Those look great!! I hope the finish holds up well.
Me too! I have heard good reviews but time will tell. Nick's prices are hard to beat though so if they make it a year looking good it was worth it.
$270 to have those done, shafts spine aligned and reinstalled. I thought that was very reasonable.
Others charge up to $50 a head with no clean up of the heads before hand. Nick touched these up before they were refinished and to me they look like new. A couple of the heads had quite a bit of bag chatter that wasn't evident in the pictures.

Got great news from Nick today, the irons were finished ahead of schedule and should ship back out to me tomorrow, which is a good two weeks sooner than anticipated.
For a reminder, this is what my heads looked like before:
And here is the picture of my iron heads that Nick sent me today:
I will post more pictures when the assembled irons arrive and wear pics as they start to get used.

Okay my custom shaft is in and I'm playing tomorrow. Interestingly my fitter wants me at 45 1/4â€. He's fit me at 45†in the past but said we tested at 451/4†and I hammered the sweet spot - 1.49 smash factor - so that's where this one is at down .6 degrees, 80 grams.
Totally counter intuitive but I had the same type of fit with the R11s at the Tour Performance CTR.
I will check back in after some time with it.

Awesome Rev can't wait to hear the first reports back. Remember it may take a couple rounds to get comfortable with it so give it time.

From what I have seen the only Black finish that seems to hold up on irons and wedges is the DMB on Cobra and Maltby clubs. Unfortunately I don't believe it is something that can had as an aftermarket customization
I believe you are right on this, or at least I couldn't find anyone that offered it. Reviews I have read about it say that it is a great wearing finish.
-
One of the main reasons I started this thread was to catalog how well (or not) that the finish wears. Lots of threads on other sites about finishes but not many pictures. They get forgotten after one or two rounds or maybe one long range session, but I want to catalog how well these wear. I practice and play a lot so these will get a work out one way or the other.
The only long term pictures I found of DLC were Horschels PXG irons and they looked really beat up and uneven. But if they Nitride doesn't work on these I may go that route with another set. Or just buy a set of DBM Maltbys lol. I know I want black irons and I haven't been able to find the info I wanted so i am going to try and create it, whether that result is good or bad.
Hopefully if others have their irons done they will do the same so we can actually compare the finishes once they have been used hard.

I'd have went with DLC personally. It'll last a lot longer. Tiger Nick's stuff does come back looking nice though
I have seen varying accounts of how well DLC holds up. Saw a WITB for Horschel when he still had the black PXG irons and they looked really rough. I know each coating has it's + and - though. Hope I chose the right one.
Main decision point for me though was that Tiger Nick does spine aligning and club assembly for same or less price as others would do just the heads. I'll keep everyone informed on how the black nitride holds up.

There is no “perfect†club except the perfect club of course.
When you look at the most wanted testing I believe the top drivers will be a best choice for around 60 percent of the people in that category - a best choice! That means there are other best choices.
Of course even within a swing speed/type category there will there are different swings. I have yet to find a Cobra or Callaway driver that has worked close to best for me. It stands to reason that someone who games those drivers won't find what works best for me to be best for them.
Further we weren't fit beyond what Ping offers at no upcharge so it's hard to say what might happen with some fine tuning. Since my LM session was a fitting I've ordered an aftermarket shaft and now know which setting to set the driver on with that shaft once it's installed.
Even with all that I haven't seen any remarkable distance gains. Unreal in regards to accuracy and consistency but I'm in awe of the distance gains some others have found - why can't that happen for me?
Someday I suppose.

Mine absolutely transformed from pretty good to holy cow this is awesome with a shaft only fitting. Finding the right shaft for your swing is a great experience. That said Ping has a very good catalog of shafts.

So as discussed in other threads on here I have decided to send my trusty Srixon Z765's off to Tiger Nick Golf in Ohio to get a Black Nitride coating put on them. I love black weges with a white bottom score line on them and have had better luck aiming that color combination so I figured I would give it a try with my current iron set. I have been playing these irons with UST Recoil 95 shafts in them but decided to go with Steelfiber i110cw's for the irons that Nick will be sending. I had tested that shaft in a 6 iron and wedge and liked the consistency I got with it slightly better than the Recoils.
The Z765's look like this new:
And this is what I am hoping to get them to look like:
I pulled the heads and send shafts and grips to Nick last week. The 9 iron and PW were new heads as I had used them a ton and wanted some newer grooves to be sent off. As part of his service he will strip the old chrome from my heads, refinish in matte Black Nitride, spine align the shafts and assemble the clubs to a pre-agreed swingweight. I prefer a heavy D5 iron swingweight and he was up front that he might not be able to achieve that swing weight with the Steelfiber shafts. Hopefully I won't have to put lead tape back on these like I had before but if so at least he was very up front about it. Here are the heads as they were sent off:
And this is what the Black Nitride should look like:
I was told to expect a 4-5 week turnaround but I heard from Nick the middle of this week and it looks like I might get lucky and get them back in 2-3. I'll post pics of the finsihed products here. Communication has been great so far so I have my fingers crossed that these turn out great.

Didn't want to take my phone up with me to the green, but this picture is from 184 and the best 5i I hit all day. Foot away from my first ace. This course was in such garbage shape. Not worth the $67

Nice! Looks a little breezy.

Mine was able to get 36 holes in no problem on a full charge, but I don't think it would have made it 54.

My comment on ShotScope V2 is that it is very accurate but where you play will limit how useful some of the data is. Here in South Texas we have so much wind that it made the distance calculation somewhat useless. For instance last week I played back to back holes, one into the wind one with it. I hit a full 9 iron pin high from 125 one hole and a full nine iron pin high from 175 on the next hole. Both were good strikes. All of my rounds down here are like that so i just didn't find it that beneficial for me. The short game information on the other hand was very informative.

nice bags but why do they have to have those big giant letters on the side.... that's a huge turnoff for me.
Yeah that branding is a huge turn off for me as well. They should take a page out of the Ping playbook. Look nice though so hopefully they will participate in most wanted testing.

I would be very wary of anything from this company. It all seems very late night infomercialish.

I'd like one for the range, just so I can verify the distances. Still don't plan on using one on the course though.

Why not?

As a pastor, good theology is really important to me.
But the golf course is a bit of an exception. While my confession says that I believe in one true God, I also kinda believe in the golf gods. (Don't tell my congregation.)
So I thought it would be good here to compile the doctrine of the golf gods. What are things that we know about them?
With any luck, we'll have some substantive disagreements about the doctrine of the golf gods, forcing us to form golf denominations :-)
I'll start.
1. The most fundamental truth of the golf gods is this: they will always punish hubris. Any comment about having solved this game, or any aspect of this game, will be punished, often severely. There are lots of subpoints to this point, but this is foundational.
2. The golf gods will always permit the golfer having an abysmal round one fantastic shot. This keeps golfers coming back, allowing the golf gods to torment them more later.
OK, add yours! What do know about the golf gods and their activities?
Love this thread and even more so since a pastor started it! (Born again believer here but the golf gods are hard to deny)
The golf gods have a sick, demented sense of “humorâ€. Your all time best shots are often during your all time worst rounds.

Just got some Wedge Grips (Yes wedge specific grips) from Pendulum Golf in the UK. Things are freaking awesome! Good tackiness, nice feel, slightly oversized with less taper and good reminders integrated into the design.
(I intentionally install my wedge grips closed)
They also have putter grips too. And for some reason they though it would be a good idea to give me a 20% off code (DPATT20) to share. I don't get paid in anyway by them and just thought I would pass the savings on the all the spies out there interested in a grip that isn't from one of the big boys.
Those are very intriguing! Have never seen them before. Wish someone would make a Cord Dylagrip or something like this in Cord.

Welcome aboard!

Switched to Srixon Z star some months back from Pro V1. I feel like I get the same distance off the driver with less side spin on all shots. The Z Star performs in the South Texas winds much better for me than the Pro V1.
-
I know what you mean, it definitely takes an adjustment going from high spin to none. Is your front 9 or back 9 par 35?
36 front 35 back par 71.
Three par threes on the back nine.
-
That's a pretty solid day of punishment! What was your front/back split and are you still playing to your posted handicap?
+3 front nine and +1 coming in. The +3 wasn't even the balls fault. I made a double on a par 5 that was just dumb decision making on my part and then getting frustrated and wasting a shot or two.
Short game shots were really frustrating with the rock ball. I'm used to a tour ball check up so I was picking my landing spots based on that so I ran a lot of chips and pitches 12-15 feet by.
-
Challenge accepted. I added to the difficulty by not washing my Callway HX Hot for the entire round. If you are gonna play a crap ball it might as well look like crap!
This thing has "0 SPINS" and "-2 FEELS" as measured using the Titleist Tour Soft measurements.
Shot a 75 and then threw this bad boy in the lake where it belongs. I appreciate my Srixon Z Star's even more now!

Well said! Can't wait to see how long it takes someone to apply within though! 🙂

Well my putting has reached critical mass so I bought one of these off eBay to give a try. It's a spider black that theoretically should match my stroke as measured by Sam PuttLab. I don't like hitting putters on practice store greens so I just decided to buy a used one and give it a go. I can probably recoup most of it if it doesn't work. Fingers crossed!

Bad news just came in that he couldn't get my swing weights where I wanted them, which is admittedly a high SW for irons, so I will have to use some lead tape on these to get them up to D4. Going to try thin strips on top of the muscle cavity and then sharpie that last one so it will hopefully blend in.
