  1. Shot a 44 (+8) this morning before heading to work. Round featured a little of everything, good/bad drives, good/bad irons, good/bad wedges and good/bad putting.

I was the first person out at 7:15 AM, beating the owner and maintenance crew, and it was awesome having the course to myself.

Double-bogeyed both par 5s which really hurt my score. I also three-putted from 15 feet on No. 5. That sucked.

The par 3s on this course get me, and I bogeyed both. They should be simple (they're straight with greens only perched up a bit), but they both play into the wind and one was playing about 196 yards today. Too much for my 4-iron.

Highlight of my round was a birdie on No. 4 after a smashed drive to a tight fairway. More on that in the Epic Flash review thread.

Mindset is tough. A year ago I would have been ecstatic to post a 44, but now it just feels like an average or even below average round. Oh well. Still early in the season and lots to work on.

Shot a full round this morning in exactly 2 hours, and shot well,  37/37, 74.

had my first, at least that I can think of , 100% fairways hit. But only 55% of GIR. 30 putts. I think at that speed, I’m not even thinking, everything is just auto pilot.

Riding I assume? I played by myself this morning, walking nine, and it took me 90 minutes!

    Very nice round.

  3. Had a beautiful afternoon Saturday for a quick nine holes. Snowy and rainy weather closed my preferred course all weekend, so I ended up at the same "pasture" I played last weekend.

Continued my consistent play, shooting 44 (+8) on the front nine with no three putts. Remove two shorted chips and a provisional tee shot on No. 8 and it would have been even better.

On the first par five I stuck a 60 degree lob wedge from about 55 yards to within 3 feet and sunk the birdie putt. Best approach shot I've hit in a long time.

Had two super slow groups in front of me, so I ended up inviting the solo behind me to join. Had a lot of fun chatting, made the round enjoyable.

To give you an idea about the quality of this course ... On the third hole I could not tee off from the blue tee box because it was occupied by an extremely drunk homeless person rummaging through the trash. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  4. We had a lot of rain Thursday evening into Friday morning, so I had to call around today to find a place that was open. I had been itching to take the Epic Flash for another spin. 45 degrees with sustained 15 mile per hour wind made for an interesting round. I would guess we are still two or three weeks away from good golfing weather.

Local pasture was open, $1 per hole. Walked 18, shot 45-41/86, which is +15 from the tips at about 5,600 yards. Front nine was surprisingly in great shape and mostly dry, back nine not so much, but I parred all three par threes on the back which really helped my score. I can't recall ever shooting a 41 before (though the back is a par 35).

Ironically, I don't feel like I played well. I really struggled with everything beyond 50 yards today, but my game from inside 50 made up for it. I putted very well with only one three putt. Though, to be fair, the greens at this course are absolutely tiny (the last par three green is about 1,600 square feet) so once you're on the green you are not far from the hole no matter the pin placement. I also had two really great chips and a few solid pitches.

Two fun notes for todays round:

    1) I accidentally played hole 11 twice, once as the second hole and once as the 11th. The way the course is routed, holes two and 11 are located parallel to each other directly off the first green. They play almost the same distance and the green complexes are identical. I hadn't played this course in a while and wasn't paying attention to the sign near the tee. Whoops.

    2) I lost a ball in the fairway. I hit a five iron into a wet spot, saw it splash and walked up to find it in a puddle full of water and leaves, almost a foot deep. Attempted to pull the ball out with a club but buried it further in. Was too cold to go reaching in with a hand, so the course literally ate my ball.

I choked and then I choked again. One of the best ball striking rounds I have ever had. Standing on 15 tee and was -5. Problem was that I didn't realize I was that deep. Saw it on Arccos as I was entering putts, proceeded to bogey 3 of last 4 holes. 😥

    71

    33 38

    9/14 FW

    12/18 GIR.

    29 putts.

I laughed out loud this morning at this, only because I'm transferring that feeling to my 18th hole on Sunday. Of course, I was standing on 18 tee +4 for the nine already, and I remember thinking, "OK, a five gets me home with a 45 on the back." I proceeded to hit my drive behind a tree, topped a 5 iron while trying to get out from behind it and then fatted an 8 iron. Ended up with a double bogey six and 46 for the nine.

  6. Today was a major letdown after last week's 85. Went 50/46 to finish with a +24 96 on what is probably going to become my home course. Walked all 18 holes in beautiful spring weather.

    Positive outcomes from today's round:

    • Epic Flash feels fantastic.
    • Getting a little more forward bend at address really helped with my takeaway. As a result my ballstriking was better today, the results were "Eh," however.
    • Hit more fairways than before.

    Not-so-positives:

    • Only mustered two pars and no GIRs (yikes!).
    • Hit a ton of trees.
    • Chipping wasn't great.
    • Putting was terrible. Lots of three putts.

This course was purchased by a new owner about three years ago. He has made a lot of improvements, but it is still in dire need of help. Several tee boxes were dirt, moles ravaged others and everything needed a good roll to smooth it out. Didn't have many good lies today. Still early in the season (they just opened) and greens were in good shape, albeit slow.

Back to the range for more practice!

  7. I played 18 today at Scott Lake Country Club north of Grand Rapids, another course I had never played before. $30 for 18 holes and cart, winter rates. I had only intended on walking nine, but the weather meant I had the course to myself and finished in three hours. I started playing in 38 degree temperatures and a light drizzle, and it didn't get much warmer. Course played 5,625 yards from the white tees, total par of 70, and it was still very wet in spots.

Shot an 85! 42-43, and unfortunately had a major blowup eight on the second nine after hooking my first drive out of bounds. Could have, and should have been better! One of my goals for this season was to break 90, and I'm going to go ahead and count this even though it was a par 70.

The good: Thanks to @Shankster, my chipping was much better today. Last week it cost me a lot of strokes around the green. Today I had a few "bad" chips, but my misses today were much more tolerable than last week. My putting was pretty good, too, once I figured out I was setup too open to my line about two or three holes in. My course strategy was also good again today. All in all, had two birdies so I'll never be upset with that.

I also got to whip out the new Epic Flash and was impressed! Stage one review will be coming soon!

The bad: My ball-striking was horrific. This is a direct holdover from an absolutely terrible range session yesterday. Mentally, I wasn't confident over the ball until very late in the round. I can't continue to play that way. When I play tight like that, my swing gets all out of sorts, my swing speed goes way down, etc. "Thin it to win it," was definitely a motto for me today, and I know I even yelled that a few times trying to coax the ball into the right spots. Thankfully almost all of my misses were playable.

I also was not impressed with parts of the course. The last six or so holes on the "Gold" nine are very awkwardly designed. They play down to and around Scott Lake (hence the name), but the holes are just stupidly run up-and-down over gigantic hills. This is culminated by a 534-yard dogleg-left par 5 where you must hit a long iron about 200 yards off the tee up a massive hill to a blind layup spot. This leaves you with 300-plus yards in to the green. I'm all for working with the natural contours of the land, but this was a little ridiculous.

Another miscue - I played Red/Gold, which was opposite of the orientation in GAME Golf, so it didn't track correctly and I only got nine holes figured out. Oh well.

Best hole: I birdied the opening par 5. I hit a five iron about 195 yards down to the landing spot in front of a gully. Another five iron (thinned!) to right of the cart path short of the hole, 54 degree to the green. Knocked in a 10-15 footer for birdie.

20 inches without phone installed.  Just got it yesterday and haven't taken it out to the course yet, but I did test the remote firing button with my phone and it works perfectly (bluetooth)

Definitely let us know what you think about it. I bought an Amazon Basics tripod with cell phone holder last year. Works great, but I'd love to have a remote so that I don't have to record such long periods and cut later.

Had time to kill while the woman did woman stuff and stopped at the local shop to roll some of these stroke labs. They just happened to have a double wide flow, in 33", with the oversized grip. Tried the #1 and #3 but didn't feel as good to me, I think the blade length throws me off? Maybe it is something I could get used to, but I was more successful with the double-wide anyways, so I brought it home with me emoji41.png. Also grabbed a couple GP Tour Velvet +4 to try.

    Beautiful!

  10. This was my best one from Sunday's round, on the final hole. Dog leg right, with a big tree on the corner, so no driver. Had been hitting the 5 iron great all day, so I aimed at the tree playing a slight draw. Executed perfectly (though with leaves later in the season I may have had some trouble). Very uphill approach to green, pin in sucker position between the two bunkers. Played at the pin, assuming I'd draw a bit. Hit straight, but perfect distance, leaving 10 footer for birdie. Birdie putt finished right at the hole, but two inches left, leaving a tap in par.

Very pleased with the strategy on this hole.

  11. Shot a 10-over 45 on the red course at Saskatoon Golf Club outside of Grand Rapids for my first real round of the year. Never played there before, though my brother-in-law holds this course in high esteem. We had absolutely beautiful weather today, wish I could have played more.

Hit one fairway all day, and only two greens. Going over my GAME Golf stats, I can count seven strokes I could have cut. Hopefully with a little practice I will get rid of those strokes.

Really only hit two bad shots today. Snap-hooked a five iron on hole three that thankfully stayed only a little left of the green. On the only par 5, I chunked my second shot with my 4-iron and only advanced it 35 yards or so.

On an interesting note, leaving the pin in cost me one stroke today. I didn't notice the pin was leaning slightly on a three footer on No. 7. Hit a nice putt that would have dropped in the right side. Instead, it brushed the pin and lipped out two inches past the hole.

  12. Things I've been working on this week now that I can hit foam balls outdoors:

    1) In an effort to get length on the backswing over the past month, I had started to pull my head away and down. This caused all sorts of fat and high shots. I'm now working on maintaining a steady head vertically, allowing a good turn into my back leg. This allows some lateral movement of the head, but no vertical movement during the backswing.

    2) Secondary tilt at address. After my Epic driver fitting, I realized I was standing far too straight at address and never getting secondary tilt.

    3) Feeling like my right palm is facing the ground during the takeaway. This keeps my hands in front of me at the top. Not surprisingly, this also ensures both the left and right wrists can only flex in their correct positions.

    4) A byproduct of the lack of secondary tilt was that I was wrenching my left shoulder down trying to get into a "powerful" position. I suspect this is what cause my recent back pain, and also contributed to a whole host of problems later in the swing. I now am focusing on feeling my shoulder move on a more level plane. It's a very odd feeling to me, but the video confirms that I am rotating perpendicular to my spine angle correctly now.

Amazing how all of these little things tie together. Really emphasizes the importance of setup, takeaway and backswing.

Interesting - do you see a difference in the data with it resting on the ground vs elevated (on the box). Unfortunately, I threw my box away so can't compare.

Hmm, that's a good question. I think I just saw that note in a review of the SC200 somewhere and repeated it verbatim. I do use the box when I hit drivers off mats so that I don't worry about the SC being too close. With wedges, if I play off the front of the mat, I can just place the SC on the mat to match the height.

I would think, though, you'd want as little obstruction in front of the SC for the best readings. I suppose it would depend on the height of the mats, as well. I'd just be worried the lip from the mat would interfere with the radar somehow.

So I built a driving net this year.  Reading posts on this forum, I saw several people recommend using a mesh tarp from Harbor Freight.  I think I spent about $25 on the net. It was 10'X12'.  I purchased 1 1/2" PVC for the frame.  I used 4-10' sticks.  The frame demensions are 8'X8' and had 2' supporting legs from the remnants. I secured the net with zip ties.  I probably spent $50 dollars for the frame.  It works really good as far as I can tell.  Keep your tarp loose, so it absorbs the energy from the ball.  I stand fairly close to the net, (at least closer than the booths at golf shops).  It was a fun little project, and now I can at least hit golf balls regardless of the weather.

    golf practice set up.jpg

How's the durability of the tarp? I was looking at getting a Parbuster Impact Panel (https://www.parbuster.com/collections/golf-impact-panels/products/ultra-duty-delta-impact-panel), but this would be significantly cheaper. I do plan to run netting behind the panel as well as a "just in case" contingency.

Looking at upper 50's this coming weekend....should finally be time to tee it up, courses should be opening this week.  Damn I hate winter.

    (NE Indiana)

North of you, I'm looking at low to mid 50s Saturday and Sunday. Excited to get out. One of the local courses already sent an email saying they plan on opening for the year on Thursday.
