First Thoughts

@Bluesman57 has posted some very nice screenshots of how the pages of the app display for play so I won't duplicate them.  (I'm only mildly upset that I couldn't do a nice unboxing series of pictures or video but I'm sure everyone is familiar with the App Store or Google Play.)  Download and setup were quite simple and the assist from @Wrong_Fairway in upgrading went quickly and smoothly.  (Thanks, Chris.)

For today's round I forgot to complete one important step before starting play so I did not get to collect the data that will go towards the shots gained stats.  My fault, not the app's.

I found the GPS yardages to coincide with those on my ShotScope G3; I liked the overhead view of the hole being played; entering data into the scorecard was simple and easy; and, tracking shot length was a breeze (except when I forgot to end tracking an individual shot and had a 180 yd. lob wedge BUT deleting the shot was also very simple).

Post-round I got an e-mail reminding me that I could login to the SwingU site and review my stats.

This was when I began to question whether or not I was ready to be a tester.  I mean, it is one thing to to see your driving stats as they appear on GHIN:

Screenshot2023-06-29at5_58_45PM.png.cf53c64ac82cb54192eae1899ca0f586.png

But it is quite another to see them as they appear on SwingU:

I look at GHIN and say:  Hmmm, need some work there, buddy.  I look and SwingU and say:  Holy Camoly, did you hit anyone?  🙃

All kidding aside, I'm looking forward to using the app again tomorrow, and this time with all the features engaged.

P.S.  I have a couple of questions for @Wrong_Fairway.  Would you prefer I ask them here of send you an e-mail?

Do your best to ask questions here as I am sure others will have similar questions and hopefully a look over this review can help answer them for them!

Hey spies,

I tried the free version of this app and actually liked it very much, and also the extension to my iWatch.. I really liked the tracking feature.

what I didn’t like was the instability and freezing up endlessly. It became so bad that I actually quit the app mid-round. I’m just wondering if that was happening due to the endless “commercials” asking you to upgrade to the paid version.

my question is: are you having any trouble with the app freezing up? This glitch keeps me from giving serious consideration about upgrading, which is kind of ironic, if the freeze happens due to its own commercials haha.

anyways, keep posting guys, it’s a very interesting app

Hey Sluggo, can you let me know what OS / phone you're using and which version of the app you're on? I'd love to get our customer service team to dig into this and find out what the issues are. Feel free to shoot me a PM on here and I can help you out further.

IMHO, one of the nicest perks of the upgrades aside from the game-improvement feature is the ad-free environment 🙂

Can you (or @Wrong_Fairway) tell us what additional features having an Apple watch bring to the on-course experience of using the SwingU app?  Thanks.

Getting the basics right with our companion hardware pieces has been a major emphasis this season with big integrations and improvements on the horizon.

As @acatalano32 mentioned, the Watch offers shot tracking, front/middle/back yardages, plays like distances, wind and score entry - not SG at this point. It's able to be used completely independently of the phone should you so choose, but I'd recommend the hybrid approach Anthony laid out to fully take advantage of the Pro experience, ie. strokes gained.

Lastly, to touch on the software bias, as I understand it in my non-dev squirrel brain, the iOS bias is a result of the one-size-fits-all piece that accompanies Apple and Apple Watch. We support WearOS and others (more complete list here) for Android, but the differing operating systems/phones require independent development and implementation, which as you'd imagine, is expensive and difficult to pull off. We've made some significant investments in that recently as well to curb that bias.

Yes, the ad-free environment… if I recall correctly, most other apps just limit or don’t allow the use of the extra benefits that are accessible with the paid version. But they don’t use “pop-ups” in the middle of the round while you’re actually playing. Things like the green slope maps, or like shot tracking. (Which you actually include with the free version!)

Im beginning to wonder it it’s the pop-ups that’s causing my problems…?

@Wrong_Fairway  I have used the app for 27 holes (two different courses) so far.  I have a couple of questions for you: (1) Choosing tees -- the only option I could find for both courses was "Men" -- should there be a more specific choice, either by color (blue/white/gold/red) or rating/slope, that I am missing?; and, (2) is there a way in Versus to edit post-round? (I know I made some errors entering data while on the course but I keep much of the same info on my physical scorecard and could easily correct those input errors).

I also had a question about editing clubs (e.g., deleting clubs I don't carry) but found the answer in the FAQ on the website.

Thanks.

Hey Tim, good questions!

The tee options are an ongoing battle as courses are constantly updating yardages/handicaps/ratings/slope, etc. If you can pass along the course you're looking to have edited, we can take care of that for you. Feel free to PM that info (a scorecard picture, if you have it, is always helpful).

You can edit your scorecards from the Stats tab. Click on the round you want to make edits to, and in the top right ... menu, you'll find Edit Scorecard. From there, simply click on the hole/score that you'd like to change.

This week I was only able to practice so I worked on each of the three drills the app suggested from each of the past rounds I put in. The interesting thing is, each drill was something I have been working on from coaching and watching video of my swing. For instance, my stats cited an issue with my long approaches and had a drill for posture. My posture has not been great, and something I have been working on this winter into this spring. The new drill actually really clicked for me and I am excited to get on the course this week. I am not sure if the predictive analytics they use linked that drill to my particular combo of statistical issues or what, but it was needed. Another was a putting drill that I already use, but went a little further and helped me beat my own practice putting game record. I am going to keep working with both and keep a close eye on the drills it’s recommending me and see if there is a real method to the madness or if it just got lucky. I can’t wait to get all this out on the course this week and really start testing the interface so I can work out my first impressions.

Have only been able to play 18 holes this week using SwingU (two 9-hole rounds).  I played an event this past Monday that explicitly forbade the use of DMD/apps that provide any "plays like" info.  I did not know how to turn that feature off so, no SwingU.  (Note:  I have since found out how to turn this function off in the FAQs on the website.)

A few thoughts: (1) I still feel like I am slowing down my playing partners while entering the data.  It has been pretty hot and humid here so I rode the past two days which probably added to this sense of being slow.  I'm determined to get more efficient in this area.  A user issue, I think, not the app.  (2)  I need to be sure to track distances ONLY on full swings     (3) When entering my score in GHIN I noticed a substantial difference in rating/slope between SwingU (73.5/131) and GHIN (67.7/124).  I will discuss this tomorrow with @Wrong_Fairway during our group call.

Also, it is really important, as the SwingU FAQ suggests, to not put too much emphasis on the result from a single round as opposed to the ongoing, aggregate results.  For example, here the results from today.

And here are the aggregate results so far:

Good feedback @tdc1

As I've mentioned previously, there is a small learning curve with the app, but we should be in a good spot as a few of your call-outs are simple fixes once you can look in the right spots.

We can discuss in more detail today on the call, but the Cliff's Notes for your feedback can be adjusted in the Play Golf screen, from round type - Tournament (to turn off "Plays Like" and wind aids not usable in competition) to changing the tees you're playing from (adjusting slope and rating).

Hey all, I wanted to thank everyone who joined in on the Community Call yesterday. It was great to put a few faces to names and meet other users on the forum as well.

If you missed out, I've uploaded the recording to YouTube and it can be viewed here

I mentioned a few curve-busting videos and articles during the call that should help those getting started or unfamiliar with the app, those can be found below. Our FAQ page is a great resource as well.

As always, feel free to ask questions publicly or privately and I'll be in contact as soon as I can.

Have a great weekend.

I also was not very impressed with the drills portion, I was hoping for more actual drills like head cover under the arm or alignment sticks in ground or something to set up and improve. The drills basically just give you practice ideas on how to play games on the range.

Overall this app is very simple, courses load up super fast when you go play, if you have an Apple Watch you can do 90% of your stuff from there. On first impressions, I would like to see some more/ better stuff on the drills section, maybe a teacher or swing coach that has drills on takeaway or rotation or something like that.

Thanks for the first impression post @acatalano32

One thing I wanted to clear up with you and others re: the drills library - this is a recent and premeditated decision to remove "technical" instruction from the app.

Having worked with a number of Top 50/100 coaches for our other business (SwingU Coach), we had a lot of the type of drills you mentioned in the app - the issue is (according to 10-15 top-100 teachers) is that technical "YouTube" instruction does much more harm than good, especially in a one-size-fits-all app environment with thousands and thousands of people using it each day.

Hence, the new performance practice library. Instead of conflating swing thoughts, feels and theories, we recommend going to an instructor for personal and technical instruction while these drills and games allow you to improve the skills you possess without making a swing flaw mountain out of a mole hill.

If you are interested in instruction from our stable of coaches, you can check out our instruction side of the website, where we still currently house a lot of the technical instruction you mention.

As for the club suggestion next to the distance you’ll have to disregard that for now.  The app asks you to track every shot and every club before your swing and then stop tracking when you get to the ball.  To be honest, this is just too much for me.  It is difficult for me to remember to do this when I’m walking up to a putt or a chip shot and focusing on my next shot.  This is a feature that would be better suited for someone with a smart watch.  Also, I tried to manually input my distances as I know them, but it does not seem it allows me to do so.

Wanted to point out that this available for you to do manually. Using the hamburger menu in the top-right corner, go to My Clubs and you can add in your clubs as well as the Average Distance.

These will be dynamically adjusted and averaged with tracked shots (outliers disregarded).

Test Update  (7/13/23)

So, I've managed to use the app for 10 rounds so far on two courses.  There is a bit of a learning curve although most of the problems I've encountered are explained in the videos and other links or direct answers from @Wrong_Fairway.  I consider myself to be fairly technologically competent but I found myself searching for the "Talk to Me Like I'm an Idiot" document in FAQ.  You know, the kind of step-by-step guide to a new device/gizmo that most of us skip because it would probably be insulting but that we later realize maybe we should have read?

Anyway, things I like:  (1) hole layouts and yardages are clear, easy to read, and, most importantly, accurate; (2) shot tracking; (3) post round summary and suggestions (including video links); (4) trends over time.

Things that are still awkward for me: (1) data entry.  This is mostly a personal issue.  I am very conscious of where my group is in relation to others on the course.  Regardless of the reason, if my group is going slowly and there is a group behind us on the tee or waiting in the fairway behind us, I feel very uncomfortable taking even the few seconds needed to stop/start tracking a shot, deleting a shot, etc.  Ditto for lagging behind my group after a hole is completed in order to enter data.  I realize this is all on me but I feel better for having thrown it out there.

Things that seem glitchy or unhelpful: (1) shot tracking.  I'm pretty sure I have never hit a 475 yd. 8 iron but there is one in my stats.  I know "outliers" are disregarded but still.  I have had difficulty several times when I end tracking, the app seems to acknowledge that I want it to stop tracking but will not let me choose a new club for my next shot.  Hence, 475 yds. (2) saving data for a hole sometimes results in a prompt asking me to "fix error" or "save anyway".  If I choose fix error, I don't see a clear indication of where the app thinks an error has occurred so, by default, I assume it is in approach shot length or chip shot.  I try both but if neither seems to be acceptable to the app I just hit "save anyway."  (Note:  this, too, may be all on me.)

And, a couple of questions:  (1) is there/should there be a way for me to delete my 475 yd. 8 iron post round rather than have it still hanging around in my stats scoffing at me? and (2) how are the rounds the rounds chosen that are used for handicap?

Tomorrow is another round (if rain holds off).

Good feedback here @tdc1

I share your anxiety when it comes to data entry / being overly aware of where others - specifically those behind me - are on the course. It's my personal preference (so take this or leave it) to take a look around and decide when is a good time to enter data. Sometimes that's after finishing out the hole first while holding the pin; other times that's the walk to the next tee; still others is 3-4 holes later (I'll continue using the GPS with the hole selector, but go back and enter 2-3-4 holes worth of data while we wait for a green to clear / tee off). If it's a particularly quick round with no one in front and little downtime, I'll even input data post-round. It's a 5-minute exercise for me, if that.

In regards to the Fix Error / Save Anyway, it could be helpful to read the subtext there - we've put in a few prompts that could lead you to your answer, ie. sum of shots inputted are more/less than your score, OB results in a 2-stroke penalty, etc. That should lead you to the right answer. Happy to discuss specific examples you have in PMs.

Questions
1) Yes, you can delete an outlier shot track. Click the hamburger menu top right, My Clubs and then select your 8-iron. You'll see the shots you've tracked there and you can delete any / all that don't fit what you'd like to use for club recommendations, ie. the 475 8-iron.

2) Rounds are selected for your SwingU handicap under the same system as the WHS / GHIN. For most of us golfers, we don't really consider how a handicap is established since we have the rolling 20 rounds in our GHIN account, but were you to start from scratch with GHIN (as you are with SwingU), you'd see the same process.

See the attached flyer from England Golf to see how a(n official USGA/R&A) handicap is calculated as you reach 20 rounds. We use the same process.

Thanks for the response @Wrong_Fairway.

Had an easier time today with the "fix error" moments -- think I got those done correctly.

As for deleting my 400+ yard iron shots . . .  Using both my phone and home computer I am able to see the shots that have been tracked with the outliers grayed out.  Clicking/double clicking on those shots does not make them active/editable.  I'm fine with that, especially seeing that the app recognizes them as the outliers they are, but thought you should know that on my devices (iPhone and iMac) I can not delete them.

Thanks, again.

Really think I need to get a watch for this.

I did go to try the app the other day during my round, but with a little rain and such I put the phone away and honestly forgot. I know there is so much information to do there, but truly dont like having my phone out when I play (mainly because I get caught up in all things the forum and get distracted).

So the watch hunt will begin!

I’m a Golfshot app user myself, dabbled with the free version of SwingU before settling on the Golfshot subscription. Looking at these reviews shows me how much I’m missing out on not going with the paid subscription to SwingU. I’ll be following this thread to see what else I’m missing out on.

Sorry to keep bothering you @Wrong_Fairway but I have encountered an issue with shot tracking (no, not how to delete my 475 yd. 8 iron -- you helped me solve that issue).

The last couple of days I seem to have problems with ending the tracking of one shot and beginning tracking the following shot.  For example, I select my driver, wait for the app to give the go ahead, hit the shot, walk to it, and end the shot.  I then try to track my next shot -- say my 7 iron.  I select the club but don't get the go ahead.  I try to track again and the 7 iron is already selected so I play away.  I reach my 7 iron only to see that it has tracked the length of both the drive and the second shot.  (I deleted those shots on the course so I can't point to the particular shots in question in my post-round summary.  Sorry.)  This has happened at least twice per round over the past few days.

Also, I noticed today that the par has been changed on the opening hole of both the White and Red courses at Riverwood Resort.  Both are par 4 but have been changed to par 5 (with a corresponding change from par 36 to par 37 for those 9 holes).  Looking back on my saved rounds I see the scorecard of July 7 showing the correct par while beginning on July 9 the added stroke appears.  I don't know why I didn't see this until today -- probably because I post hole-by-hole scores to GHIN after each round based on my physical scorecard and didn't think to check the virtual scorecard.  I can send screenshots if it would be of any help.

Thanks.

I chatted with our customer service guru Adam on this, and he had a few recommendations:

  • With regard to the shot tracking, the assumption we're making is you get to your ball, play your next shot and then attempt to begin a new tracking. The system needs a few seconds to save and reset. We suggest arriving at your ball, stopping the tracking for your drive, in your example, get your yardage and hit your next shot. Once you're ready to start going to the next shot, begin a new tracking. This should allow you to end your shot tracking, give the system a second to breathe - we're saying 30 seconds or so - hit your next shot and begin your next shot tracking excursion. Please report back and let us know if this helps.
  • For Riverwood, if you're playing an 18-hole round, we'd recommend using the 18-hole course - Riverwood Resort (White/Red). These were the ones that we re-mapped for you. Adam is updating the individual 9-hole courses as well today, so those opening holes will show the correct pars.

Tester Update

Quick update on my Strokes Gained metrics after 4 18-hole rounds included.

Data input for 90% of the time is seamless and not an issue, especially on routine holes when you hit the tee ball in play and hit the green and 2 putt.  Very simple and moves quickly.  The biggest hold up I have so far is on Par 5s, I am not sure which shot is being categorized as the “approach” shot.  For me many times I am going for the green in 2 and hit from 225-250 in and many of those times (all of those times) I am missing the green.  I want to use a hole from my round yesterday to see if I am entering the data the correct way.

Below is a screen shot of the data entry screen and how I filled out the information for this hole compared to my shot-by-shot description as follows:

Shot 1 – Drive in the fairway.

Shot 2 – 3W from 250 landed in the creek to the left of the green.

Shot 3 – Drop

Shot 4 – 40-yard pitch to 20 feet.

Shot 5 – Putt to 3 feet.

Shot 6 – In the hole.

When I attempt to enter the as shown in the screenshot it gives me an error message to double check my selections and giving me the option to “Fix Problems” or “Save anyway”.  I could not figure out how to properly enter this score and thus entered something that I don’t think is accurate.  Any Advice on how to address this moving forward? @Wrong_Fairway

I also want to include a screenshot of how my Strokes Gained stats are showing after 4 completed rounds.

image.png.edc7faf2389782a81cfeb19170db9efa.png

Though I do not think this is indicative of how my game plays out, I do think that this is pretty accurate for the last 4 rounds.  One thing that I think could be skewing the data a little is the fact that in the last 4 rounds I have a larger number of approaches that finished on the fringe.  As a result, these are balls that I am putting but not counting as a putt because the ball is not on the green.  I think this has greatly exaggerated my putting ability and thus negatively affected my perceived approach ability.  I am not sure how to fix this in the data other than realizing that this is just over the course of 4 rounds and all things will typically regress to the mean.  Also, remarkable that you can struggle mightily in 3 of the 5 aspects of the game but that putter can bail you out.  All things said this data and stats it spits out at the end of every round is great, if you are numbers nerd like me then this is some awesome stuff.  Way more in depth than anything I have used in the past.

Played earlier today before seeing your response and found a simple workaround.  After getting to a tracked shot I would "end tracking", hit my next shot, "start tracking" the club I just hit, and then start walking after I knew the app was tracking that shot.  Not a particularly elegant solution but one that worked just fine.

Also, will use the White/Red combo for Riverwood even if only playing 9.

Thanks.
