Splatt
G’day Golfers, The first event of the new season is now in the history books. There was some fantastic golf, some promising looks from a few players, a mind-blowingly long drive, a typical Spieth rollercoaster, all surrounded by lush green fairways and views of a calming blue ocean. What a way to start the season!! We’re staying in the picturesque state of Hawaii this week for the 2nd event of the 2024 season, and the first full field event, The Sony Open. Before we get into the event, a crappy joke: Why shouldn’t you play golf in the African Plains? * There are too many cheetahs. We’re welcoming back a couple of players who’ve had a long absence from the Tour this week. Gary Woodland will be making his return to the PGA Tour after having brain surgery back in September. That is an insane turn around for such a serious and life-threatening operation. Also making his return this week is Adam Sandler’s caddy, I mean, Will Zalatoris!! He played at the Hero World Challenge late last year, but this will mark his return to regular competitive golf after requiring back surgery last year. At the Hero World Challenge, Zalatoris open with an 81 but eventually remembered how to be awesome at golf and fired a 68 in the final round. The Sony Open is held at the Waialae Country Club a par 70, 7,044 yard course in East Honolulu. Home of the famous 'W' shaped palm trees. This event has quite a few corporate sponsors in it’s time, though originally started as the Hawaiian Open. Si Woo Kim is your defending champ at The Sony Open. He shot round of 64 ad 64 over the weekend to catch up to 54 hole leader, Hayden Buckley, and eventually win by 1 shot. Kim started the day 3 shots back of Buckley. Field Highlights · Chris Kirk – The winner last week at The Sentry in his 6th career win. Kirk played some steady and consistent golf last week with rounds of 67, 65, 66, & 65. He finished solo-3rd at The Sony open here last year, combine that with his win last week and I’d say that Chris Kirk really grooves with Hawaii. It’s early in the season after only 1 event, but Chris Kirk can happily claim he’s leading the FedEx Cup race. I certainly would, I tell everyone I’m under par on my round when I birdie the 1st. · Justin Rose – Rose is making his first appearance back to The Sony Open since 2017, it’s also the first time he’s qualified for The Sentry in a long while, so maybe the 2 are related. Maybe he’s only here for convenience sake, but his record here when he has played has been pretty decent. Last time he played here back in 2017, he finished runner up to Justin Thomas, the time before in 2011 he finished T-13, and the year prior to that in 2010 he finished T-12. Convenience or not, he’s shown he can play well here. · Si Woo Kim – The defending champ here at The Sony open. That was his only win last year, but he had some other pretty close calls; he finished T-7 at the Zurich Classic, T-2 at the Byron Nelson, and solo-4th at The Memorial. Si Woo Kim, while still only a young fella at 28, Si Woo Kim is a seasoned pro golfer, turning pro at age 16 back in 2012. He played a lot of golf last year with 30 events, and with only 6 missed cuts, you know he playes good golf far more often than bad golf. · Tyrrell Hatton – He finished T-14 last week at The Sentry; he played fairly consistent golf but it’s his 3rd round that hurt his chances of a top 10 finish with a score of 72, his only round not in the 60’s. Mr Angry has had 7 career wins but most of those have come on the European Tour, only winning once on the PGA Tour. Last year on the PGA Tour he played 21 events and only missed 1 cut, with 1 runner-up and 7 top-10’s to go with it, that’s a pretty good season if you ask me. The only thing he’s missing is more W’s · Corey Conners – The friendly Canadian himself, Corey Conners is setting himself up for a run at a great season. He finished T-33 last week at The Sentry (a 2nd round 70 his only round not in the 60’s), his record at The Sony open is a bit better finishing T-12, solo-11th, T-12, and T-3 in his last 4 visits here. His win last year came at The Valero Texas Open where an opening round 64 did a lot of the heavy lifting. His last event of last season was at The Grant Thornton Invitational where he finished T-2, so hopefully he’s trending in the right direction. The rest of the field can be found here. Time for another eye rolling joke. Where do golfers like to go on holiday? * The Golf of Mexico MyGolfSpy is doing a Pick ‘Em competition again graciously presented by Lamkin, the best grips on the market. I highly recommend getting involved even if you have the slightest interest in pro golf, it adds a whole other level of excitement and there are some awesome prizes up for grabs this year. The link is here if you’re interested. Join the fun and thank me later. That’s it from me. jbern
I didn't start watching until about 9:30PM EST. On Peacock, one of the groupings they were highlighting was the grouping of Ludvig Aberg, Sahith Theegala & Akshay Bhatia. I think I could watch that grouping every week! They all seem to have very different games and it was entertaining to watch their last few holes.
