Took a putting lesson this week and for the first time in 20 years I found someone that made sense. I learned to putt pretty unconventional and was based all on feel. The pro told me to do what feels natural and when I did that he said don’t change anything. Last two days I was under 30 putts and shot 75 yesterday on a course that is over 7,400 yards with a slope and rating of 76.8/154. Have to say putting was a strength for a change.

Where did you get the lesson?

Oh yeah, that's been around for a long time.  But the pro shop register... not until this year.

How long have you been personally scanning your CC at the proshop?   My guess is that it is something that just comes from the service that the course uses and all their CC scanners do the same prompt and isn't based on where the scanner is located.  could have been there for years and the proshop employee just said $0 when scanning your card.

If one only intends to "tweak" their own clubs and does not care about loft and lie measurements sure but, for my purposes, whatever LL unit I eventually get will be checked/compared to a calibrated standard. Not knowing what a clubs true loft and lie is seems pretty pointless.

This is the key to the entire discussion.   If you are just doing your own clubs, then it probably doesn't matter the actual number since you will just adjust as needed.   If you are in a business setting and someone asks for or checks for a specific loft lie value you need to make sure your device is calibrated.

I was wondering if any of you club makers out there have any of the old specs for trimming the KBS MAX 85 and 90 regular flex shafts.  I contacted KBS and they couldn't give me the exact data.  Must have been a newbie behind the phone.  My situation is that I bought a set of MAX 90 regular and put them into an old backup set of Callaway Apex heads and they seemed stiffer than they should.  KBS told me the length from the tip of a raw shaft to the first step was 12".  They also told me that they "thought" the trimming instructions for the 9 iron was 3" off the tip.  But when I measured my 9 iron that was installed into the Callaway Apex it was 6 1/2 ", instead of the 9" required.  Now I am wondering if I got ripped off on this used set of shafts.

    Thanks for any replies.

    Ground Hog

Based on what I found the Max 90  was made exclusively for Callaway so Callaway might be the best place to call to find out about that particular shaft.     The 85 may be made for TM based on what I am seeing.

Based on the Max (80gr) instructions you tip 4" on the 9 iron for regular, 5" for Stiff, and 6" for X.

Thanks, I've been playing golf for a while, when I was younger I use to do the handicapping 😉

The question remains is there any rule for my situation or is it tough luck?

Read the rules of handicapping.  Rule 5 is the applicable area.

Please forgive my rudimentary drawing. The ball was hit over the green into some bushes.  There is a forest behind (no back-of-line relief).  There is no lateral relief because any point not closer to the hole is either in the bushes or (eventually) in the forest.

Is the only option here stroke-and-distance relief?

Going to assume that the ball is not in a penalty area so you option is to take an unplayable.

Another question, how do we know that he didn’t leave the soap residue on there to gain a competitive advantage? 🙃😁 I mean we can’t decipher if he thought the white out would, how can we be so sure the soap residue wasn’t purposeful? All hypothetical questions of course.

age old question - best way to record your video? Getting the phone camera in the right spot….?

I always used a regular camera (video mode);  a phone works just as well.

Here is a video that tells you where to place the camera for DTL and FO views.  Basically the camera is at hand height and pointed directly at your hands for both views.  I have used a string that I run from the camera toward where I am setup to make sure everything is setup correctly.   Or you could use a second person to record your swing.

So its a case off tough luck, and nothing to do with the 18 year break or my scores or my avg coming back into the game?

I'm using my handicap on avg in 9 holes

No time for practice or lessons...I'm more self taught, I'm just a casual golfer now, not competitive those days are way behind me 🙂

I thought there might of been some sort of : break away from golf rule and or so far his avg suggests a look into his hcp, anyways but cheers for you input 🙂

Handicaps are computed based on your scores;  as you play more golf it gets adjusted and after you play enough rounds it will go up.

My question is, had Hideki cleaned it off with a “foreign substance” and didn’t wipe off the residue… was he breaking the rules? Like dish soap residue.

Adding to what I posted,  since the intent was to "clean" it is permissible per the equipment rules

    • By applying any substance to the clubhead (other than in cleaning it) to affect how it performs in making a stroke.

The most important question to ask when ruling on a club which has had something temporarily applied to the face by a player is “why has it been put there?” If a material or substance has been applied to the face in order to protect it or clean it, then it would probably be permitted provided all other Rules are satisfied

Probably not as it probably wouldn't break the impact areas roughness rule for equipment;  which sharpie doesn't break either;  but thick whiteout does.

    For reference https://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/Equipment/Equipment Rules Final.pdf

Impact Area Roughness When dealing with the surface roughness of a club face (not including putters, see Section 5f), the claims made by the manufacturer must be taken into account – especially if there is a claim that the roughness of the face influences the movement of the ball. In the absence of such claims, the ruling is made purely on the amount of roughness there is. Sandblasting or other treatments of roughness greater than 180 micro inches (4.5 µmetre) are not permitted. In addition to this requirement for roughness, milling is not permitted if the crest to trough depth exceeds 0.001 inches (0.025 mm). A reasonable tolerance is allowed for both of the above measurements. Non-conforming sandblasting or milling usually feels rough to the touch.

short of having GCQuad data available, and seeing the shots and ball witness marks on the clubface, how else besides the lie board or sharpie test can one assess lie angle?  It seems that pre-LM club building/tuning methods are being viewed as ineffective.

Not sure there are really any other ways other than maybe the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer which is supposed to provide a lie angle.  I've seen people comment that GCQuads aren't accurate since the dots get hidden by the ball at impact.  The sharpie test seems to be considered the ideal way other than watching ball flight and simultaneously making corrections with a L/L machine.

Not sure if you have seen this,  but it may give an overview on why the lie board may not be the best way to fit;  seems like just adjusting lie to make the impact centered may result in bad ball flights due to how it influences face angle.   I think in the video,  Ian was hitting a 50 yard hook based on centering impact using the lie board.

I'll join you.  I want to see test data that shows Sharpie marks do not alter ball flight and white-out marks do.  Also, what about other mfg.'s of marking ink and white-out?  Foreign substance is foreign substance. I mean if they want to split atoms, fire up that accelerator and let's do some splitting.

In the video that Middler posted (which gives a good summary of what they looked at) it was largely about how much it was above the surface of the club.   Sharpie or similar markers would not be felt if you ran your finger over the clubface.

Absolutely could.  At check in.  Being your bag, a quick glance at each club.  Have a nice day.

Check in where And which specific rules are you evaluating?  Or are you advocating for a check in prior to their heading to the first tee before each round?

Direct from the rules official https://youtu.be/e7HjHwJWuao

Doesn’t say who called it in.  He refused to answer that question.  It was nit the photographer as I am 99% confident he is gone prior to the start of the tournament; which is based on my talking to him in the past.

Hard to know for sure, but why was the pic taken? I hope it wasn’t a gotcha, where the picture taker could have just mentioned the rule about it at the time the picture was taken. Again, I’m just exploring one possibility, I don’t know.

WRX have taken WITB pictures for many years;  They do this every tournament for multiple players bags.  He asks the caddie if he can take pictures, pulls the clubs from the bag, and then photographs them.  I doubt he is even thinking about the rules of golf when taking the photos as he is trying to get as many photos as possible.   Again, as stated in the video of posted above,  having it in the bag isn’t illegal nor is using it during practice rounds.  The video even stated Hideki’s club guy thought it was legal and only illegal on driver.

  16. 42 minutes ago, Shankster said:

I’m sorry, but this Hideki Thing is ridiculous. Like they little bit of paint will “help” him.  If anything, since it was raised. You’d think it would make the ball flight worse…

Let me ask you a question.  What is the line between where something is legal and illegal and who interprets if “the applied substance” helps or hinders performance?   Let’s look at the launch monitor dots; they are far enough from the center of the face that no pro will hit them but they are illegal. Should I allow them to be in certain positions and rely on measurement to determine legality?   How about chapstick or similar substance on part of the face but not the center?

also we are only talking about the 3 wood but the driver had the same white out substance But not near the center of the face; was that legal?  If so, is the location of the substance important?

    Social media strikes again!

"Our committee became aware through some pictures that were posted that there may be a substance that has been painted on the face of one of Hideki's clubs," Rintoul explained. "And we approached Hideki and went through the process. Hideki, are you carrying this club? Yes. Have you used this club? Because if he hasn't used the club, it's okay to carry a nonconforming club, you just can't use it. Have you used this club? Well, the poor guy has played one hole, and he managed to use it off the first tee.

Yes,  it doesn’t answer my question about who, alerted the committee.  The article I linked indicated they would not say who contacted them.  I interpreted the post I quoted as it was the photographer that notified the tour and knew it was illegal prior to the start of the event.  Pretty sure it wasn’t him as the WRX photographer generally leaves prior to the start of the event.

  17. 7 minutes ago, Middler said:

Too bad the person who took the picture, presumably knowing it wasn't legal, didn't just alert Hidecki's people a couple days ago when it was first seen. He/she waited until Hidecki teed of Thursday...

Where did you hear who or when the tour was alerted?  I doubt it was the WRX individual that took the photos as he is simply taking pictures of equipment in the bags and at the practice facilities.   Also, during the days prior to the start of the event, players have things like the launch monitor dots on their clubs which are also illegal, clubs that will not make the bag once the event starts, and sometimes more than 14 clubs. The expectation should be that the players and there team know the rules and would alleviate any issues prior to the start of the round.  Even having the best intentions I doubt anyone; with any tour level authority, would go to his team and say the club was illegal prior to the start of play.

I am trying to switch from a Sr to R shaft for my Ping G400 3 fairway. There's not many listings for used Alta ones. Any other suggestions on a used shaft? If it is not the stock shaft, will it fit my existing adapter. I am new to swapping shafts.

There are a multitude of shaft options available in the used market.  You have a couple of options.
    1. buy a used shaft with a g400 adapter already installed.  This is the easiest option as it is just screw in and play.   Just pay attention to the shaft length to be sure you get the desired overall club length as the shaft length does not equal club length.  I don’t know the length you need to make it stock length; measure you Sr flex shaft to know.

    2. If you have an existing adapter or want to buy an adapter you can install that adapter on any shaft (new or used).  If you have the right tools and ability you could remove whatever adapter is on a used shaft and install the Ping adapter.  You could also take it to a club builder and get it swapped for probably about $20 or less.  If it is a new shaft, it is just appropriately prep the shaft, install the adapter, and cut to length.

the specific shaft you should get is up to you as you swing is what influences how well the shaft would work.  You can get shafts from cheap to expensive.  I’ve used Mikes Golf Outlet in the past for used shafts; you can select fairway woods shafts, flex, and tip to see what used shafts are available.   You could even pay them to change out the tip if you find a particular shaft brand/model you want.

If you click on the buy it now feature, the club they are recommending with come up with the loft. You can just back out and not purchase it.

I tried it and this doesn’t seem to work as you indicated.   One of my recommendations went to the default Callaway order screen and the other went to global golf with a configuration that did not match what was recommended.

    Wedges: Various models of Vokeys from SM6 to SM8 46, 56, 52, 60

Interesting setup; not many people switch to specialized wedges starting with pitching wedge.  What was you reasoning/what did you gain?

100 MPH swing (148 ball speed) is never going to carry 250 even with perfect launch conditions (check it on flightscope trajectory optimizer).  With a realistic, good launch angle of about 15 deg, you could get 240.  235 I think would be a realistic goal at 100 MPH for a well struck shot at sea level without wind.

If you look at trackman number, carry for 100MPH swing is about 247 with optimal conditions (which is around 250).   I played with the flightscope tool and was able to manipulate numbers to get 250 carry with 148 ball speed at sea level.
