So I need it in little words.........

Recommended Posts

So I read through most of the threads with guys who redid clubs and painted them. So I guess I am looking for a consensus on a few things.

1. What's best way to strip it down? What materials will I need?

2. What tape are you using to mask off?

3. Can any of the paint being used go through airbrushes? Or does it have to go through an HVLP type gun?

My plan is to pick up an old beater club or two (like my putter if you saw my first attempt at this) and get a good technique down before I actually submit any of the clubs I actually play to the process.

Thanks in advance for regurgitating the info for a small brain like me to take in.

Lots of different options here, but I use Tal-Strip.  Just spray it on and then wipe it off and the paint comes with it.  Get some Q-tips and toothpicks to get into the nooks and cranny's of the club.

2. What tape are you using to mask off?

I just use the thinner 1/2" or 1" painters tape.  The narrower the tape the easier it is to follow a curve, but the longer it takes to mask.  You can use the real narrow tape to mask the edges and then cover the big stuff with the 2" tape.

3. Can any of the paint being used go through airbrushes? Or does it have to go through an HVLP type gun?

I've only done it with a shaker can before so I can't answer that one.  i would guess it just depends on what type of paint you buy.

That's it from my limited experience.  90% of the result will come from your prep work and taping.  Then just keep spraying light coats.  Lots of layers with light coats.  There is nothing more frustrating that getting impatient and seeing a big glob of paint start to run on an almost finished head.

Do a search for some posts from Rookieblue7 and Walkerjames.  Both have done some fantastic paint jobs and are much better at it than me.

I use either Tal-Strip II by Bondo Marhyde or Citristrip (depending on what I have at the time).  Beadblasting works well too

Masking?  I prefer Frog Tape as it leaves more crisp lines.

Paint?  Well, depends on what you want.  I have both an airbrush and an HVLP.  If you're using an airbrush, make sure to thin it and run it through a strainer (I would for an HVLP as well).

Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Bomb and gouge. Yes, I'm a club gigolo.
