Phil Mickelson talks club fitting with Callaway Golf

Phil stopped in at Callaway Golf and discussed club fitting. One of the most interesting perspectives on the topic I've heard. Specifically his testing on getting a particular club in the bag. Have a listen on the way to work if you have time, it's worthwhile.

Just listened to it. Very cool podcast and insight from Phil. I really liked how Phil doesn't need all his clubs to be the same lie

As someone who is gearing up for my first full-bag fitting this summer, this was a really great listen. Makes me think I should hit and ask them to turn off the screen and not tell me the swing metrics until after the fitting is complete, just let them know when I feel like it was a good swing or a bad swing. Phil said he does his whole bag in 1.5 hours. I can totally foresee myself when he says that you end up swing harder in a fitting.

The last driver fitting I did was more feel based then I saw the numbers. I kinda liked it better because I was seeing ball flight then had the numbers to confirm or deny what I was feeling/seeing

My last driver fitting was on an open range with no LM and it's working beautifully for me. Sometimes you just Gotta go with feel and the eyeball

I would rather know for a fact than guess if I am

Getting any gains... The old pull hook always feels like the best contact so good luck with that!

Good point.

Ah yes my go to shot.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

This gets at what Phil was talking about regarding blind fittings. If you see yourself hook a shot, the tendency on the next swing is to try to straighten it out. Instead, the hook might just be the club. You might end up changing your swing to fit the club, instead of changing the club to fit your swing. I wasn't suggesting I let a warm feeling in my chest guide my club fitting (do they even sell Birkenstocks with spikes). I do think it would be interesting to hit some balls (note which ones 'felt good') and then have a look at the launch metrics. Phil says when he does this they bend and modify all his clubs so that 'bad shot' misses is the exact same.
