He’s got a nice athletic scholarship at a NAIA school in central Florida to run cross country. Very proud of him and my daughter who has raised him and his younger sister and brothers both high schoolers, too.

Afterwards we went to my house for a cookout and backyard fun. The boys were throwing the football around having their step dad through while they took turns running routes with the other one playing DB. His arm gave out.  Daughter Justine was a reasonable high school track athlete but can’t throw so they asked me, how far can you throw a football?  I haven’t thrown one since WD moved here - 18 years. I’ve hardly thrown anything on that time other than a frisbee for the dogs.

First throw was one hop short. Second throw was a beautiful 30 yard spiral. Christopher says, “Grandpa will do,” and Deacon who plays on the football team goes, “Woah.”  I lasted half an hour and threw some pretty nice balls (and some wobblers).  Point is I’m in full pinch me mode that I could go out in the backyard and throw a football well enough to satisfy two high school aged, athletic grandsons. I’m going to pay for it tomorrow but boy did I have fun playing with them today.

I’m really curious about how you end up liking the eye grind. I was very curious about it, but went with what I was fitted into for the test.

Keep us posted on how things go, very interested!

I will let you know - it was my alternate recommendation in the online hitting but my live fitters top choice for me especially once I told him that I gamed the original Eye 2 for nearly 20 years.

@revkev, glad you enjoy the S159's, and again, as @bens197 mentioned, it's incredible how we all can compliment the Pings on their ball flight, spin rates and how forgiving they are.

I really feel these are probably extremely underrated as not everyone think of Ping when it comes to wedges, but Ping have done such an incredible job on these that it should feature on every wedge-hunter's shortlist!

Prior to switching over to SCOR and the v-door I was a Ping Wedge guy.  The knock then was that you couldn’t open the blade and they were cast not forged. I haven’t gotten there yet but these look like there’d be no problem opening them up. I suppose it depends on the grind but I have had no issues with a wide variety of lies although our rough hadn’t really grown in yet - that’s coming soon. 😞

    All good 😊

Having uniformity works better and makes an already great club even better.

Im glad I gave the stock a fair shot and quite surprising to me was the Dynamic Golds. Yes, I’m a hype man for the Modus 120 line. Having played DG’s for 30 years it certainly wasn’t new to me. I was pleasantly shocked at how well I have enjoyed them and they’ll stay put.

Interesting on the shafts - my fitter put me into steal on my s159’s - I’ve had graphite in my wedges since going back to a SCOR test that I was a part of for MGS about 10 years ago. I’m in a dynamic good lite - the last steal that I had were in my original SCORs and I think they were around 100 grams - so are these new ones - very good results in the s195’s thus far. I love the ball flight and spin, very nice around the greens and the Eye 2 grind on my 58 reminds me of the original Eye2 - which is great for me.

    Very impressed with these wedges.

... The one thing I find difficult to address is the $880 price. Before playing my autoFlex I would never have considered a shaft over $350. And reluctant to even do that without exhausting and sales available. But money means different things to different people as well as disposable incomes. And age. I am much more interested in an additional 10yds or more with improved accuracy at 71 than at 41.

... So with no comments about price or is the shaft worth it, for me it has been nothing short of amazing. I will address this in more detail in my final review but things started out very shaky. The Dream 7 is so unique and when you waggle it you think no way I can hit this with a normal swing. The irony is this is when it performs best for me. I already have a smooth swing and transition so no adjustments were needed, but I sure made them my first 3 or 4 rounds and I would have one or two drives that really peaked my interest but the rest were marginal or worse than the shaft I was playing, Ventus Red Velocore.

... But once I ignored how loose the AF feels when you waggle it or put your weight in the butt and bend it (just an amazing amount of bend) and just swung it like any other shaft the results immediately improved. By my 6th round I had complete confidence in it and am averaging about 10yds farther with some even longer than that. But the real surprise is for such a flexible shaft, the dispersion improved. Slight mishits are better although a bad swing will produce bad results so it doesn't perform miracles. But longer and straighter have been a real bonus for me. And the colors are cosmetic just giving you the option of picking what looks best to your eye.

... I think the final reviews for the 6 of us testing the Autoflex Dream 7 will be indicative of what anyone can expect. It works OK for some, doesn't work at all for others and some will find mind boggling performance.

I have an earlier iteration of an auto flex shaft - got it on eBay at a somewhat reasonable price - when I hit it - I hit it but I also had the two way miss with it -

Back to the topic of this thread TMag is sending me a Stealth 2 head - I was able to get the spin rate of the Qi10 down to 3,600 with the Ventus that I pulled from my SiM2.  However it’s still significantly shorter and less accurate for me than the damaged driver they were replacing - to me that doesn’t speak ill of the Qi10 but rather it speaks to the importance of fitting. This head is different from the stealth series, it requires a different shaft - at least for me.

To recap with the same shaft that was regularly producing a launch angle of 14 degrees and spin rates in the mid high 2,000s was 19 degree and spin rates of 5,000 plus in the Qi10. The difference between miss hits and solid strikes with the Stealth 2 was about 15 yards. With the same shaft and 10.5 degree lofted Qi10 head it’s 30 yards.

I’m guessing I’d be fine with the stock blue vented shaft cut down to 44.25 and perhaps a 9 degree head or even the LS. Just a different head than the prior line - certainly wining lots of money on tour!

  6. What a day! I wanted to play nine holes this afternoon after church because I’m dying to start testing the golf gps component of this watch and I hadn’t gen able to get on the course in a week.

Church this morning was extremely demanding though. First the sermon was the longest one I’ve ever preached. In my tradition 15 minutes is about the standard length and I try to stay under that. Every so often I hit 20 - 31 at the first service and 28 at the second for me today - honestly I wanted to see if could do it and keep people’s attention - just once - I think I did but I’m not doing it again- it’s exhausting and tough on the voice

Also we had issues with our projecting equipment at the contemporary service - that’s why the sermon was longer - I actually referenced my test and the watch by telling them my stress level still wasn’t high despite what was going on - it got a laugh.

After church I had a couple tell he they are getting married - that’s awesome, really like them - she’s  architect - he played hockey at Harvard - pretty cool couple.

Then my most recent wedding - from early March wanted to visit with me because they are having some issues - that was a lot longer than the sermon but nothing insurmountable - really normal first year of marriage stuff - I like that couple a lot also, they will be fine - my stress level when they left was high btw.

Got home, had lunch, chang d and got to the course at 330, no issues getting out, hit the range at 340 with a 4 PM tee time and after 29 minutes the skies opened.  Looked at the radar - no rain on it - rain stopped quickly and tee’d off - wind had completely shifted and was coming hard at me. Got to the second tee and the skies were dark to the north, wind was picking up in my face.
By the time I got off the 3rd green it was pouring - hid in a grove of trees - made a dash for it completely soaked.

Here’s the message on my watch when I got home:

IMG_0487.jpeg.4d867c0195f42e1df2ae35406bd36048.jpegIt told me that I need an 8 hour recovery time - I’m glad it identified church this morning as a part of the high level of activity - very impressed.

  7. I thought I replied to this one - sorry - honestly I think Taylor Made is honoring its 2 year warranty here. The SIM2 line is 3 years old. Your friend could have bought a set on clearance last month, in which case it would be covered or he could have been in the first wave, in which case it would not.

I’m having an issue with theM over driver. My year old stealth 2 developed a rattle. Loved that driver - they replaced the head only with a Qi10. It is not working with the Stealth 2’s shaft. Others that I’ve spoken with have told me the same thing - shafts that fit a player in the stealth line did not in this iteration of Gi10.  I ran I to my golf tech fitter at the range this evening and  he’s going to take up the battle for me.

Maybe your friend could go back to the place that he bought the irons and get a receipt?  Does he have a credit card record of the transaction?  That might work,

  8. I think this is like so many things that we love about golf.  Since there are no industry standards, what's a 5 iron and what's a 9 wood?  My 9 wood is similar to yours 23.5 degrees is what it is marked.  The longest iron that I game is 7 iron which has 29 degrees of loft so its a 5 1/2 iron for you.  I do game a 26 degree hybrid that says its a 5 but given the strength of my 7 and the loft on my 9 wood that is longer, it fits in nicely as a so called 6 iron substitute.

Honestly any more I just go by how far I hit the things rather than what they say on the bottom.  If someone is really pressing me I'd say that my 9 wood replacing a 5 iron and my 7 wood replaces a 4 iron.

    To me thought its

    7 iron 155

    Hybrid 165

    9 wood 175

    7 wood 185

Carry distances are 5-7 yards shorter than those numbers.

  9. I just realized that my SIM 2 that’s out in the shed has the Ventus Blue that is stock with the Qi10 - the forerunner of it that is. Threw it in and hit balls into the net - Swong Speed went up 3 mph pretty effortlessly and could find the sweet spot.

    Hmmm

my auto flex has a Ping adapter - I have an extra TMag one kicking around though -

  10. I’m very anxious to see these different shafts - the same shaft that I was fit for with the Stealth 2 is a debacle with this head. Launch and spin are too high. 😞

Our club champ was practicing next to me last evening - he played at auburn and is a plus 4. He told me his shaft and loft are  significantly different with this head than the Stealth.

I’m going to be very upset if I need to buy a new shaft - I was happy with the driver that I had it’s not my fault that something came loose or got into the head. I did reach out to Taylor Made again. Right now I’m ready to go to the SIM 2 that’s in my storage shed. 😞

  11. Thanks for the explanation - cnosil gave the stick answer - it’s almost always wisest to take the longest club that doesn’t risk a penalty of some sort (trees are penalties.)

So if you have holes  where you need to take less club to avoid a penalty I’d do that - however I would not eliminate the longest club in the bag just because I’m going to hit fairway wood or driving iron a few times. See your SUV Maserati reference - that was great. 🙂

  12. Not a chance and we are the same age - I need every inch I can get. If I could average 270 which I’ve never been able to even when I was a very low, between 1 and 0 handicap I’d have considered giving up 10 yards to hit more fairways if I averaged 6 - I averaged 13 at around 250.  Just take less club and whenever you can use your distance - use it and forget about fairways. For the most part they are over rated

  13. Yeah that looks too thick to me - particularly for around the green - let’s face it for moray of us getting the ball around the green is a good shot - you’re growing rough like that for touring pros to make it a challenge to hit a par 5 in two.

But I remember living in the northeast and private clubs loved to have thick rough everywhere. This is the time for it, too.

Since you asked I think two inches of rye and an inch and a half of Bermuda is about right - that’s enough to be about 1/2 stroke penalty

  14. Timely topic as we just bought tickets to a game in two weeks. Rays season members this is the longest I’ve gone into the season without going to a game in a while - my daughter has already been to four.

And yes, this is great news.

How about this discussion that a friend and I had yesterday afternoon - would you sign Juan Soto at 14 years 600 million?

Beside planting stiffs, dunking babies, and trying to ignore the shotguns during marital vows, Rev [ I know you're in Florida], it seems to me that you're pretty much a professional golfer!  [I have more time but less athletic ability, so I can't emulate.]

The sand game is a problem to me as well, but I do much better with an oval-faced, very curved leading edge wedge that's absolutely useless from a tight grass lie.   You mentioned bagging thirteen sticks, thus the unsolicited tip from an unqualified source.

I’m a step ahead of you my friend.  My new 58 degree wedge has the Eye 2 grind - Very good for traps or rough around the green - not so hot for tight Bermuda grass fairways but it’s not going to get the call for those shots, anyway. When I used to game Ping Eye 2’s I had a low bounce 60 that I used for those shots. I’m not at that level as a player anymore - I will take a 15 footer with my 54 and move on 🙂

    It's like Paradise.

You’re about an hour and a half north of me. Great round!  My goal is to be able to post a round where I shot my age in this thread.

My career low was a 66 and I’m 67 so it’s time to think this way and a great incentive to play more and to be more focused when I do. I had cataract surgery the end of last year, started taking lessons again in February, got fit for driver and putter last year, irons and wedges earlier this month and the clubs that I was fit for between my longest iron and driver were fit five years ago and still work great. Now that school is out I have time - I’m putting in the work on what’s needed. The club that I moved over to is the last place that I broke 70.

Ironically I’ve never shot a 67, one 66, a handful of 68’s, enough 69’s that I can’t remember how many but never a 67.  I turn 68 in October BTW - I feel like this is a race against time and health. Praying that God grants me both on this one.

  17. I would skip the training aid unless it was recommended by my teacher. IMO you have two choices if this is a budget consideration - lessons or new equipment -

Actually equipment does matter way more than an earlier poster implied - as an extreme you’d need a very different swing if you had 1920’s equipment than you would to be successful with 2020’s equipment. Obviously the difference between 2015 and today isn’t as dramatic but it is there and if you weren’t fit for your 2015 set it’s there to the tune of several strokes - possibly enough to get you to your goal by itself.

Here's the issue with either choice -

Training aids will force you to swing a certain way that might be very different from what’s working for you now. As a 12 you have things that work. They need to come with a coach who knows what he or she is doing.

Lessons are great so long as you find a good teacher - I’ve changed clubs - I like the pro at my new one, a lot.  He was the pro at my old club when I first joined but I never took a lesson with him. I’m in the middle of a swing change so I arranged to stick with my old teacher to complete that process by sticking as a social member at my old club.  You need to do your homework because a bad teacher or the wrong teacher for you can mess you about almost as quickly as the wrong teaching aid.

Clubs - if you’re going to invest in expensive equipment and your goal is to improve, get fit through the bag up to and including the ball. But be sure to find the right fitter. That’s huge.  So again, do your homework.

Good luck and let us know what you decide and how it works out.

  18. My new irons arrived on Friday.  Played Saturday, right after performing a funeral so only had a few swings with them -  did hit some good shots but also some very squirrely ones.  Got to the range yesterday afternoon and again this afternoon - my teacher has me working on working on coiling the upper body and then releasing with my legs - I told him about my goal to shoot my age and he's looking to get me some extra yardage - today it really kicked in with driver on the range - I was absolutely hammering it long and straight.  Also hit 7 iron very well - nice and high, baby draw, plenty of distance - very happy - part wedges were NG - I need a ton of work there - I'm trying to learn how to swing faster and its not conducive to partial shots yet - we will get there, I'm sure.

Went to the practice green - no one was around so I figured it was safe to try sand shots (I'm so bad at them that my teacher has given up on me there for the time being.) I watched a Padraig Harrington tip on trap shots the other day - it was pretty much the opposite of what gets taught - closed stance, almost all the weight on the left foot, don't open the club face too much, take the club back inside the line and swing over the top - first swing the ball came out and rolled to 6 feet - I found I was at least able to get 12 in a row out of the trap - there were two skulls and a shank but everything came out and the shank would have been playable - the skulls not so much but I also realized that I played those balls from severe uphill lies and he had said you need to set your shoulders at the angle of the hill and I did not.  Once I did, I was able to get out okay - I will need to experiment with less loft for that shot - at least I now have something to work with out of traps!
