  1. Anyone else try and replicate tour pros swings? I've been watching a lot of Thomas Pieters lately, going to try and closely mimic it. As I'm 6'6”, he's the only one that comes close at 6'5” I believe.

Many people try and many instructors try to teach that way. The V1 swing software was the first that I remember that came with PGA player videos to allow such a comparison. I personally prefer the Arnold Palmer approach if swing your own swing. We don't necessarily have the same body makeup (arm length, flexibility, weight, etc) to be able to mimic a swing. But lots of players became good players by emulating swings, so in does work for some.

  2. As I have mentioned once or twice or maybe a lot more I have been struggling with my short game.  After testing drivers yesterday I worked on hitting chips and pitches with various lofted wedges and seemed to be pretty successful.  I was making solid contact and was able to dial in some distance control using body positions (club parallel to ground,  arms parallel with half follow through,  arms parallel with full follow through,  chest, and full swing.)   Was really happy with the ball striking;  need to get to a course so I can try the swings out and see how well I can do.  Feeling a bit optimistic.

  3. I understand your point. Our common factor is that we ultimately have the need to trust someone or something. But when those computers go down, the world stops. What the heck do we do now. At least in my day, things continued we could respond immediately.

I agree about the world stopping when the computer goes down. There is generally no mechanism in place to do anything when the computer system is down. I guess it is a sign that we should enjoy the few moments where technology does not drive what we do.

  4. Ok now I have the heads for my new irons, and I need to purchase new shafts. No problem. Except I cannot find the specs anywhere and I'm tired of looking, are the MP18 SC heads .355 taper tip. (I assume that) or are they .370 parallel tip. I have searched and cannot find it. I'm tired of looking. Can someone help. I assume they are .355 taper, but before I spend he money on new shafts I want to make sure.

Mizuno customer service won't tell you?

  5. .When we did it ourselves, I knew how it was done or computed, I just don't have the same trust in computers. How do I know if the programmer actually knew what they were doing.

You may have known how to do something but how did I know the next person did? With the manual process I have to rely on how the person was trained. With a computerized process I rely on what was identified and verified by an expert user to ensure the process is followed each time.

Ultimately, just like you knew what you were doing the programmer knows what they are doing. I have more faith in the programmer than the expert communicating all the information to the programmer.

  6. I'm sure this is well known but when you get fit for lie angle its for at impact. Not address. Any decent club fitter could careless if the club head it toe down or up at address as long as it is getting soled properly at impact

Agree,  but a ciubs stock lie angle is not based on handicap level. The discussion started with a statement that players type hybrids have a more upright lie angle and a non players is flatter and that most people don't adjust the lie angle of a hybrid.  Given that scenario,  based on that if the lie angle is too upright,  they would most likely result in pull/pull hooks.

  7. Not sure how you can correlate lie angle to player ability. Clubs are fit to the player. If a club is too upright when the player takes his stance the toe will come off the ground and close the face making pulls more likely. Too flat and the heel comes up and the face points right. There is no standard for lie angles from club model to club model much less from manufacturer to manufacturer.

See this demonstration, when a player lowers and raises the handle to setup to the ball. The lie angle doesn't change, just how the club is positioned

Speaking in generalities I would say the draw bias if hybrids is more related to the head design to counter the fade most players have with longer irons. From what I remember when looking at hybrids a while ago most had a closed face angle. As hybrids have become more popular you are seeing more models with a square face.

  8. I thought you had to approve the cancellation? You could always look up the details in the ebay FAQ. I think the buyer has to honor his offer. May result in the buyer claiming that the item didn't match the description etc. I have always found that some of the golf forums are better than ebay. Only have to pay the PayPal fee istead if both PayPal and ebay fees.

  9. I would agree that ferrules often become loose as seen in the iron in the middle and right. The middle ferrule is obviously smaller than the other two. Doesn't mean a reshaft was done , but the shaft had to be pulled to replace the ferrule. Technically the club may not have been reshafted. Could be that the ferrule broke and had to be replaced. The better question to ask would be why was the ferrule replaced and was it done at home or professionally.

  10. If you've had a fitting and know your specs and you are participating in the most wanted testing for putters, are the putters adjusted to your personal specs? Or do you use them as they come off the rack?

Also - does everyone test all of the putters or are there a group of people who use mallets and thus test only the mallets..blade guys test blades...etc.?

Putters are not adjusted to my specs. They are as provided by the manufacturers. MGS requests 34” length. The testing is broken into blades and mallets. Based on time the testers can do blades, mallets, or both; it is up to us. The order of putters is randomized across testers as is the order of the distance for each putter. You also don't cross between blades and mallets. You have to finish one category before you start the next.

I test both and there were I think 5 blade putter groups with 5 putters each. I start mallets today and I don't know how many groups; based on the line of putters I should be about 5 as well. Each session/group takes about an hour.

  11. been doing a lot of reading/watching/listening on breaking 80 and the majority of time accuracy and putting are the keys. If you can keep it in the short stuff/on the green and putt well then you have a really good chance at going low....hitting driver a mile isn't a requirement...no matter how fun it is. :D

Sounds like the two of us are trying to do the same thing. I was in the try to break 70 group but my short game fell apart and my game is going downhill. Been doing a lot of research on how to get back into the 70s consistently and the strokes gained/strategy approaches are hit it far as you can and hit greens. There is no distance label on far but it needs to be in a position that doesn't require a recovery shot. Kind of goes against the hit the ball to known distances strategy.

Been looking into the stroke gained methodology and the approach the the decade program advocates. For the decade approach there is an interesting video on Youtube that discusses an approach to hitting drives.

  12. Well I guess if you believe all of that fancy shmancy stuff helps then I see your point.... I like the fact that the older Rife putters get the ball rolling forward without skidding.

Having had some discussions as part of the most wanted testing, there are more variables than just the grooves. Case In point evnroll provides multiple putters with different lofts for the testing to produce the best roll for someone that forward presses vs some that has a vertical shaft. Proper loft on the putter is a bigger key to getting the best roll. If you hit down you may need more lift than someone that hits up.

Explaining/fitting putters during Most wanted testing is part of what is requested by the manufacturers. We were told how we were supposed to putt with the seemore putters and the bloodline putters. Other manufacturers let the testers figure it out in their own; I struggled with the arm lock putter last year because it just didn't make sense to me or how I putter.

  13. Yep... multiple ways to get to a plus handicap. I noticed that he had XStiff shafts in his clubs so I figured he probably had a pretty high swing speed and carried the ball pretty far.... obviously I was wrong....didn't mean to insult anyone.

Not insulted, just don't believe that there is a direct correlation between distance and handicap. We all have opinions and having discussions is great. I tried to caveat my response to try and not come off as insulted or anything; guess I failed. With an 270 carry, he has to have a swing in the neighborhood of 115/120 which I will say is pretty fast. If distance drove handicap long drive contestants would be the best players.

How many 15 handicaps do you know carry it 270? Hitting it far doesn't necessarily lower your handicap, rather, longer carry distance is a byproduct of having a low index.

Please explain. How does carry distance equate to being a low handicap? As a volunteer at an LPGA event that does walking scoring, I see many players with total distance drives in the 220/230 range that have low handicaps because they don't make mistakes.

While I don't know any 15 handicappers that carry the ball 270, how does that equate to the population of golfers and their habdicaps? I just have a small pool of golfers that I know.

  14. That's some sweet shop credit right there...

I hear ya on the F8+ but if you're a +1 hc then isn't 270 carry about average?

Not being a smart a$$, but Why do you think that distance drives handicap? Play from the tees that correlate to how far you hit the ball, Hit the ball down the middle, avoid penalties, and make a few birdie putts. That is how you get a + handicap.

  15. Been looking for some ideas on how to improve my game and have been looking for a book/approach on strategy for playing and practicing. I have been researching every shot counts, lowest score wins, and the decade program. Found some good videos in the decade approach and it all makes sense, I understand the concepts behind strokes gained so I am not looking for an explanation on that aspect. I think I am really looking for a evaluation program so I can measure improvement whether it is practice or an actual round. It seem like lowest score wins might be the best option based on limited availability of information; there is no preview of the book or table of contents listing available for me to see what is included.

I am generally pretty cheap so $30 for a book seems pretty expensive especially if it isn't going to provide what I am looking for. I tried used. Is amazon and I hav to say I find it shocking that a used copy it $10+ more than buying a new copy.

I saw the earlier post that recommended it for a newer golfer so I am wondering if anyone else has read the book and found value in the provided information. Or if anyone else has recommendations on a practice plan. I am comfortable off tee so I am pretty sure I want to focus on iron play to hit more greens and short game to get closer to the pin. both if these areas seem to be the recommended areas to improve scores.

I am not looking for a mental approach to the game so no Rotella or Vision54 type recommendations. Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?
