Just thought I’d share a pic of @deejaid‘s persimmon handiwork in action

Real 3-wood + frickin laser beams = happy DLK. Although the vintage wardrobe obviously still needs a lot of work.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I’m just trying to pass on any little bit of knowledge I have that can help keep these old clubs on the course where they belong.

A fellow spy contacted me asking about the whipping of a friends 5-wood that came undone. He wondered if this is something most golf repair men still fix or if it’s something he could do on his own. I told him most old timers can probably do it, but it’s also something he could do himself, he just needed a little instruction and a few supplies.

Now, this diy is to show you how to re-wrap whipping that has come undone, which you can remove and reuse, or if the whipping is completely gone, using new whipping. I didn’t have any clubs that were ready for whipping on my drying rack right now so I just used an old club that I’d found that already had the whipping removed.

I have a few tricks to make whipping easier, like a whipping jig I built and use, but for this diy, I’m going to show you the easiest way for a guy at home in his garage using the most basic of clubbuilding tools can re-whip an old persimmon wood.

First put your club in a rubber golf club clamp and gently tighten so that the club is secure but can still be spun easily in the club. This is important to make winding the whipping easier.

Next, grab your whipping. You can remove and reuse the old whipping or you can use new whipping. I offer 5-yard spools for DIYers that will wrap one club, so that’s what we’ll use here. Take the spool and cut off about 8 inches of whipping and set it aside, we will use this piece later.

Next, take the spool and unwind it a bit. Lay the end whipping on the spool about 1/2” down the back of the shaft at the top where the whipping begins. You usually see a discoloration on the shaft to see where to start, just make sure it’s on the back of the head.

Wrap around the shaft about 5 times over the end to keep it secure.

Now, continue wrapping by using your right hand to guide the whipping while the left hand twists the club head to rotate the shaft in the clamp/vise.

Continue wrapping the whipping tightly until you are about five wraps from the end. Take the 8” piece of whipping you cut off earlier, make a loop with it, and lay it down on the back of the club head on top of the whipping.

Continue whipping over top of the loop your final five or six turns.

Once you have reached the bottom, thread the end of the whipping through the loop. Pull the loop up and the end of he whipping will be tucked underneath the last five rows of whipping.

Use an Exacto knife to cut the excess from the tucked pieces at the beginning and end of your wrap.

Apply some clear nail polish to to keep the ends secure.

And there you go. A nice, tight whipping, and an old club ready for many more rounds.

Although it doesn't effect me too much, I still find it a bit sad to see.
There are a lot of retired folks in our league. One guy in particular is in his 80's and is a really nice guy, but his mental acuity has been slipping quite a bit in the last year. He is my good friend's partner and I don't think everyone in our league really realized how much my friend "babysat" during a round to make sure Jim (the older guy) knew what was going on, had the right clubs, etc. My friend had to miss last week and it was a disaster with no one to help Jim keep track of what was going on. Our secretary had a conversation with Jim's wife about it and they had agreed to have either the wife or their daughter ride along with him and "caddie" to help him out. Over the weekend, Jim's wife called our secretary and told him they had decided Jim won't play anymore - it will picnic night for the family instead. Our secretary was pretty sad about it too, as he and Jim have been playing in leagues together for 35 years now.
Like I said, kind of sad, but I honestly hope I am able to play that long without becoming a burden to those around me.

Spent a little time at the MGS testing facility working on distance wedges. Goal was 1.0 smash factor and vertical shaft at impact to help get distance and swing speed to match.

Vertical shaft at impact is tough, I was typically 3-4* delofted.

30 yards was pretty good since that is the top end of finesse wedges.

50 yards was a tough distance as I hit most of them 40 or 60 with 60 seeming to be a good comfortable half swing distance.

The key to getting better will be practice time working on learning the swing feel. This will be similar to my work with the ExPutt; now I just need a launch monitor and a spot to put it. at home to be able to practice these distances.

I think it is time to move and get a house with a garage and skytrak.

WRX is OK, but since I don't drive it 300+ pretty much anything I have to say gets ignored. Sometime when you mention the clubs that you play on other sites, they act as though you're a leper. I don't post here that often, been around for a while but I enjoy the atmosphere at MGS.

I don't know if this qualifies as bought today as I have been acquiring the pieces over time. One of my hobbies is collecting putters. Over 10 years ago I was buying a lot of old PING B60, B61 and any coppers I could afford. I would pop putter heads off and have them refinished. Photos are of stainless B60's/B61's with updated KBS putter shaft, Ping Blackout Grips and you can't see but each as ProSoft Inserts and heavy back weights under grips. These were favorites in my younger days (late 70's/ early 80's). So I got them built/completed today -- feel like I bought them today 🙂

Well, I’m 61 and recovering from a quintuple heart bypass I had in June. Shocker as I am very active and play golf everyday. Anyway, while healing, I decided to spend some money (the old adage you can’t take it with you!). Keeping my Ping G400 driver and TEE EXS 3-wood. Just bought the 2 & 3 Titleist TS2 hybrids (loved my old 915H’s) and ordered some Ping i210 irons (5-UW) with AWT 2.0 shafts. My Vokey SM7 wedges and my Evnroll ER-1 putter are staying in the bag. Still have another 3 weeks before I can hit balls. Very excited to try out my new toys. Good health and happiness to all!

A blonde totaled her car in a horrific accident.
Miraculously, she had managed to pry herself
from the wreckage without a scratch and was
applying fresh lipstick when a state trooper arrived.
After taking a quick look around and inside of
the car, he approached the blonde and said, “Your
car looks like an accordion that was stomped on
by an elephant. Are you OK, ma'am?”
“Yes, officer, I'm just fine,” the blonde chirped.
“How in the world did this happen?” he asked.
“Officer, it was the strangest thing!” the blonde
began. “I was driving along this road when, from
out of nowhere, this tree popped up in front of me.
So I swerved to the right, and there was another
tree! I swerved to the left, and there was another
tree! I served to the right, and there was another
tree! Then when I swerved to the left, the car just
rolled over, and here I am.”
“Uh, ma'am?” the officer said, cutting her off.
“There isn't a tree anywhere on this road for
    twenty miles.”
He peeked inside the car again and added,
“That was just your air freshener swinging
    back and forth.”

    Your question is VERY timely.
My dad played yesterday and had an OB ball and so I built him these views based off of his "natural shot pattern" would be. This is part of hole number 8 at his home course. Uphill drive (32 feet up and then 10 feet back down) OB to the right.
I built him a 65 yard wide area to hit to. He hits his driver around 250-255. White line is OB.

If his target was the right edge of the ladies teebox part of the way up the hill, unless he put a BAAADDDD swing on it, he would "never" go out of bounds.
What he USUALLY targets though, is the tree out there (orange line) and so I showed him on this second view how naturally he's going to go out of bounds sometimes just w/ his natural shot pattern. So by aiming left more (over that ladies teebox), he hypothetically should "never" go out of bounds.

I built this as another example. This is hole #14, a tight, relatively short par 4. To avoid the bunkers on the right (and the OB) he needs to hit 3 wood (3 wood gives him a 50 yard wide landing area). Otherwise, with his natural shot pattern with driver (with that same 65 yard wide shot area), there is a high likelihood that he's going to go OB to the left if he tries to avoid the trouble on the right. Hitting 3 wood leaves him 140 in, hitting driver is 109, BUT he has a high likelihood of going OB.

He regularly shoots in the mid-80s, so even just this small help on two holes for him is going to be VERY worthwhile.

Was on track to break 90 for the first time ever - +14 through 15 holes, then went triple bogey, double bogey, bogey to end at +20 (+3 net). Was playing with my father-in-law who tends to play fairly slow, and we were paired up with an older couple who were also quite slow, so I think the long day and the heat as the day went on contributed to the collapse. Frustrating for sure, but I'm more confident than ever that breaking 90 is within reach this year.
Playing a new-to-me course in the The Falls in Chilliwack, BC. The course went into receivership a number of years back and isn't back into great shape yet, but it's a beautiful layout and it's clear the new owners are invested in making it a premier local course. Lots of elevation changes, including some really elevated tee boxes. I made good contact off this tee but unfortunately the ball plugged in the fairway, so it only went 292 yards 😆

Wow thanks to everyone for the well wishes and good advice.  Still feeling it today for certain.  Kenny, I went to the ER yesterday for just that reason.  I've heard of a few people who have fallen, bumped their head, thought they were okay and then died two days later from brain swelling or have had significant lingering impacts from this sort of fall.  As soon as I started feeling weird and noticed how big the knot was on my temple, I went.  As I was being discharged my nurse told me that they had a woman there a few months earlier who came in too late.
I will just take my time - did a quick video and a virtual meeting earlier - will only do virtual on Weds and off on Thursday.  Hopefully I'm back at it on Friday but if not at least for Sunday.  (I'm not preaching this weekend which is good.)

Sorry you had that experience. So did the rep indicate if they had the shafts (Recoil 760'S) with you flex in stock or were out? I am just wondering why he would think you would be ok to demo a shaft that did not fit to your specs.......
IMO, the sales rep could at least apologized and told you that you'd have to wait until other left hand demo's were available. The offer to build was nice but partial at best imo. Hopefully, the company will learn from a lost sale and position itself to support a little better. Thanks for sharing experience.

Hello Fellow Spies. I'm not new to the site, but this the first time I've posted to this thread. I usually go to other threads to read and comment. I've been playing for 55 years. I didn't really take it seriously until around 1975 when I was in my mid 20s. I live in Charlotte and play at Myers Park Club. I joined there in 1983. My current index is 8.9 thanks to some recent good rounds. I usually fluctuate between 9 and 12 from Summer to Winter. I truly love the game and play two or three times a week year round. I've been retired for five years. Golf is my main hobby along with gardening, reading and movies. I realize at age 70, I'm playing the back nine of life. Hopefully, I can keep going as long as this old body will let me. I moved up a set of tees to 6250 yards when I turned 65.  Most of the guys in my regular group are fairly healthy too. We all know moving up to 6000 yards is coming in a few years. Thanks for reading my story (if you did). I look forward to reading all your posts in the future.
PS I forgot to mention that I'm a recovering club nut. I'm try to not buy anything but balls and gloves for the rest of the year.

Been playing for 21 years. Started playing when I was 51 , 72 now. My handicap is a roller coaster with the lowest being 14.7 last year, and now 16.7. More rounds per week the better the number. Have hit 20 last fall trying to make a senior swing change.
Would be hard to live now without golfs many facets , satisfaction , embarrassment, challenges, competition, friendships, rivalries , and never ending journey trying to get to master what can’t be mastered. Trying to walk 18  three times a week, and hit the range/ short game as part of my work out routine is a bonus while enjoying the outdoors.
Have followed MyGolfSpy for some time but never really got involved. Always informative and enjoyable, while trying to master what can’t be mastered. Trust the crew.
I live in the panhandle of Florida in a small town called Freeport., 15 miles from Destin. My home course is Santa Rosa Golf and Beach Club.
I have no golf complaints. SRG&BC Will close 2021 for complete course redesign and renovation. A little anxious, but a lot of local courses to use but not home. Camp Creek , Kelly Plantation, Elgin, Rocky Bayou, etc,.
Retired , 10 yrs. Was a plumbing contractor in Miami.
At the time of my name selection one of the most frustrating things about my golf was how many three  putts I was having per round. I hate 3 putts , should never happen.

Had some time on the GCQuad yesterday since it was a
Most wanted testing day. Face contact location is definitely improving. I am still hitting the occasional toe shot, but becoming more aware of the feels and resulting ball flight and can identify when the feel isn’t right.

It is interesting how people respond differently to the same directions from instructors. When I was talking to my instructor one of the “feels” we
Talked about having was skipping stones. I remember a thread about a year or so so about a forum member being told to swing like he was skipping stones and how he couldn’t translate that into his swing. For me it fits perfectly into my swing sequence and a great feeling to try and have. But back when the thread was going on, the thought made no sense to me but now with the path I am going down it works for me.
