NCAA Women Division I Championship

Recommended Posts

Kind of a odd decision IMO.  The course had received 7 inches of rain and was deemed "playable" but "not up to expected championship standards". So, the top six seeds automatically advance and the others just got dealt a pretty big $hit sandwich 😐. I think it would have been much better to say the course was not playable.  Lots of anguish from the parking lot area when they announced the decision.  Looking at the pictures, no doubt there was standing water and things were soggy, but lift & place, casual water relief, etc. could be used to make the best of a lousy situation.  All players have to deal with the same conditions/rules.  For a good many players, it may well be the end of their golfing careers.

I agree - lousey way to handle this. Just because you're in the top six going in, doesn't mean that's where you end up. Lots of egg on the NCAA officials faces on this one.

Gotta say the ncaa really missed an opportunity to show that women’s sports matter to them. Lots of places already stepping up and offering their course. I truly don’t believe this would have happened like this if it were the men!

There are certainly some similarities to what happened during the NCAA Basketball tournament. The men had full weight rooms set up in a conference center and the women got a small rack of weights. A girl from Oregon pointed this out on social media and after a litany of excuses, the NCAA made an attempt to correct it. Bottom line, NCAA makes a tacit effort at best, if it isn’t football or Men’s basketball. These are the two sports that generate revenue. Everything else is a victim of bureaucracy. Title IX at least provides some opportunities for female athletes.

Great tweet this morning stating that the LPGA cut a course down to just 12 holes in the Bahamas and played, and that’s true “championship” golf. There were a lot of options that they didn’t take a look at from cutting down the number of holes used, to moving to the TPC, etc. I would’ve thought they would’ve brought all of the coaches in and asked them what they want to do. Sucks, for sure.

Extremely disappointing to see. Especially with the continuous scrutiny & hot water the NCAA puts themselves in with women's sports that they would do this. Right after the fiasco from the womens bball tourney too. Not sure who's steering that ship but they make the captain of the Titanic look competent.

I'm not a big Barstool fan but good on Riggs for making this effort!!!

Since it will require the NCAA signing off, they will now come up with some crap about this being impermissible benefits and if the athletes play, they will be deemed ineligible.

Hopefully, they get a chance to just play.

Anytime the NCAA is involved, you know it's going to be a $hit$how!!!

This sucks for those women golfers...however, I'm not sure why people keep comparing it to the Women's NCAA BBall Tourney, that was a completely different situation.  College Golf doesn't really bring in that much money, regardless of men or women.  I will admit that they probably would've handled it differently if it were the men's teams, but there's no real way to know that for sure.

While yes, the situations were different, the optics are the same. It’s a bad look and when these examples continue to present themselves, particularly in the women’s arena of college athletics, the comparisons need to be drawn. This is the only way the narrative changes. This is exactly why federal laws like Title IX had to be implemented. The playing field is in fact, not level.

  • 2 weeks later...

So it now comes down to Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss.  I suspect this years national champions (a first for both teams) will forever have an asterisk attached to their hardware... completely beyond their control. OSU was really dominant yesterday and seems to be the oddsmakers pick. Grayhawk GC looks really nice for a Scottsdale public track.

Does anyone happen to know which tee the NCAA Division I women use?  I've been looking and not finding anything concrete.  I'm guessing white??

GolfStat.com is your Huckleberry!  They also have an App for your phone.

If you look under the "printables" tab, you will find course statistics.  The max set-up this week was 6,323.
