  1. Many-many years ago, I remember watching a TV segment with Freddie Couples talking about this exact same thing. He had just made a hole-in-one that day during a tournament so they asked him his opinion. He responded by going back to the hole & hitting a bunch of shots to see what it took to do it again. He couldn't. He felt that while you improve your chances the better you are at hitting the green, it's still luck that it goes in the hole.

Loved the reviews here, well done guys! I see the SM8's are on sale right now hahaha might have to get those but great info and knowledge from all the testers. I tried the fitting tool for the Vokeys so I have an idea what I might need in the future.

A local golf store even has the SM9s discounted! They're all really good wedges. But if we are to believe the videos with the Titleist designers & product mgrs, Vokey has made some impressive changes to the SM10s. I currently play SM9s and I really like them, so I'm really anxious to see whether the SM10s help my few remaining wedge issues.

  3. Don't downplay the 8i bump & run, I've used that for 30 years & love it! I completely agree with @tony@CIC. A fitting will probably cost a bit, but it can pay huge dividends. If you do just use on-line fitting tools, try to be as objective as you can. I'm in the middle of doing the Vokey SM10 wedge test and found a substantial difference between the on line recommendation & what my fitter recommended. (See my link below for the test to date.) In retrospect, I could have gotten closer online if I was a bit more objective about myself, but still not to the fitter's level.

Another resource to use is MGS Most Wanted tests. Țhey can help answer a lot of questions. Here's last year's test. https://mygolfspy.com/buyers-guides/golf-wedges/best-golf-wedges/

    Good luck!

  4. I tried skimming through the thread, but I wasn't able to find an answer to my question. Can anyone comment on your experience using the Mevo model with partial wedge shots, say from 50 to 100 yards? I'm doing the Vokey SM10 wedge test and bought a Mevo to help with my SM9 vs. SM10 comparison. But I can't seem to get anything close to the spin numbers my Titleist fitter got on his Trackman.  I don't expect them to be the same, but my Mevo is in the couple thousand range while Trackman is in the 7,000 to 9,000 range. I'm hoping I need to do something special in the set-up to get them closer.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks!!

  5. I've used mid-sized grip for years. For me, they just feel better and helps me avoid a death-grip. It might be a good exercise for you to put one on a favorite full swing club rather than your wedges, though, since we often hold them differently anyway. Either way, you can try it out for a bit before committing to the entire set.

They shipped!! Estimated arrival 6/5 😜

So I tried a K grind at my fitting and my fitter said it was basically THE bunker wedge. I hit multiple shots with it and loved how the ball just popped up out of the bunker. You don't even have to open the face at all. Their is so much bounce it just does it for you.

Whoo-hoo!!! I know it'll be at least a couple of weeks for mine, and with my luck they'll arrive while I'm out-of-town at my granddaughter's softball tournament in Kansas later this month. But I am very anxious to see what you think!

Check out my fitting results. Its interesting to see how different it was compared to the wedge selector.

Terrific fitting write-up! My only fitting regret was the fact that the course where the fitting was held got hit with a lot of rain the previous night which left the bunkers still too wet to get meaningful data, IMHO. But considering that both the final recommended bounce and grind will aid getting through the sand, vs. my gamer, I'm anxious to give it a try.

UGH. Second round with V5 and I estimate it missed more than 50% of shots. Had the V2 for 7 years for this same reason after the V3 would miss 5-10 per round and similar reviews about missed shots on the X5. Even when detecting the sensors for the first time I had to hold them extremely close to the watch and usually behind the face. When I first tried the V5 I used my existing V2 sensors and it picked them up much further away from the watch during detect process.

So frustrating, I guess I need to take 2 practice swings or hold the club in left hand for extended period as it picked up most short game shots where I usually take 2 practice swings to feel for turf interaction.

I'm the 1st to admit that Shot Scope probably used early adopters as defacto beta testers, but other than it taking an inordinately long time to find a course the 1st time, my X5 has been working flawlessly all this year. It might be helpful to do a hard reset or even a factory reset to see if that clears things up. Sorry, I didn't read back pages so maybe you've already tried this. If not, give it a try.

All the talk of fitting and seeing the difference has got me very excited to get fit. The last time I was fit was at a big box store and not sure how much the guy really knew. The fitter I'm going to is well respected and fits all the big dogs around here. Ill keep you posted on how it works out and if it differs from my wedge selector.

I'm really curious about your fitting! I'm showing my ignorance about your climate and golf season here, but it seems like indoor fittings would be pretty routine there making them an even higher caliber fitting than other areas?? I'm wondering whether you see a difference between them.

Great question! Each fitter is unique for sure. Chris used it in conjunction with his observations, after each shot the tool would update with a “suggestion” (without getting too much in the weeds it’s an algorithm according to Chris) which would change or stay the same after each shot. If Chris saw something or thought of something he would adjust the specs given and we would try another configuration. So to answer your question: yes, the suggested wedge specs I ended up in did change from the initial setup. Chris even took the time to explain the why behind what he & the software suggested. we went through about 5 total configurations.

Did you have a comparable amount of changes or was your fitter pretty spot on with his suggestions each time?

Interesting! Yes, my guy, Andrew, did make several changes from his initial suggestions based on more observation/Trackman data. Shaft length increased and lie changed up +2. We stuck with the grind and bounce suggestions, though, but that was based on watching the initial shots with my gamer. My swing speed is solidly in the mid-slow range (geez, I hate getting old!!!) and he felt the stock shaft would work well, and they did.

Actually, from what Andrew said and from previous articles I've read, Titleist puts all of their suppliers (anything they don't mfg themselves) through rigorous, some say torturous, testing and inspections. So he's of the opinion that much of their "stock" offerings would work well for most people, and he saw nothing in my swing that warranted a different shaft.

  11. @HeathS16 @snoopy79 You both mention that your fitter utilized the Titleist Wedge fitting tool in conjunction with Trackman. I double checked with my fitter and he did not, saying that he only uses it for indoor fittings as he prefers to just analyze divot patterns and Trackman data. Do you know whether there was a difference between what the Wedge Fitting tool initially selected for you and what the final wedge selections became? @Chubbs1991, I'd like to know the same for you once your fitting is completed.

    Thanks!!

  12. 5/28/2024 Update:

After a few more rounds, there's no doubt that the RXS is not as long off the driver as my gamers (-ProV1 X & MaxFli Tour X), but the performance into the green is every bit as good. Since a few people have mentioned concerns with spin and stopping on the green, I thought I'd share two specific examples.

First is a 187-yard 6 iron from an elevated tee. It backed up the length of the putter grip.

    6iShot.png.0555c72dd1e7d9b9556a9bd99e95971f.png

Next is a sand wedge from 105 yards that backed up a couple of feet.

Full disclosure, the greens were pretty soft because of rain the previous 24 hours, but the balls definitely perform well into the green.

Here's my entire review to date:

Just a quick update to those following along on this thread. It took about a week for the Titleist order to flip from received to processing. The ship date is now set to 6/4. Not sure how long it normally takes, but at least there is some movement.

Would love to get these in hand by Father's Day weekend so I can put them into play on the course. Obligations between now and then will probably confine me to a couple range visits before I get out again.

Thanks for the heads-up, snoop! I don't have the "received" status yet so I'm looking at a few weeks at best.

  14. Well... I think that reading through all of the previous comments answers the basic question I have of this thread's participants, but I'll ask anyway.

With the obvious and vast improvements in graphite shafts over the years, to the point where they provide lower torque and greater accuracy than that of steel, does graphite still provide significant reduction in hand and joint stress? I'm not talking about the shaft performance; that part has been and continues to be a matter of record. I'm talking about its benefit for hand & joint trauma.

I'm not far away from looking into new 6 thru W irons and I have enough joint problems that I'll spend the extra money if they can prolong my playing days. It's just that, in my addled mind, if graphite is more accurate than steel, that means graphite is more ridged than steel??? So does graphite still significantly reduce vibration transmitted to the hands??? This being a MGS forum thread (you know, being datacratic and all), does anyone know of a test demonstrating vibration reduction in modern graphite vs. steel? I wouldn't know where to start otherwise I give it a try.

Nice fitting info. Glad you had a great time and fitting.

I picked up the SM9's in the Jet Black. My first non-wood in a black finish. It's very striking! I can't wait to paint fill some of it. 🙂 I'll be curious, as most are to how the finish holds up over the next couple of years.

I was tempted! I think if I hadn't seen my fitter's entire bag in ALL black including the shafts and grips, I would have. But the shaft color alone is $35 each. FWIW, my fitter says that he has experience with the black finish and it holds up very well. Let us know what you see.
