Anyone remember when the annual lottery rejection for the 2023 Masters begins/ends? I don't want to miss my opportunity for my 33rd straight "we're sorry to inform you" notice...

Usually it is a few weeks after the tournament concludes.   I’d expect first week of May.

  2. I think the potential is there for the use of launch monitors/simulators to mess up you game just as there is potential to improve your game.   I also don’t think simulator golf is any different than using mats on a range.   The key component being the mat.   Mats can be more forgiving and give us the impression that we are hitting the ball well when we in fact aren’t.   By paying close attention to strike you can get the necessary feedback.

as a most wanted tester I spend lots of time using a GCQuad and hitting off a mat and the results are comparable to what I see on the course.  I even brought my own tees for driver testing to ensure I was teeing the ball at the correct height as I like it a little lower than I was able to get with the tees at MGS HQ.

I have a utility 4 iron that is 23* that I will usually pull if hitting 215-230. I have found that sometimes it will balloon in the air (too spinny?) and I will not hit it past 200. Should I get my current utility bent a bit stronger or just look to purchase a 2-3 utility iron?

Based on what you say above, my opinion is neither.  My reasoning is that you have a club that you currently hit in the desired 215-230 range and sometimes you make a bad swing and it only goes 200.    If you bend it stronger or get a less lofted utility then your miss hit will potentially go farther as will your good strikes so you have created a gap that you previously had covered.   I'd suggest looking into why you hit the club poorly and see if you can fix that problem.    How often do you hit it well and how often do you get the balloon shot?

For those of you who use different weighted putters (or change weights in your putters), how do you find it works best? Heavier for faster greens and lighter on slower ones or vice-versa?

With my new putter I can change the weight from 350 to 370g by replacing the weights so just trying to figure out which way around I should be using them. I know a bit of trial and error is needed but just trying to gauge some thoughts on it.

I have seen recommendations for both heavier and lighter on faster greens and the same for slower greens. The reasoning for heavier on faster is that it slows down the putter resulting in slower ball speeds.  The reasoning for heavier on slower is that more mass will increase ball speeds.   Switch the arguments around and you get the heavier on slow and lighter on fast.   Theory is that if you can find the right weight for the various green speed you can just make the same stroke and build one set of feels for distances.

I keep heads the same weight even if I can change since it reduces variables.  Head weight will influence rotation so you could struggle to square the putter resulting in more of a pull or push.  Weight could just change your feels and the theory not work out.  Basically you just need to try it it and see if it works for you.

    Just an innocuous question …

I hit a tee shot off that went about 200 or 220 yards that land in a line of trees off to the right. When I play with my brother, I help him spot his ball as well, then drive him to his ball in the cart before going back to get ready for my shot. This time I went back to my ball only to find that it was not my ball at all. Huh. No problem, I looked around but couldn’t find another one. That’s fine, I must have gone too far ahead, so I drove further back, then further forward and still I couldn’t find my ball. Then I noticed folks on an adjacent fairway playing up toward their green, and so I think maybe someone accidentally played my ball while I was helping my brother find his.

So I’m just that guy who wonders about these things: Would you take a penalty drop or would you just play on from where you think the ball landed?

If you are following the rules of golf Rule 18.2b applies:

What to Do When Ball Is Lost or Out of Bounds

If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6).

Exception – Player May Substitute Another Ball under Other Rule When It Is Known or Virtually Certain What Happened to Ball: Instead of taking stroke-and-distance relief, the player may substitute another ball as allowed under a Rule that applies when his or her ball has not been found and it is known or virtually certain that the ball:

    • Came to rest on the course and was moved by an outside influence (see Rule 9.6) or played as a wrong ball by another player (see Rule 6.3c(2)),
    • Came to rest on the course in or on a movable obstruction (see Rule 15.2b) or an abnormal course condition (see Rule 16.1e),
    • Is in a penalty area (see Rule 17.1c), or
    • Was deliberately deflected or stopped by any person (see Rule 11.2c).

since you think that the group took your ball but not known or virtually certain that it was moved by this outside influence you cannot proceed to rule 9.6 and must play it as a lost ball.

  6. IMO, there are so many variables in the golf swing that you cannot look at just one and use it to decide if something is right for you.  When people swing a club they may do exactly what general expectations are and some may do the exact opposite.  Anyone that reads this forum knows that the general answer to anyone looking for a club or shaft recommendation is to try them yourself and not follow manufacturer claims.

When it comes to shaft weight I would personally consider how that shaft worked at the end of a round of golf versus the beginning to see if I  getting the same results or have they deteriorated.  I would look at dispersion patterns to see how my body reacts to the shaft.  This is why robots are not good options for evaluating clubs and what is seen during the MGS most wanted testing.

As for the OP statement, I agree that the shaft weight does not necessarily influence the speed at which the golf swings.   Mark Crossfield recently did a video where he compared a 55r and 75x and the ball and club numbers were basically identical.  Dispersion patterns were different.

I wonder if the size of the grip would change the how a person would close or open the face on the club .. would bigger grips make the person try to close the club face quicker or smaller grips close the club face to fast and make the person hook .. just my thoughts not even sure if it would make a difference for a person

Here’s a video that discusses this very topic.

One word, Quintic. Until MGS uses this system to really evaluate putters, it's a guessing game at best.

Find yourself a Quintic system and go roll every putter you can find.

Quintic isn't readily available to most people.    While the MGS most wanted putter test will try to fit the tester to a putter if multiple options are provided the intent of the test is to find the putter that will work best for the largest percentage of players that pick their putters OTR and don't get fit.  All of their results recommend that the player gets fit for whatever club they put in the bag.

People swear by these putters.  I do wonder if the price influences the overwhelming positivity.  Like, “I spent $750, so yeah it’s a great putter!”  I don’t expect that from our fellow Spies doing their own reviews.

I would love to see someone compare between the L.A.B., Edel, and the Justin Rose putters.

I’ve rolled the Edel and the Justin Rose before.  I liked the Edel.  It felt impossible to make a bad stroke.  With the Rose, it wasn’t the same.  Just didn’t feel as perfectly balanced.  I’ve never rolled a L.A.B.

I’m glad it’s working well for you all!

IMO, the LAB putters have to be fit to you to work well.  Is the Justin Rose putter the Axis?  I have putted with them on a practice green but could never get used to them.   I was fit for an Edel and I would say it is completely different than the LAB as their design concepts are completely different.

The LAB putters are definitely interesting and right now I am falling a little out of favor as I am really struggling with distance control.

I guess the Golf Channel isn’t really the GC anymore….

They have gone a bit downhill but the Masters has never been live on GC.   GC gets coverage of the PGA events as does ESPN+.  Not a fan of ESPN+ coverage but enjoy the fact that I get to watch extra golf coverage.

Watched just a few minutes of play amongst the hours of 'talking heads' on GC. Definitely a big thumbs down for their coverage. Will be watching on the major network instead on Sat and Sun.

GC doesn't have any live coverage.  Masters.com, ESPN+ for early coverage and then CBS for afternoon coverage.

I would love to hear this question if a pro on tour. How do you feel about a guy who takes FOREVER lining up a putt.  Looking from all directions. Standing over their putts for a long time.  Then missing by 2 or 3 feet left, right or long or short.  Not inches.  FEET.  I'm just a schmo playing 3 - 4 times a week with buddies but I can't stand this.  How does a pro feel?

Probably like any other question.  Some will say players are too slow and some will say they are just fine.    You never specify putt distances but missing by feet isn't always a bad thing;  putts have dispersion patterns just like other clubs and from 20 feet and out you pattern will start to be measured in feet and not inches.

That's the thing - the plate looks legit and a similar plate was used on the pre-odyssey logoed models. I just didn't find any references to this full setup (this plate plus H8 neck). It's also possible this was the Japan release or it was slightly customized or something. I'm hoping they just come back with "yes that retailer is legit, don't worry about it" (can't confirm on Callaway's website directly -Japan is not a search option, even though they have known business in Japan).

could be Japanese release or could be from the Toulon Garage.

Picked up an older Toulon Design Madison head off of eBay (wanted it specifically for the Capitol logo), then immediately regretted not doing earlier research -- it passes the initial sniff test (looks too good to be a knockoff...) and comes from a Japanese company that claims authenticity guaranteed, but one thing looks potentially inconsistent, so I have a request out with Odyssey to try to verify (specifically, this has an H8 neck rather than the typical H1, and the US stock releases I found with this head/neck combo say "Odyssey" on the bottom plate, not "Toulon"). If it's confirmed authentic, I'll be seeking out one of those fancy new putter shafts to put into it.  PXL_20220406_212832293.jpg.63b25d19d381a08b5862b88cff0fad94.jpg

Could be a pre odyssey or early odyssey release??  Any Odyssey logo's on the putter?

Anyone have any sites where you can buy Masters polos? I always want to get one of the weekend polos the guys wear and can never find them! Willy Z's Sunday shirt specifically is what I want to buy but cant find anything!

Sounds like you are talking about the players daily wear and not masters logo’s merchandise?   If it is the players attire then you would probably have to identify the manufacturer of the shirt and acquire it from their site.  Looks like he is a foot joy player (https://www.golfmonthly.com/best-golf-deals/what-is-will-zalatoris-wearing-228307) so start on the foot joy site

I was just starting to break into the 80s on a regular basis which felt good.  I wanted to take some lessons to fix a few things and perhaps elevate the game even further.  Long story short the lessons broke me completely.  I was at a point a few months ago that I almost considered giving up the game.  It was that bad.  Any tips on  regaining the swing and some confidence?

Why did the lesson break you completely?  Swing changes are hard and need to be practiced.  Any change will feel different and uncomfortable because it is not what you typically do.  Unfortunately you provide no input on what you need help with so the basic answer is take lessons and practice.

This isn't even close to accurate. Not even in the same universe as reality. Tom Watson won the Byron Nelson in 1980 with a score of 274. Lee Kyoung-hoon won it in 2021 with a score of 263. In 1980 it was played at Preston Trails Golf Club, with the course under 7,100 yards. In 2021 it was played at TPC Craig Ranch at over 7400 yards.

Just a point of clarity and not continuing the discussion.  He wasn't referring to the tournament but the award:  The PGA Tour presents its own Byron Nelson Award annually to the player with the lowest adjusted scoring average for the year.
