Sluggo42
So I see that my east coast brothers are probably having a tough time getting a tee time these days, forcing you to an indoor facility? How does that translate to the real grass after a few months of the winter blues? evershady
It's different. I suppose it really depends on the quality of simulator. On the ones I have played they tend to be ok on full shots chipping and putting are just a pain. A few years ago I had a pretty bad over the top pull fade that on simulator is pull draw. But since I have fixed that for the most part they are pretty close to keep you loose and ready come spring. Some guys are way better simulator players than real life turf players. HighFade
On my SkyTrak, I shoot 90-120. IRL more like 75. Short game isn't accurate..... But what I think the ability to swing almost every day and keep my swing grooved more than makes up for any turf issues that might come up. There is no spoon. This, just being able to take full swings and somewhat keep the swing rust free is a benefit. Yeah the short game and putting suck indoors, but you can still work on technique and just making sure the motions are smooth. Put it this way, indoor golf is still way better than no golf. HighFade
Yep! And it's not horrible. Its chipping and pitching are awful. I've hit chips that barely hit the net and the sim says it went 50 yards. That's just my experience with Sytrak tho. Maybe other sims will be different There is no spoon. STUDque
I'm not fortunate enough to have a simulator to play on. I do have some things going my way though. My basement is one big room that we use for a play room and the carpet acts pretty similar to grass on chips/putts. A couple times a week I take the girls down there and all 3 of us get to play! I mostly just use little soft balls so no one comes upstairs with a black eye. The nice thing is that the ceiling is high enough for full swings so I can get a little bit of that done and keep the rust away. The other thing I've got going for me is hot blood. Even through the winter, I can get outside as my schedule allows to practice or even play. I think I've seen a simulator set up at my course in the dining area. before so I'm hoping they do that this year. Not sure if it's for club demos or available for actual practice. That's on my to-do list to check in with them and see if I can gap test my clubs. Reesedw
I agree with everyone else. Better then nothing. Just played last week twice. I do not trust the simulator when it comes to distance. But it's always sunny and 70*, and never a bad lie.. for some reason I always get out of the rough and sand just like it was the fairway. Lol. It's fun and it's golf.. better then nothing. Canucklehead
When I use a simulator it's usually to get loose after not touching a club for 4 months or so. MGoBlue100
Grew up in MI (obviously) and then spent a few years in MN. This necessitates a lot of indoor (simulator or somewhat heated "bubble domes") golf in the winter months. I actually used to enjoy it a lot, mostly for the camaraderie. We used to do a "Daytona 500 Day". You picked a driver, and then we added your net golf simulator score to your driver's finish and played for $5/man. Any reason to drink beer, golf & gamble! mpatrickriley
I have an OptiShot, which would certainly be at the low end of the simulator market, a step up from Wii Golf. Like others have said, it's a fun diversion, and it's a very rough approximation of golf. The OptiShot is absolutely not suited for dialing in numbers, because it doesn't detect ball flight at all. But it does a reasonable job at sensing face-to-path, which is not insignificant. I found that because the OptiShot doesn't care about contact, when I finally got to golf again in the spring of this year, my low point had become erratic. I'm making a conscious effort this winter to focus on impact with it. My boy and I normally play 18 together on the OptiShot each Saturday. Living in the very far north, we're likely five months from golf outdoors here, so being a golf nut here means you've gotta do something. Golfspy_CG2
I really wish we had a golf dome in this area. But I guess we aren't cold enough for long enough time during the winter to justify somone taking on the cost. There really aren't a lot of options for simulators either that I've seen. SuperDave
I don't really have any experience with indoor golf, but last year 2016, they opened Swing365. I have yet to go there. It's 30 to 45 dollars an hour. I'll go, but got to get a few friends to go as well. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
MGoBlue100
I just learned this morning there are a couple of “golf domes†in my area, used for a variety of sports but they have hours devoted to golf. I'll have to check that out! Should be better than a simulator.I think it is. You can at least see “some†ball flight, and hit a few different shots. I know a lot of the MI & MN boys have dome experience. Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy "Where'd it go?" "Right in the Lumberyard..." revkev
My Pro in Wisconsin hated indoor simulators - I could kick his butt on them because I quickly realized that chips and pitches were like video games. I actually became a better chipper by playing on them - I learned how far I could hit each club from 9 iron to Lob wedge knee to knee and waste to waste. Modified Peltz I suppose. I should re adopt that chipping style.
