Crazy shots

I was playing in a little game yesterday. We had three groups all threesomes. We were playing with full handicap, 1 low net score per team, 5,5,5 plus every guy threw in 10 for skins that were only paid for gross birdies or Eagles.

On 3 one of my partners was in for par, net birdie and I had a 25 footer uphill for bird. The pin was cut on my side of a ridge, I knew that off the tee and played short left accordingly. I gave it a run but pulled the putt, it rolled past a couple of inches left and about three feet past onto the ridge. My partner was about to whack it back, I yelled, (don't touch it), the ball came off the ridge, started trickling back toward the cup and on its last turn....dropped in for birdie!!! Skin city, I am now being called Bishop Pickering.

I've seen lots of crazy things on the golf course but this was the craziest good thing I've ever seen. Glad it happened to me and not against me.

What's the craziest and perhaps even most fortunate or luckiest shot you've ever hit?

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

-Craziest/luckiest shot would be hitting second shot on a par 5 with a power draw with a 2 hybrid to 240+yds. Walking up to the green and couldn't find my ball. Looked in the traps and behind. Buddy looked in the cup and there it was :) double eagle! Still no hole-in-one though.

-Most fortunate was playing a small course by a freeway, I-5. Using driver and hit a hook that looked to be heading right for traffic before hitting a tree and bouncing 90* back to middle of the fairway, needless to say driver stayed in the bag and I had a nice panic attack.

I don't know if this the craziest, but it is one of the craziest for me anyway. It happened on Monday, hole 15, I had 86 yards left, which should be a nice smooth 58* wedge, except I bladed it, it was on a really good line though, and I yelled at it to hit the stick, since there is really bad trouble behind the green, my only hope at the time was for the ball to square up the flag pole, it hit the flag about half up, enough to knock the ball 30 feet left of the green, after I almost chipped it in I took the par and loved on, the difference between a 4 or a 6 was hitting the flagpole. Not sure if it was crazy, or just plain lucky.

RevKev I think after that birdie you should be called Saint Kevin patron saint of the golf fowls ;) Well done and I pay homage to the use of your local knowledge!

Fire a double eagle!  You and Saint Kevin need to compare notes and Kor a Dor I always think when you are shooting at flags it doesn't matter what sort of contact you make that's where you were aiming so hitting the flag was planned sort of.

My fortunate shot came after a hooked three wood off the tee, a chunked 4 iron out of a dodgy lie and finally a 220 yard 3 wood approach to one of our longest par 5's.  I smoked the three wood but it was a straight push that was heading for the right hand greenside bunkers.  I looked away in disgust happy with the contact but not where it was headed and stuffed the 3 wood in my bag only to hear one of my playing partners exclaim "great shot" Greg.  The ball had bumbled its way through the bunker up a slope and hooked around onto the green and rolled up to about 4 feet and I duly knocked in the birdie putt.  It was the most unlikely birdie I've ever made I think.

A couple of years ago I turned a bogey or worse into a birdie.  I bladed my second shot on a par 4 over water and it skip across, hit the bank, popped up in the air onto the green where I made a short birdie putt.  That was NOT the shot that had envisioned!

I played with some older retired guys back in Michigan a few years back, and every time we came to the 8th hole on this particular course (Indian lake golf course), they would always say remember when "John'" made that hole in one here, the hole is a very short hole, 100 from he white tees, but it's over water with a 20 foot bank of rocks on the other side in front of the green, I guess he hit a terrible chunk that landed in the rocks bounced forward on to the green and rolled in the hole, I did not see it myself, but when 14 other guys talk about it every time they play the hole, I am inclined to believe that it happened. That would have been a really crazy one to see.

I have a few.

My dad's hole in one only was found whem we let a group play through only for them to find the ball in the hole. We figured it was in the woods, but he actually flew it in hitting the flagstick in the process. He eagled a hole the same way on a course in NJ. I told him to look in the cup 3-4 times and finally fed up that he was searching for it past the green looked in the hole and started to laugh. He knew right then he did it again.

My craziest hole would be probably playing with my buddy as his home course in J'ville Florida. I hit into a tree off the tee, chunked the punch out and then hit a 75 yard shot in the center of the hole. Nice easy par on 18.

I've had my fair share of unlucky hits though, I hit a flagstick from nearly 170 yards out on a par 3 only for it to end up on the worst greenside hill and ended up taking a 4. Also hit on and had it go 30 feet back.

Perhaps the best one is hitting a hyrbid into a 200 yard uphill hole and pulling it left towards the cart path. IT somehow managed the S turns perfectly because as we were walking up the cart path my buddy goes whoa and foot saves a ball into the rough about 10 yards up. My ball rolled all the way back, if not for him I might have hit a -30 yard drive or would have ended up in the lake behind the tee box. I've also managed 2 times to top the ball so bad it rolled back a yard from where I swung at it.

This story reminded me of a story about 8 years ago.  A friend of mine who was about 82 at the time, originally from Waverly, OH  was playing his private club in Naples FL, Quail Run GC.  The ninth hole is a par 3 about 165 where the fairway doglegs right around a lake.  It's a carry over water to the green.  He hit driver and cut it around the lake, never leaving the ground and killing several worms along the way, up onto the green and in the hole.  It was his second ace.  He got his first one at age 41, and was thinking his next one would be when he was 123.  Sadly, he died at age 87.

Was playing Bluebonnet with a former coworker of mine. I had gotten an ear full because I hadnt told him him could cut the corner on a hole on the front nine. So when we got to 15, i made sure to tell him that you could cut the corner, and if you feel froggy, the green is driveable (Blind shot into a green sitting 267 to middle). He looked at it for two seconds, paused and grabbed his 4 iron for a straight shot down the dog leg to leave him a good look at the green.

As I tee it up, I look over to the group of trees and scrubs hiding the green. My friend casually asks, " Gonna go for it?" With a grin on his face. I shrugged, reached for the driver and announced I would indeed "Let em hang". I crush it. Line looks good, but as it disappears over the trees, I think it is too long and i flew the dogleg and end up in the next fairway.

We get in the cart, and head for his ball. He makes a nice little 9 iron shot to hit the fringe on the short side of the green. As we are driving up to the green my buddy points and says "Dude, there is a ball on the green."

We get there, and I can see the red "H" I mark my balls with before I am out of the cart. It sits four feet from the hole, on what I thought was a pretty straight putt. It wasnt. I two putt for birdie.

But I still was very happy about the drive. I quickly pocketed the ball and announced I was changing balls, lest I royally screw the pooch and loose the ball on 16-18. As a self-fulfilling prophecy, I promptly hit my tee shot so far OB on 16 it wasnt funny.

On a side note, 15 was where i watched jdiddyesquire hole out from a green side bunker a good 30 yards from the hole. Amazing shot.

Great story BITW, to date I've only ever driven one par 4 green and that was when I was serving in the Army here,  From memory I two putted for birdie as well and shot 76 6 over the card.  It was the Burswood Casino and Resort course that is now defunct and been replaced by a football stadium.  It was a great course par 70 and had a couple of driveable par 4's and writing this I remember driving the other one somewhat more recently but 3 putted it for par. Grrrrrrr a not so happy memory lol. :)
