doublebogey35
I’m in my early fifties and still carry up to 4 iron. Hitting Mizuno JPX 923 Tour irons 4-PW(which I love). Strongest part of my game has always been med/long irons. When club manufacturers started removing 3 irons from sets some time ago, I attempted putting a hybrid in the bag to replace it. I just couldn’t get any good results from the hybrid. Just looks clunky to me. Not a good start when you look down at the club at address and have no confidence in the club (and yourself to hit it properly). Seriously thinking about losing the 3W and adding a 7w. Set would be D,5w,7w,4-PW, 3wedges & P. Big moose
I just turned 69 and I haven't had a 5 iron in my bag for at least 15 years. Those hybrids are so much easier to hit, if I remember correctly I think it was JERRY KELLEY who said that using a hybrid was like stealing money. If it's good enough for him it's good enough for me. DHadley17
I play Mizuno Pro 223 4-PW and I have contemplated several times about trying out hybrids for my lower irons but I feel that my ball striking is too inconsistent with hybrids due to my aggressive down swing and ginormous divots. Playing golf in Texas you have to be able to keep the ball low and out of the wind on most days and I feel like my only way to do that is to keep my 4 and 5 irons in my bag. trike11 and Shrek74 2 Quote TaylorMade Qi10 LS - HZRDOUS Black Gen 4 80 -0.5" (Firm) TaylorMade Gapr 2i TaylorMade SIM 3W Mizuno Pro 223 TaylorMade MG3 50,54,60 Scotty Cameron Phantom X 7.
LWD
I replaced my 5 iron around three years ago, now carrying a PXG 5-hybrid. My next goal is to replace y 4-hybrid (also a PXG) with a Ping 430 SFT 7 wood. I carry Ping 430 SFT 3- and 5-woods, and they're really nice clubs. Easy to hit, and with lots of carry. The rest of my bag is PXG. agregory and Shrek74 2 Quote 10 handicap, French Bulldog owner, Sports enthusiast
papajohnp1975
BLUF: No, I don't carry a 5 iron. Even though I've been playing since I was 15 (and I'm 66 now), I came back from a 10 year layoff in early 2022. So I pulled my Ping i3 blades out of storage, knocked the dust off, and headed for the range. I quickly realized my days of hitting deadly lasers with my long irons were in the rear view mirror. 3 and 4 iron just weren't going to happen, and the 5 iron was running about a 20% acceptable rate. Luckily, my buddy at work (who nagged me for 3 years to get my clubs out and start playing again) also worked on Saturdays at our local golf store. He had already gotten me into a Ping G30 driver to replace my old TM driver from the late 90's. One weekend I went into the shop and he handed me a TM SIM2 MAX 5 hybrid and shoved me into the simulator. It's been in my bag ever since, along with a matching 4 hybrid I added a couple months later and a matching 3 hybrid I added two weeks ago (bye bye 7 wood). They're much easier to hit than the corresponding irons, fly higher, land softer, and give me infinitely more confidence. Longest iron in my bag now is a 6. Bad Golfer
I'm going to be 46 in a few weeks and I still carry a 4 iron and a 5 iron. The 5 iron is one of my most used clubs in the bag actually. I use it off the tee, for approach shots and almost always to punch out from under trees. I'm way more consistent and have much more confidence in it than I do my 4 iron. I have tried to replace my 4 iron with a hybrid and just can't find one that I don't hook. I haven't tried a 9 or 7 wood so it is hard to say how I would hit them.
