Getting old sucks-

Approaching 62.

So while at Dicks today i tried a few different 7 irons. I really liked the M1, altho they didn't have a lot to choose from there.

But then I noticed it had a regular shaft.

My swing speed with the 7 was around 75-77 mph. So the sales guy told me i was on the edge of regular to Senior shafts!

What a shock!

My mizzies have KBS tour stiffs in them. And I haven't been as crisp lately...

Maybe its time i make the move to regulars.

Boo-Hoo...

The old mare ain't what she use to be ;) Shafts are becoming such an interesting animal to me.  I had no clue there are so many possibilities in the shaft market.

I'd rather get fit for a shaft over a head. One size doesn't fit all.

I dropped to a regular flex in my driver a few months back and it seems to have helped with distance and dispersion

I will say stay tuned for the Matrix MFS Shaft review thread as I'm sure there will be plenty of info to help you make a educated decision.  One thing I will add for now is not all shafts are created equal. Even among the same name brand.

If you like the feel of the stiff shaft, then maybe try something much lighter. KBS tour stiff weigh around 125g, maybe find some graphite in 85g or a steel in 95 or something.

Welcome to the "senior" reality! I'm going to be 71 in 2 months and I did the similar, tried new clubs/shafts. I AM now waiting for my new irons and SENIOR shafts. My swing speed was a couple mph less than yours.

yes- the R shaft i was swinging today was a 95.

my other thoughts were leaning to a bit more forgiving head than the MP-64's

Ive heard so many good reports from the Wilson FG6 (i think) that Ill probably just get a new 6-PW set. Ill probably be spending a little time at Roger Dunns in the next few weeks...

Momma is not gunna be happy... heheh

Oh, and I forgot to add_

Is there a point of diminished returns where a R shaft will actually match/ or beat the distance with a S shaft, due to the extra kick of the R shaft?

You shouldn't looking at a senior flex for a while. Usually low 70s to high 60s gets you toward a senior flex, generally speaking.

I think the function of shaft flex is also determined by the type of swing you have regardless of swing speed. Remember reading about Nick Price's swing and John Daly's swing, Nick was using 2 level stiffer than Daly even at a lower swing speed be cause he has much faster change in direction than a smoother swinger Daly.

Personally, I use it as a tool to feel the club head. Tour stiff shafts feel like a pole to me even when the shaft flexes and bends similar to stiff or reg flex visually on a slomo, but it just feels dead in my hand.

I'm now a fan of UST recoil series. I have a couple of models. I tried a few different models out with different shaft weight. I was looking for a lighter shaft so I went with the light weigh option. Recoil series offers 2 different R stiffness, in many models and the ES model sounds like it would be a good fit for you. It stands for Enhanced Stability, stiffer tip feel a bit stiffer than the regular R shaft. You can tipped it to fit either .355 or parallel .370. Looks great as well.

You and I are very close in age Sluggo - I went through this a bit earlier than you.

At around 50 I bought a 3w with an R shaft at the advice of my pro who was doing the same thing. In this case it wasn't for distance it was for trajectory.

In my early 50's I went to graphite in my irons and than R flex in the irons at around 55. I had my lowest sustained GHIN at that point 1.2. I started having heart issues a couple of years later and also had pneumonia. I lost club head speed and have been straight R ever since.

I know someone made a comment about a particular S flex feeling like R. Don't be fooled by that - feel is deceptive. If you are sticking with your MP64's I'd go get a few swings on the shaft optimizer (I'm not a huge fan but it would give you a starting point). The Wilsons are really nice - I have the C200's but you don't seem to need to go for that amount of extra distance.

Let us know how it goes!

I use the recoil in some shafts and KBS 105 in my 6,5,4. I,m 56 still pushing 93-96 swing. I did'nt go with 1/2" longer cuz of swingweight I just added tungston power to my epoxy on the Recoil 65's. But yes, shaft changes at older ages is and will continue to hapen.

Okay so I thought about this thread today as I hit balls. My 5 hybrid flies high 160's and runs out to 175 plus (in normal Florida summer conditions on a green that is fairly firm). My 6 iron flies high 140's and runs out to 155 or so). My 7 iron carries low 140's and runs out to 148. That was very similar to the numbers that I got with the 7 iron in my iron fitting a couple of weeks back (I averaged 144 carry - 150 total). Clearly I have a gapping issue.

I grabbed my old 5 hybrid out of the closet - its 27 degrees. My current one is 25 degrees.

So I have the following options - buy a 6 through 9 iron of some type with stronger lofts (I have a SCOR 44 in the closet that would go in).

Have my current 6 bent two degrees and 7 iron 1 degree stronger.

Try subbing in the old five hybrid for the six iron and seeing if it's a better gap. If so consider option one or two with 7,8 rather than 6,7.

If I go that last way I will probably buy 3 new irons that are a bit more players type.

Right now the only clubs I'm not crushing (for me) are putter (because I don't want to) and 6 iron. Eliminate that gap and lack of consistency and find some more time to play and I could really lower my handicap again.

I'm very excited about where my game is at. I'm not likely to find the time but just knowing that I could do it makes me feel better about golf.

My original though

Kev, is there any chance you can play a 5i or some sort of hybrid-iron? Think a one off SGI. If you can hit it, that might solve your gap issue then play various flights with your 4 hybrid to cover the gap above that since you won't shoot at greens as often with the 4.

Besides that, I'd go for the option of bending the lofts stronger because it's the most cost effective and you're already comfortable with them.
