MGS Blog - We Tried it: Footwear Series

Recommended Posts

Got these as a wedding gift and I absolutely love them so far. Comfortable to walk in but stable enough for not feel like im wearing my running shoes.

IMG_8940.jpeg

Been playing for about 2 years in total. Winter breaks and a 6month period when I got sick. Starting to feel like myself again and recently played a “okay” round.
I currently have custom fit Cobra LTDx irons/wedges, a Vokey 60(cause my short game has been the best part of my game, and a Maverick 9 deg. Driver. Driving is the worst part of my game so My 4 iron usually takes alot of the long game abuse.

Well i am pretty interested as I have many shoes that I think would be comfortable on the course. However what about stability?

Thoughts?

I'll be honest, New Balance is one of the only shoes all the way around that fit my fat feet and I have owned 2 pairs of golf shoes from them.  They are comfortable and the durability has been great!  I prefer the spikeless over the spikes.

I’ve recently switched all my footwear to barefoot style shoes (xero & altra brands) and it’s been a success with the exception of golf shoes. Does anyone know of a golf shoe that has barefoot shoe qualities? I.e. zero offset, large toe box, ultra light, low cushion, low to no support

The biggest issue with my current spikeless adidas codechoas shoes is the offset or drop from heel to toe. It feels like I’m falling into the ball after having zero offset in all of my other footwear. I’ve researched most major golf shoe brands and the offset is usually 4-12mm or it’s not documented.

If all else fails, I guess I could try custom cleats! 🤔

Interesting. I've been wearing zero-drop shoes as my go-tos for probably 10 years, usually Altra; started wearing them when I was running marathons. But I also have Codechaos golf shoes and love them, and the offset has not been an issue for me.

As far as walking the course, the codechaos have been nice. I've noticed the offset issue because of hitting off of flat lies in the simulator. So now it's starting to bother me (I think just mentally).

Yeah I can see how that could become an issue.

Actually I should amend my earlier statement. I wore Altras for probably 10 years. But when my last pair of Altras wore out about a year ago, I bought a pair of Vessis, partly with my trip to Scotland in mind, and have been wearing them since then. Vessis, if you're unfamiliar, are very lightweight and waterproof, and I figured they'd be good for traipsing around a very damp country in October. Turns out you can also play golf in them. I probably wore them on half my rounds over there. I don't think the Vessis have a lot of offset either but I don't have the numbers.

Obsessed with chasing the dimpled orb.

Wow, I haven't heard of True Links Wear shoes before. That is exactly what I was looking for! Good to know some pros are wearing them too. The OG Sport fits the bill perfectly: water resistant, lightweight, flexible, wide toe-box, zero drop. Thanks @BallsLeon for the link!

Well... pros will wear just about anything if you pay them enough. Or use anything. When Tiger was raking in all those millions from Nike early in his career and thus had to use whatever they gave him, I remember somebody saying that if Tiger used something normal instead of the substandard thing he got from Nike, he'd win by 10 shots every week. I'm thinking it was their balls that were substandard  but I don't recall for sure.

This is a topic close to my heart as someone with wide feet that more or less lives in Altra trail runners and Injinji toe socks and like their toes to be free.lol

I bought ECCO Men's Biom C4 golf shoes last year and found them just about wide enough and comfortable feeling, but they really lack good arch support. The 'wide' option is to remove the insole and I've done that and tried various thin but supportive insoles and none have made them sufficiently comfortable. Also, due to rolling onto the outside of my lead foot on swing follow-through, the mid-sole has split (glue repair works for a while). Also, the outer fake-leather has worn away at the toe through use and they're starting to look tatty (despite following guidance I'd read and applying a conditioning cream to the outer through the summer). For >$200, they're not worth the money in my opinion. To me anyway.

Before Christmas I picked up some Adidas CodeChaos 22 for only $50 on amazon and thought I'd buy them at least for winter sim sessions to see how comfortable they are (mainly whether wide enough for me). So far so good. Much nicer arch support and general comfort, but walking courses will be the real test in spring. No water resistance, so maybe more of a summer shoe than spring. I like the tread wrapping round and up the sides, as that will allow my natural foot role that resulted in the Ecco midsole splitting.

In terms of wide toe box comfort, the True Linkswear felt great. Zero drop was a big plus too. However, I wasn't a fan of the style of the ones I tried on. Now that Golf Galaxy sells them, I'll take the opportunity to try others out in future.

The Asics Kayano look good and Asics make really nice shoes. But I would prefer to find something that offers all day comfort of my Altra shoes, with zero drop, but with decent support for golfing. I'm not a fan of wearing the Altras for golf (I tried). Maybe revisiting True Linkswear will be the answer.

The cult following for Nike has never been my thing. I've only owned 2 pair in my life and never got the allure. I guess I'm not a fashion-esque person though. I do enjoy seeing all the unique designs though! I'm all for funky!

I love the aesthetic of the Nike, the blue parts definitely look like old Ikea bags. As for the FJ gym stuff, I think that’s probably going to be a hard sell. Lululemon is a great choice, I haven’t worn anything from them I haven’t absolutely loved. Great reviews!

I tried a pair of Asics course duo boas and I really like them in spite of the 3 and a half star revues. I got the black and white pair then I got the blue pair which I haven't worn yet. I am looking to get the gray pair if I can find them at a decent price.

From a little bit ago, but worth sharing again.

As a spikeless fan this is where I pay close attention to what I am using and wanting. Would love to hear the memberships input on these and what they use as well!

I'm kind of curious as to if there have there been studies on the effects of spiked/spikeless shoes on a golfer's lead knee.

Only on wet days, will I even wear spikeless shoes that are as low as possible, so it's the closest to being a barefoot golfer ala Sam Snead.

On dry days, I'll wear barefoot shoes like my Vibram V-Alpha's for a little extra grip over the normal water shoes I wear at the range.

If I ever have to wear the spikes, my left knee, will have a low ache for 2 days after and reminds me of its dirt bike wreck, root cause.

I'm looking at the Barestep Actives, because with my "Coffee Table Toe" being a little crooked, it feels weird in the individual toe section for it in the V-Alphas.

1.) Barely not Barefoot, 2.) Spikeless, 3.) Spiked

Most golf courses here will not allow steel spiked shoes. And if you have firm plastic spikes, they can't be over 1/2" ? Turf and soft spikes are ok.
