and the original Apex regular graphite shafts. For $81 I snapped them up, basically looking at it as a $13.50/head cost. These have no badging and are beautiful heads. Additionally, the CFTs were the most forgiving of the Hogan clubs from that time.

I plan to remove the shafts, remove paintfill, polish, new paintfill and then add some new shafts and grips that are yet to be determined. Have some cool ideas for color combos and ferrules, etc.

Not an earth-shattering purchase, and one that won't really affect my game for a bit since I already have great irons in the C300s, but I'm very excited to have found some good looking game improvement clubs that I can make my own.

I would seriously suggest getting a board or mat to put under your feet to give yourself an even lie.  Right now you are practicing chipping with the ball consistently one inch above your feet which could cause some bad habits when you get to some neutral lies.

One of my biggest concerns with my little mat in the basement...

Keep at it, @GolfSpy MPR. Love following your progress. We'll eventually have playable weather in Michigan.

    1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?  I've been hitting golf balls since I was in 1st grade but I did not get serious about golf until the end of high school.  My handicap is between a 4 - 7 depending on the course and time of year.

    2. What do you love about golf?  I love being outside, hanging out with my friends, and the feeling of hitting good shots.

    3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?  I found MyGolfSpy through instagram and who doesn't want to be part of a golf nut forum.

    4. Where are you from? What is your home course?  I am from Warren, MI and my home course is Burning Tree CC

    5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?  The best thing is we have alot of beautiful golf courses in Michigan, but the bad thing is we can only play for 5 - 6 months before the winter hits.

    6. What do you do for a living?  I work in Quality Control.

    7. How’d you pick your user name?  I use to caddy at a country club and my name tag said Caddie13 so it just stuck.

    Welcome from a fellow Michigander!

Hi everyone! Love this website and am making the jump to introduce myself.. my name is Zac. I have been playing since Granpa cut some clubs down for me when i was 6-7 sooo that would make it about 40 years! Yikes! My handicap is 3.4 as of the the end of the season in MN, but I can tell you after 3 rounds in Phoenix a couple weeks ago you can double that right now..Always happy to break 80 which I do pretty consistently.I love  the personal struggle that golf is and how to handle it."golf IS life" Also the social aspects of meeting new people and most of my life long best friends are regulars in our foursomes..As a professed gearhead i love MGS as a place to read reviews from your average golfer..and I do know a couple fellow spies. From Minnesota born and mostly raised. My home course is Blackberry Ridge Golf Club in Sartell,MN where I am the assistant superintendent so that takes care of the "what i do for a living" part.. truly the greatest job in the world minus digging up irrigation leaks...The best part about MN golf is we can grow the most amazing bentgrass anywhere in the country..the worst part is it only grows for about 6 month of the year if we are lucky..haha User name? one step backward one step forward..

Welcome from West Michigan. Had the chance to play a couple courses near Minneapolis last fall and was impressed.

Seeing a bit of a trend here with hybrids being mentioned fairly often...interesting...I guess I'm not the only one to not get along so well with them. I have a G-Series 3H that I re-shafted and can't hit it at all now.😡 So this one may be a bigger boner for me than my my first, ugly set mentioned above...

Yup, I could have added two Tour Edge Hot Launch 2 hybrids I bought last summer when I was down on my game. Now, I don't think there was anything wrong with those particular hybrids, but I just don't get along with hybrids period. Something about them just gets into my head.

After a day of golf and a night of drinking bought a driver from a late night informercial.  Iron Byron crushed this driver further than every other driver they compared it to.  Had to have it, lasted 2 rounds in my bag.  I wish I could remember the name of it.

Reminds me of when my wife's grandmother passed away. She was an avid golfer up to a few months before her passing. When we went through her golf bag, we found she had purchased a Hammer driver from the late night infomercial on the Golf Channel.

My mother-in-law still has the club. I should borrow it sometime this summer for some range fun.

  9. Great idea for a thread.

I fell for the whole white driver craze a few years back. Bought an Adams Speedline Super LS driver solely because of the white crown and black face. Really was a sexy club. Couldn't hit it to save my life, though. When I finally bought a used Cobra AMP for cheap last summer, my driving ability went up significantly without much change to my swing.

Knowing what I know now, I should have bought the Adams S driver which was the more forgiving of the two offerings from Adams in that line. I know both were in the shop for roughly the same price, but that was also my first adjustable driver, so I think that's ultimately why I chose the Super LS.

  11. Hi, everyone. I did one of these in the old format, but thought I'd join in here, too.

How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score?

I first played golf when I was in elementary school. I grew up on a farm and had plenty of lawn to smack balls around using some old clubs my father had. Despite farming being nearly a full-time job in itself, he worked an office job during the day and occasionally played golf for business meetings. My first on course memories are playing a local short course with him a few times, maybe once a year, until I was 12 or 13.

I played baseball in high school, but the summer after getting my license I started to play more golf with my friends. I started with my uncle's set of Walter Hagen blades and Persimmon woods. I got my first "real" set of clubs, a RAM G-Force box set with a 460cc driver and cavity back irons, that Christmas. I played a lot through college, getting new Nike CCI cast irons my freshman year (which I just sold in January) and broke 90 once the fall of junior year when I was playing three times a week.

After college my wife and I moved around a lot, spending several years in Wyoming and New Mexico, before making our way back to Michigan in 2017.

Last spring, after having a disastrously embarrassing golf outing for work, I decided to completely start over with my swing and dedicate more time to golf. I've never taken a formal golf lesson, so piecing together a brand new swing from YouTube and the Internet took all summer, into fall and finally has taken hold this winter. I have played two nine-hole rounds with this new "work in progress" swing, shooting in the mid 40s in difficult conditions both times. My goal for this summer is to break 90 on 18 (par 72), or 42 on nine (par 36). There are a few "easy" nine holes around me, hence the lower nine hole score.

I completely revamped by bag this past fall and winter as well. I have a new driver, 3 wood, irons, putter and wedges since last summer, and I am playing a few different kinds of new balls (Srixon Q-Star Tour, Taylormade Project (a), Snell MTB and Vice Pro will be first up in testing).

I also recently built a set of DIY SuperSpeed sticks and started training this week. After two trainings the green (lightest) club is up to about 120 mph average, which should translate to about 100 mph driver speed. My goal is to get the green club up to 130 mph average. I do large compound lifts (squats, deadlifts, overhead press, rows, bench) three times a week and do weighted isometric golf holds in addition to the SuperSpeed training.

I also just purchased a DST Compressor 8 iron and am excited to get to work with it.

I would also eventually like to venture into modifying/making my own clubs, and DIY work like re-gripping clubs for friends and family.

What do you love about golf?

I've always been a competitive person. After playing baseball in high school, golf has filled a competitive niche for me. It's always fun to try to better your game and score. In that way, golf is also extremely humbling. Struggling like I did last summer really put a lot of life into better perspective. Golf is just a game after all, and it should be fun.

What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies?

I've been a long-time reader of MyGolfSpy and love the objectiveness of the testing conducted. And, unlike some other Internet golf forums, the people here are incredibly helpful and insightful. I do not know other Spies. However, I do know there are several from Michigan and some that are pretty near me. It'd be fun to get together sometime for a round.

Where are you from? What is your home course?

I am from West Michigan. I do not have a home course, though some of my favorites in this region include Diamond Springs Golf Course in Hamilton and Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University in Allendale. We have several other great courses in the area. My goal for this season to is play Cedar Chase in Cedar Springs and The Mines in Grand Rapids.

What are the best and worst things about golf in your region?

The best thing about golf in West Michigan is the absolute plethora of courses to choose from. Growing up, there were probably 8 golf courses within a 20 minute drive of my home. Currently, I can think of more than 10 that are within 20-30 minutes of my residence.

The worst thing about golf in Michigan is the weather. If you are well equipped and willing to play in less than stellar conditions, you might be able to play from mid-March to beginning of November. I played nine holes in January this year, and could have played more days if I had better cold weather gear. Although since late January we've had more snow than most years, and I doubt I'll be able to get out again until late March.

Offseason options are also extremely limited in West Michigan, with there only being two driving ranges that I know of with heated stalls. Simulators here are ridiculously expensive. The east side of the state is much better in that regard, or so I've been told.

What do you do for a living?

I work in IT. My background before IT was in sports journalism (you'll notice I hate Oxford commas). I apologize for the long-winded post, but I still love to write. I've had some amazing opportunities because of that, including working at the National Baseball Hall of Fame for a summer. Some of my writing has been published in the Denver Post and also in a book by the Hall of Fame.

How’d you pick your user name?

I'm Cody, that's where the C is from. Add my last name and you've got my username.

I'm late to this thread but I'm intrigued. I'm also planning for this year to be a huge improvement year for my game.

I found a club about 5 minutes from my work and 10 minutes from my house that I have a meeting with this week to take a tour. If it works out I plan to take my lunch break and go hit balls whenever I don't have lunch meetings. Hopefully 3 times a week.

I would love to get to a 15 handicap and break 90 a couple of times this year. Anything better than that is just gravy. Maybe I too will start a thread if I commit to joining this club.

Yeah, this thread has me inspired as well. I spent so much of last summer completely lost in regards to my swing. Didn't get started down the right track until nearly middle of September, and then I only had four weeks of OK weather to play with.

I'm lucky to have a driving range, putting green and sand trap/chipping practice area about a minute's drive from where I park at work. My hope this summer is to hit balls twice a week and chip/putt another two days. I'm trying to swing taking some vacation time every Tuesday morning throughout the summer as well to sneak in nine holes before work.

That's been my experience - on both of your points. Not a perfect LM but for the price you can't go wrong.

CG2 mentioned a SC300 that he saw at the PGA show but I can't find any data on it. Maybe some additional options or capabilities?

Looks like the big new stats are apex and launch angle. Also looks like they will be releasing Android and iPhone apps that pair with the device.

At $549.99, I'd probably start looking at the Flightscope Mevo instead.

Radar based LMs measure BALL speed, and distance, and then extrapolates clubspeed and uses that for smash factor. Radars can't actually measure the club head. So yes, you will need to use real balls.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Voice Caddie reads both actual club speed and actual ball speed, and then calculates smash factor and expected carry distance (with barometric pressure and temperature factored in from actual environmental conditions). This is why the SC200 can display very incorrect carry numbers if a ball is shanked or hooked heavily -- it only knows about clubhead and and initial ball speed in that calculation and no spin or ball flight is taken into account.

I have hit foam balls in my backyard and the clubhead speed seems to be relatively accurate. Ball speed, smash factor and carry distance are obviously way off.

As an FYI range balls may cause you to get readings that are a bit low also.  You'll notice that once the weather gets better and you bring it out on the course while using your regular ball.  It's like a fitting where you should use the same ball type that you regularly play.  Of course you can't do that on the range and the difference is only a few MPHs but you will hit a regular ball farther than a range ball, most of the time.

I love my Voice Caddy by the way.  Enjoy

Spot on, @revkev. I have had the Voice Caddie out three times now using cold range balls in heated outdoor stalls. Ball speed and smash factor yesterday were very low, not surprising given the cold (and heavily worn) range balls. I was able to get out on the course once in January before Snowpocalypse gave us this recent awful weather, and my carry was routinely better than with the range balls.

Just want to raise and hand and shout reverend.  This has helped me out tremendously off the tee.  Not sure if it's due to playing off the rack or not.  Definitely not saying it will help you @GolfSpy MPR, but I am a firm believer in ball placement for my own game.

Looking forward in following your journey this year!

If you poke around the Be Better Golf YouTube channel, one of the teachers he meets with advocated this as well. Especially if you want to hit up on the ball.

I will be making the 2:45 drive to Sycamore on the 26th. I scheduled a fitting with them so I will get on here and give you guys my uneducated 2 cents worth. I’m sure another member on here will be able to chime in on them as well as he will be coming along with me. He’s a much better player than I am so you can hear what a 22 handicap has to say about them and what a +3 handicap has to say about them.

Got my p790’s today. They were described as “mint”, 9.8/10, and having been played only one round.

well, if he shot a 350 for that one round, then maybe... but the clubs have obviously been hit much more then described. Still pretty nice, and probably still a good deal, but nothing close to “one round”, mint”. With that tho, they’re probably still a 8.5/9, so I’m still pretty pumped. Plus what pissed me off the most was his packing for shipment. He just put them in a box and taped it shut. Zero clubhead protection for shipping.  Nice to get a little head start on some chatter eh? So anyways, all I could really do was to mention those things in his feedback, and hopefully he’ll do better next time.

now I can’t wait for tomorrow morning and check these bad boys out!

Bummer that they couldn't have wrapped bubble wrap around the heads. That's pretty lazy, in my opinion. But still very glad you are happy with your purchase! I'm sure you saved a bunch off the new price.

  19. The driver, fairway wood and irons in my signature came from eBay. Paid $180 combined for the driver and fairway wood from Dallas Golf, both were advertised as new with headcover and tool. Both showed up in the original Cobra packaging and were exactly as described.

The irons were purchased in "very good used condition" from Diamond Tour/Hurricane Golf for $269.99, or about 66 percent off new retail price (they are still current model). I used a 10 percent off eBay coupon during the holidays. I was shocked when I received them as most of the clubs had obviously never been hit and only a few were hit indoors as demos.

Now, I did have a problem with two of the badges/medallions falling off of the clubs shortly after purchasing them. After going around with Wilson support, I reached out to Diamond Tour and they took care of me with their Wilson rep. Wilson specifically states their warranty does not apply to sets purchased on eBay or Craigslist. But Diamond Tour helped me out majorly.

As long as I'm buying from reputable sellers, I don't have any problems with eBay. But I think some of the advice in this thread about spotting fakes is something to definitely keep in mind. Often, if it's too good to be true, it probably is!

  20. 3 minutes ago, jlukes said:

The wilson c300s are extremely strong lofted, so with a gap wedge 48* he might be able to only fit in two more wedges in his bag.

I did notice that he doesn't have anything between his 3W and 4i so he could potentially have another wedge if he doesn't need a 5W or 3H.

Assuming he is going to add another club at the top of his bag and his gap wedge is 48*, a 54 and 60 solution would be fine if it covers the yardages he wants to play.

Another option would be to go 52 (bent to 53) and 58.

That's awesome stuff J! one of the many benefits of this site is great stuff like this!

    Agreed. Very helpful.

As you can tell, I'm still tinkering. This is the first time I've seriously committed to playing golf better and also the first time I heavily researched anything before buying. I started last summer with a low-spin, unforgiving driver (Adams Super LS) and irons that were a little too much for my skill set (Nike CCIs). Truthfully bought both because of their looks and name rather than for their fit to my game.

It is correct I still do not have something between my 3W and 4 iron. Not sure what the best play is there yet. I really struggle with hybrids, so I've considered a 5W in that spot. Until I improve and get a little more distance out of my driver (a great shot for me right now is 225 carry, but generally sit between 92-94 MPH driver speed with closer to 210 carry), I start running into gapping issues at the top of my bag with the 3W/5W/hybrid/4 iron all coming pretty close to each other.

I play a lot of shorter courses and par 3s with my in-laws, who are in their 60s and don't hit the ball very far. So, up until now I've rarely had a need for too many clubs at the top or bottom of the bag. Generally, for the past two golfing seasons it was a 5-PW off the tee, a 56* to chip if I missed the green, and then the putter.

I played a short par 36 last weekend and did not use the 3W once, opting for the driver, 4 iron or 5 iron off the tee, depending on the distance I wanted to play in.

I really do think I will eventually want to add that 5W, or perhaps a driving iron (hah!) if I ever get my ball striking where is should be. And because of that, I think I am going to go ahead and start with the 54* and 60*. They are at least reasonable in price, so should I change my mind I can also order another one and swap them myself. Worst case I end up with a wide variety to choose from based on the course.
