JohnBarry
Heard nothing but great things about old Mac from a couple of my high school buddies who live close to it and play it every couple of weeks. golfskipackage
Just love Debary Golf and Country Club in Florida.Where in most holes are set away from the community by a buffer zone of dense woods and vegetation
jamo
Shining Rock! About 5 miles from my house. Played there last year with my dad, great course, good to see it made the list. Next to impossible greens, which puts an absolute premium on not just putting, but also ballstriking. You have to put the ball in the right spot on the green on every hole. Huge fun though, very well designed. Don't know why I'm writing in fragments. EDIT: Just realized that this is about 6 months 5 months old. JBones
I would love to go play the Pete Dye at French Lick, but it's too expensive. The stay and play packages aren't that bad, but since I only live an hour away, it doesn't make much sense to pay the extra to stay. Don't dis the French Lick, Tuna, thats where Larry Legend is from. A guy I work with grew up across the street from him and they used to play ball together in his driveway. Follow @GolfspyBones
Matt Saternus
I believe the Pete Dye course is in the $400-500 range. That's absolute insanity, especially in the middle of freaking Indiana. I like the French Lick Resort: the Donald Ross Course is very nice, the casino is good, hotel is fine, but I will not be back until the price for the Dye course comes down by about 75%. GolfSpy Tim
curious... what would most of you guys consider a fair price for one of these courses? Matt, you said it would have to come down to like the $100-200 range maybe? For me, the biggest gripe I have on price is finding someone else to go with me

Matt, you said it would have to come down to like the $100-200 range maybe? For me, the biggest gripe I have on price is finding someone else to go with me $400-$500 is a little on the stupid side. I'd probably cap myself under most circumstances at $350. Fortunately I can play #2 course in NY (according to Golf Week), Saratoga National for around $50 (when I don't get comped). #1 in NY is Beth Page. That's only $85. I'll pay for the Turning Stone courses as well, but 2 of the 3 are just over $100 as well. MyGolfSpy is only major golf site that refuses advertising from large golf companies. jamo
The one near me, Shining Rock, is anywhere from $25 to $60. I consider that pretty reasonable.

Matt, you said it would have to come down to like the $100-200 range maybe? For me, the biggest gripe I have on price is finding someone else to go with me I paid full freight ($375 at the time, I think) to play Spyglass and I'd probably do that again. I'd probably pay the ridiculous $500 to play Pebble once. Those courses are special. The Pete Dye course may be really nice, but it's in the middle of *&$ing Indiana and it's brand new: no history, no nothing. I'd probably pay $100 if it was a really great course, but beyond that it needs to have something special, IMO. As T alluded to, there are too many good courses that can be played for $50 to go around dropping triple digits on courses that aren't truly among the elite. Just my opinion, and I'm cheap, so take it for what it's worth. Follow me on Twitter: @MattSaternus
JBones
The Pete Dye course may be really nice, but it's in the middle of *&$ing Indiana and it's brand new: no history, no nothing. This. Plus if you are going to play in southern Indiana, Fuzzys course (Covered Bridge) is the place to go; it's only $75 on the weekends. Or if you want to drive a little further and know someone, you can get on Vahalla for around $150. I was supposed to be the fourth in a group with Rick Pitino and a couple of my friends (one of which is related to Pitino) there last year, but he ended up taking one of his in-laws. Also another "if you know someone" course to play in southern Indiana is Victoria National. I live about 1 mile from there and my neighbor is a member who keeps promising to take me, but our schedules never seem to match up. Xamilo
I would pay in the worst situation the equivalent to four hours of work. I mean, if I am going to stay four hours on the course, that would be changing one hour of work for one hour of fun, but will never pay $500 to play a curse in my life. There are less than a handful of courses I'd consider going above 4 bills to play. Pebble and St. Andrews are probably tops on that list. Though the history isn't there (yet), I'd pay well to play Whistling Straits too. I'd love to spend a week at Bandon as well, but thankfully (and probably in part due to location) those course are reasonably priced.
