bens197
This year I've worked very hard on flattening out my swing. On steeper clubs, I could see myself flipping my hands at impact in order to catch up on bad swings. I am a RH golfer. In the mirror and on video, my ideal plane is left elbow at right shoulder. I am 6'2†and try to keep my backswing relatively compact and close to my torso. Here is my question... Irons are headed straight left. No draws, no hooks, only straight left along my target line. Solid contact but left. Good shots have been great but I'm working on that consistency. What have you done to slow down shoulders or speed up lower body to keep me from going left? Is there anything else I can do to relax this tendency? Thanks! gaussman1
So let's take a look at the "where" and work backwards. The ball is going left of your intended target line. If you have aligned correctly at address that means that the clubface is closed to your target at impact but square to your path. The goal is to have it square to the target at impact, right? For you (and me too, I fight a shut face) that means the face needs to feel open to the path through the ball. One of my favorite drills to help with this is done without a ball in the basement or garage. I line up with a wall just behind me and make very slow motion half swings where after impact (with an imaginary ball) I move the grip to the wall but keep the face looking at the target. This helps get the proper feeling of the face staying open to the path and the club exiting properly to the left. It also allows you to work through good positions without really thinking position thoughts. Obviously there are lots of other things you can look at starting at setup and all sorts of backswing positions but it's pretty hard to do swing analysis in a forum. Even a forum with as many swing experts as this one! RoverRick
When I get this result, it is often caused by allowing my head to move towards the target. Thus turning my ball flight into a pull. To fight this, I picture hitting the ball from the inside about the 7 o'clock position. This keeps my head behind the ball and results in the proper ball flight. Shankster
I've been running into this as well since flattening my swing this year. For me, I try to do the DJ move... get my hips out of the way. If I go 75% I still get the distance I was getting before, just slower and smoother. And focus on clearing my hips, it's almost effortless it seems weird. His swing is so fast but with irons and wedges is pretty dang smooth, almost looks slow. This is what I am trying to do anyways. I'm obviously not quite the beast he is, maybe someday. cnosil
Dead pull with no curve sounds like over the top since you are square to the path. For me when I get a case of the pulls I think about shortening the swing or keeping my back toward the target lionger. I never think about turning the hips because that gets me out of sequence. This is my thought and may not do anything for you. bens197
I took some swings after the round with a 7 iron but aimed at the 100 flag. The point was rhythm and good plane work. A lot of good here so far, thank you for your thoughts 🤙🼠Sent from my iPhone using MyGolfSpy Titleist TSi3 Fujikura Speeder NX Blue 60X TaylorMade SIM2 3 wood Fujilkura Ventus Blue 7-X Titleist U505 2 Tensei 1K Black 85 X Titleist T100 4-P Nippon Modus 3 120X PING S159 50-S 55-H 59-T DG X100 Vokey SM8 50, SM9 54 & 60 Nippon Modus 3 120s L.A.B. eddman89
One thing you might also consider is the offset of your irons or ball placement in your stance. Most non-tour irons are set with a draw bias to help the average joe not slice, however, the better you become with a well-tailored swing, you may notice shots go left. I had the same issue when playing a set of 2004 TaylorMade RAC LT's that had a tiny bit of draw-biased offset. They hit great but straight and left unless I placed the ball further back in my stance. With the same swing style but slightly steeper, I started hitting straight shots. The only downside was it affected club loft. I'm no expert by any means, but for kicks, I picked up the ‘14 TaylorMade RSI TP on eBay on a fantastic deal, and now I'm shooting arrows on good contact. Just some thoughts. This is definitely a swing mechanics issue. THEZIPR23
I have done the same thing with the same results but when it's good it is better than ever. I was trying to feel the club traveling to 1 o'clock towards the target to help slow down the upper body and let the hips take over. Surprisingly enough there are a bunch of decent videos on YouTube. downlowkey
Without additional context, I'd surmise that the focus on flatter plane may have resulted in some loss of backswing rotation - more specifically hip rotation. Put a little more focus on completing your hip turn away from the target and I bet your sequencing issue works itself out without any further adjustments.
