What older clubs would you go after (HALF MY BAG $)

Possibly just for fun, but I need far more knowledge on this than I have (and I do pay attention)

I wanted your input on what you would chase under these parameters   MEANING - WHAT EXACT OLDER CLUBS WOULD YOU TARGET.

Driver - under $125

Hybrids or utility - under $40

My current in each - Driver (COBRA F9 and I love it), Hybrids(decent various Adams and I don't love them), IRONS (Callaway CF16 4-AW)

OK here's my stab using eBay.

Driver - Titleist 910 D2 ($70 approx) or Callaway GBB/Big Bertha Fusion (around $120)

Hybrid - Cleveland Mashie ($35)

Irons - Adams CB2 or XTD (right at $175), but I'd probably opt to stick with you current Callaways if you're hitting them well.

For drivers, woods and hybrids I would look at Ping (G25, G30, G series or G400) in pre-owned sections. Another recommendation is Tour Edge Exotics. You can find Tour Edge in outlet condition in those prices.

For irons I'd check out Sub70. 699 pro or 659 cb may appeal to you. Their pr-owned section has some sets that you could obtain for around $170 if you trade your current irons.

As a bit of an addition (reply via direct message sent to me) I thought I would share.

Someone made me aware that Bridgestone irons (as I've also read about) are superb!

Then pointed out how their semi-sister sets  TOURSTAGE irons can be found for half a song quite easily, with super shafts etc.

So that's an interesting point I thought anyone reading this with intrigue might also enjoy knowing about.

Thanks

I think I'd search for some original Callaway Big Bertha irons from around 1986. They were super forgiving and as long as anything. I'd probably have to change the shafts now though to

something more up to date.

Thanks, I'm assuming you meant 1996.  Callaway didn't make these until '94 for the first time.  But I get your point.  Well taken too, because along with TA 845s, and Ping Eye2s I actually played a few rounds with a set of those from the mid 2000's.  Lot to like in those irons even if they look and feel odd.  They perform better in many respects than the current models.  With that said, I'm looking a bit more modern and must find something that is groove conforming without question.  So probably avoiding pre-2010ish sets to avoid any hassle if I were to be questioned prior to collecting my pro shop credit ... Growing up, one of my buddies had a Callaway War Bird driver. I could hit that thing off the deck like a 5-wood. I always wanted one.

In college, another buddy got the first Scotty Cameron I had seen to that point, the Futura. With the rounded crescent moon piece on the back. That putter felt so good.

I couldn’t afford either one at either stage of life at that point  but those are the two that stand out to me.

Sorry, none with the parameters set. All will be older technology and while they will "work" they are poor choices in todays market with the quality of todays products.

I play with guys daily that use 30 year old clubs and wonder why they go nowhere, why they cant hit them straight, and why the constantly shoot 90 or above.

If you're ok with the above, buy anything in your price range. If not, buy quality tools at a slower rate. An $80 quality used hybrid will replace several $40 hybrids or fw woods.

I carry only a 4 hybrid, 200 yard club.

Interesting perspective that the direction and score are tied to the age of the clubs.   I used to play Cleveland TA7 Tour irons which are now about 20 years old and still have a 6 iron.  I hit it at the range a few weeks ago and it performed well and I believe that if I had a full set of them I could still play to the same level I do today.    Found a set for $150 with graphite shafts on 2nd Swing.    I have a Tour Edge XCG7 fairway wood that I hit as well as my current 3 wood and they are $50.   30 year old drivers would definitely have distance challenges but probably wouldn't significantly impact score.

If the player has challenges hitting the ball off the ground then maybe more current clubs would help but that doesn't guarantee scores or ball flight.   Players with brand new clubs still hit them nowhere, can't hit them straight and constantly shoot 90  or  more.    The OP lists himself as an 8 handicap so he probably has some ability to hit the ball effectively even with older clubs.

His theory probably holds closer to true on woods than irons, if you have your irons dialed in and hit them as far as you need to its  different than a new Bomber driver.

BTW if the old geezer has a 30 year old Ping putter with the only wear spot the size of a dime right on the sweet spot, dont be betting against him.

I don't doubt that you could achieve with older clubs as could many better golfers (you and others under 15). But there's a reason we're low handicap vs those who are high handicap and the help given by newer gi and sgi irons (and associated) are better for them than older clubs. I've helped several get out of 30 year old pings and into Sim max and stealth sets which have had huge impact on their games, like 10-12 strokes a round.

I will also add that putting them in appropriate shafts instead of stiffs had impact on scores and swing results also.

I also think that most high handicap golfers (except those frequenting this site) have no clue about fittings, shafts, flex, or anything. I actually witness a guy at Dick's yesterday letting his wife order him a new set of Ping G430's. No discussion about fitting, flex, length, dot color, etc. $1600 down the toilet.
