EthanSterlingPrice
As the topic says I'm looking to get a decent launch monitor for a humane price and I was wondering what y'all recommend? Not looking for anything too fancy just needs to work outdoors and be mobile enough to take to the range cuz I don't have an indoor area to use. This is the first time I'm looking around in this market so I thought I'd see if I could get some input from some of y'all who might have more insight in this area. Thanks fellas! MattF
It depends on what your humane price is. If it's $500 the Voice Caddie SC100 will work, depending whether it has all the features you want. ETA: The ES14 looks good as well. If you can stretch the $$ to $2,000 then the Skytrak is apparently good...personally, I'm not a fan of skygolf but from what I've heard, the skytrak is actually one of their good products. Of course you'll get the usual trackman or flightscope responses but they're way beyond your humane price. cwojtowicz
It also depends on what you are looking for. If you're looking for accurate spin numbers then some of the cheaper models probably aren't going to give you that. The one nice thing about the cheaper models (I'm referring to ES14) is that they give you some basic feedback and a general idea as far as ball speed and launch angle. You get what you pay for though. PlaidJacket makes a good point, used or a payment plan might be a good option. MmmmmmBuddy
It really boils down to what metrics you are after. I did a bit of research for our shop about 6 months ago when we bought another LM. If you just want launch and speed data, then there are several options. If you are looking for more in depth club path and face angle data, that will narrow the field, and increase the price. We decided that the Flightscope Xi+ was a very good fit for our application. At our shop, we do not offer any instruction, so most of the data fields that are included on the more expensive units would be lost or not used here. The Xi+ gives us very reliable launch and spin numbers, is portable, and has some cool combine style apps that will help with practice. The customer service can sometimes be a little suspect, but the unit is top notch. Best of luck!! jaskanski
I normally don't like asking people what they paid for stuff but,... how much was the Xi+? The Xi weighs in at around $5500. A lot of money (but certainly not the best) - especially if you really have no idea what to do with the data. As already stated, it all depends what you are looking for - and at that price point you really ought to be using such a unit as part of your business to recoup the cost. Otherwise, you may as well just pay for session use and save a small fortune.

EthanSterlingPrice
I've got a place near here that opened the other day and does have a simulator/launch monitor and I'll be using it for any reviews and testing I do from now on. I am going to save up and look into these options y'all have mentioned though. I do have an ulterior motive to getting one in the near future. With all the testing and product reviews I've done over the last year someone suggested to me that since I enjoy it so much I might start a review channel on YouTube and just see where it goes. Mike Z
I had done a lot of research on these before I purchased one. I agree with other comments about how you intend to use it and budget. A SkyTrak is going to run you around 2k - sometimes there is a sale and you can get a couple bucks off. You no longer need an Ipad for it. You can use ipad iphone or PC. I have found it it to be very accurate and measurements comparable to flightscope. The downside is that you only get ball data and no club data. It is also a not the best thing to use in natural turf as you need to keep repositioning the unit if you take a divot. That didn't matter to me. Indoors, though it requires a lot less room than other units When I checked - and I don't think its different now, Flightscope xi cost $2500. The unit measures both ball and club data but it does not show you everything - that's behind a paywall (upgrade to xi+ at $5,000 and/or their top-end model). I would say this technology is better for use off of turf. Downside is that it needs more room to function indoors. Their are models above (trackman, foresight CG2) and below (ES14) that give more and less data, but I am only including the ones I am most familiar with. One general word of advice, try to make sure you understand what each unit measures specifically and what data you want. Good luck. Distance and dispersion is pretty easy to gauge on the range without the use of a monitor. Picking a target and taking dead aim at it is pretty easy without a monitor too. If you really want to get the "feel" of what swing makes for the right distance and shape, then a launch monitor should be pretty much useless. The human eye is the most accurate monitor available today - and when you take that to the golf course after the range, it has the added benefit of being 100% conforming lol. Um, no.The range I CAN go to has four flags. Four. Not 20. So, for me to learn to hit a 70 yard shot and KNOW the feel, and ingrain it I, personally, need somehow to measure. I live in the Delta of the Mississippi River. Everything is flat. It's actually pretty impossible to just use the naked eye to gauge 50 yards, 70 yards, etc without some flag, mound, green, etc. With no land marks and no flags, it's practically impossible, actually. Ever watch Zach Johnson's range work hitting to the various cement blocks? He hits wedges to these blocks they've put on his range and keeps hitting at them until he finally does it. He leaned the EXACT feel of what it's like to hit a shot a specific yardage. That's what I want to do. Pick a yardage in my head and keep hitting shots until I've developed a feel for it. That's where the monitor becomes invaluable. Have you seen some of the "games" TrackMan has??? Very similar idea. The TrackMan gives a random yardage. One hits a ball to what they think that yardage would be. It tracks how far and how accurate. It keeps score and a person can keep going back and trying to score higher. So, yeah, to say I don't need a monitor and I only need "the naked eye" might not be completely accurate for what I'm trying to accomplish. But, thanks for your response!!! Gogolf
How do you find the lack of dispersion data? I like the idea of a voice caddie but the lack of data logging and dispersion data always puts me off. After a few swings I can tell where my miss tendencies are. I think I follow where you're going and to check my plane and swing path, the swing caddie can't pick up on it but it's so accurate on carry distances. It's hard for met to justify the cost/benefit of getting a trackman because the big box stores (PGA Superstore, Golf Galaxy, etc.) have launch monitors that show club-to-path data for free. I'm not following. To me, it's more than just hitting it close to the pins at the driving range because when I go to the course and laser a distance, say 50 yards away, I want to make sure I'm carrying it 45 yards so it skips and checks at 50 yards. Sometimes +/-5 yards could mean the difference between a birdie or a bogey/double. Voice caddie corrects me all the time. There are times, especially with pitches where the feedback on how far you're actually hitting it. Times when I thought i am carrying it 50 yards, when it ends up going 60+ yards. This type of self-feedback has been huge for my wedge game. I recommend checking out this Dustin Johnson video to see what I mean. Pros are constantly getting feedback to develop the right feel for distance. http://blog.trackmangolf.com/dustin-johnson-vs-trackman/
