What a great story and wonderful thread. My lowest round ever was totally over shadowed by my league teammate breaking 80 a number of years back.

He had done it before. What made this remarkable was that he had significantly advanced Parkinson's. His putter head was shaking through the ball and the thing was still going in.

Thanks for reminding us about how much fun the game is!

Played as a single at Crystal Lake Golf Course in Lakeville, MN today - one of the last times I'll play it before we move east. It's a fun course, always in great shape and well conditioned - not overly long but you do need to think your way through it.

Breaking 80 is really the Holy Grail for golfers - I guess it validates you as a playah. I can remember trying like hell to break 80 and how good it felt once it happened - so good that you wanted it again.  It's really hard to break 80 for the first time, but once you do, the floodgates open and you can do it more often, to the point that anything over 80 on y our home course feels like a lousy round.

Anyway, I was paired up with another single - a kid (I call him a kid, he's 37) named Paul. Sometimes when you hook up with someone on the course you just know it's going to be a good day.

Paul told me about how his family fled Cambodia and the genocide of the Khmer Rouge when he was only 4, and then lived in a refugee camp in Thailand until they were finally able to come to the US when he was about 7. We talked about parenthood and being married to German women (they forget NOTHING. They remember stuff that hasn't even happened yet!).  Anyway, Paul showed to be a pretty decent ball striker but told me he had never broken 80 - and that was his goal. He'd been close - 82 was the lowest - but you could tell is was something he wanted.

Paul finished the front 9 at 6 over par - so he had 2 strokes to play with (Crystal is a Par 71). He saved par on 9 with a great up and down, but he didn't like his chances. I told him to take it one shot at a time and you never know.

On the back 9, Paul started par-par-birdie-birdie-birdie -- the first time he had ever had 2 birdies in a row, let alone 3! On the par 4 15th he flew his approach about 35 feet long and left his first putt about 7 feet short - and drained it to save par.  On 16 he hit driver (not a driver hole) and put it in the weeds of a creek that cut through the fairway. We found it and he did have a shot - and hit the thing about as hard as he could with a wedge and hit the green, leaving an uphill 30 footer. I could tell he started gripping the putter a little tighter because he left his first putt about 15 feet short.

Well son of a gun if he didn't drain that one to save par.

Paul had a 3-putt bogey on 17 (again, a stranglehold on the putter) so when we got to 18 I mentioned it looked like he was gripping the putter a little tight. He hit a nice drive into the fairway and then his approach to about 18 feet, with a sidehill uphill putt.  Again, he left it about 7 feet short - he said he might have gripped it a little tight, and then drained that putt to save par - finishing the 9 at 2-under.

We waked off the green and he tallied up his score - an 80 shattering 76.

I've never seen a guy so happy with a score ever - he wanted me to sign the card and attest the score so he could show it to his buddies. Dude was walking on air!

And the thing is, I had almost as much fun watching Paul shoot his 76 as he did shooting it. What a great moment and it reminds me why this game is so much fun.  I told Paul about the forums and I hope he joins up. You guys would like him.

There was one downside - he beat me by a stroke!

Subbed tonight in league. Straight up match with both of us off 5. I shot +3, he a +6. Highlight was the last, SW over a 120 ft tall tree from 65 yards to 2 feet for birdie on the par 5. Almost played it safe, decided for the challenge

Sounds like in your case "motion is lotion". Ankle pumps and circles throughout your day, everyday might help. Given your history it may even be worth a Physical Therapy visit or several. They'd be able to assess it more thoroughly, mobilize it for you and give you some better exercises.

... Went out as a single to my favorite local course. Got paired up with 3 guys in their late 60's that wanted to play the tips. They like to rotate from white to blue and today wanted to play gold, something they do only a few times a year.  I am 64 and moved up a tee box 4 years ago but what the heck I was game. Shot a 68 last time I payed there from the Blues at 6455 yds. We played in 10-15mph winds at 7007yds and most holes were a little longer and it was fun using different clubs especially from the tee. But 448 into a 15 mph wind and uphill the whole way was a bear! Hit a good drive and a decent 5 wood and still came up 10 yds short of the green. I was pretty happy I could still play at 7000yds and ended up with a 76. I think I will play back there again, especially on light wind days. My pards all shot over 90 but enjoyed their round and I enjoyed their company!

I have joint issues (not arthritis but I'm 22 and on my way to it) and stretching, using a foam roller, and taking Glucosamine chondroitin pills have helped a lot

Played Monday morning @ Cane Gdn.
Not sure what happened but thought I played lousy but 41-42.
Missed 3 relatively easy birdies but got one in the front that was memorable.
Hit a drive long into a fareway bunker in right side. Bunker maybe 7' deep, 110 yards out and had to go over a greenside bunker, oh boy.
Took a PW hit it as hard as I could. No way to C the green but when we got there I had A 10' footer for bird and I drained it.
    Strange game [emoji41]

I'm out visiting family and couldn't bring my own clubs, first drive went dead straight, topped the next shot, and it just got worse from there. Shot a 54 (9 holes) which is 6-8 shots worse than I've done in several months.

I do the exercises I was told to do when I was younger. Unfortunately I was doing strongman for years and I think that I built everything up so much for the heavy weight that stopping doing that to do more cardio is a part of my problem.

My wife likes tools too.    We were talking last night how every day feels like a Holiday.  I could play golf five days a week if my body could stand it.  Once you start having multiple aches and pains what you want to do and are able to do is a different story.  I do play three days per week on average.

Played 2 rounds over he weekend. The Saturday round was a fun game. We did what we call a 3x6. 3 formats, 6 holes each. First 6 was better ball. Second 6 was captains choice, and third 6 was modified alternate shot. We shot 72, finished in 4th place in our flight. Neither one of us played great, but we played ok.

The Sunday round was another interclub match. I shot 36-42 for a 78. We pulled up to the 12th tee box and the group in front of us was sitting in their carts waiting. We waited about 15 minutes, and my back went stiff and I couldn't get loose again, so I struggled with flipping everything to the right with some nasty hooks. We tied the match 3-3.

However there was a really bright spot on the round. It happened on our 8th hole, 190 yards, over a bunker so it was all carry, my partner already knocked it to 8 feet and we were highfiving because it's a really hard shot. I pulled my 6 iron, which is not enough club unless I absolutely stole it flush with a little extra, but the 5 iron will fly the green. There is only about 20 feet between the edge of a deep bunker and the flag and the green slopes away and right to left. So it has to be a perfect shot to get close. Well, I hit he best 6 iron of my life, it landed softly, and was on line, so I bent over to pick up my tee, figuring I would have a kick in birdie, and was headed back to the cart when one of the guys on the other team said it's still rolling, very slowly, so I looked back up at it to see the last few inches of roll before the yellow and black soccer ball disappeared. That's right my very first ACE. It was so cool watching it slowly roll into the hole. me and my golf temamate woke the neighborhood with the hootin and hollerin, screaming and excitement. It was so unbelievable.

So, add me to the "HOLE IN ONE" club. 8-20-17.

Unfortunately, I don't have the computer skills required to take and post pictures of the course I routinely play, the River Marsh in Cambridge, Maryland.  It has some rather picture holes along the Choptank River.    But I do love this thread, because it reminds me how fortunate we are to have many of the venues with which we can play and how beautiful they are.   A baseball diamond is a baseball diamond, a football field is a football field and a tennis court is a tennis court, but a golf course is not just a golf course, its a venture through nature and many times its beauty.   Also, I find it fortunate that I can play in my home state of Virginia and my current residence of Maryland because I have access to both mountain and seaside golf.
