Here's what I could find on the XP 85 shaft. Granted it's not the true spec sheet, but I couldn't find it on the True Temper website so I pulled the information from Golf Galaxy. Screenshot_20190921-174727_Firefox.jpeg
Really, it's a great shaft and works well for my swing, but I know that just one shaft option can be a problem for us here at MyGolfSpy.

Sent from my SM-N975U using MyGolfSpy mobile app

Interesting that it's considered medium spin. I would have thought it would be more in the vein of the KBS Tour 90s, which (I'm pretty sure) are classified as high launch/high spin.

Thanks for the info. I think these clubs are definitely targeted at more beginning golfers. That's not to say better players can't play them, but, as you said, a sole shaft choice is a tough sell here on MGS . 😀

  2. Finally got a chance to catch up on this thread. Looks like they hold up their end of the distance bargain.

@sirchunksalot, I agree a custom shaft option could be a great move. From what I can tell, the XP 85 is a "made for" shaft. Did anyone find the specs on it? I wonder what another high launch shaft with a slightly heavier weight would do for me.

Of all of the more affordable iron sets out there, this one is gorgeous in my opinion. I could totally see these in my bag.

  3. Attending a demo day event next Friday for some Mizuno irons. It's a public fitting event, but they had private, 1-on-1 fittings available so I snatched up a spot.

I'm most interested in getting on the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer and seeing what it has to say. I've been disappointed in the KBS Tour 90s as of late - I'll feel like I absolutely pure a shot only to watch it balloon up and fall short of where I'd expect it to land. When I demo'ed the Sub 70 639s, they had the regular stiff KBS Tours and I didn't experience the ballooning, and in fact hit the ball about the same distance with better trajectory despite weaker lofts.

I'm definitely in the market for new irons this offseason, but at the price, the Mizunos would have to really wow me. I'm likely to take the shaft recommendations and toy with some components from Maltby/Golfworks or look for a nice used set fitting my specs.

  4. Another good half bucket at lunch, split between 7/9/54 and driver. Really trying to focus on staying tension free, and that helped work some of the kinks out of my driver swing. I saw two driver swings hit 108 MPH on my Swing Caddie, which ties my personal best reading since I've gotten the SC200.

I'm also beginning to write down what feels are working at the moment, as this is the best I've swung my irons all year. The inevitable end of the season is coming soon, so I want something to reference for when I only get to hit balls off mats once every other week or so through the winter.

I bought Monte Scheinblum's "Efficient Swing" series a few weeks ago when he was running a special for $37. He's not in vogue like GG is, but I find his teachings really resonate well with me. I had purchased his "Drive for Dough" series a while back as well, but this new purchase is really focused on building a swing from the ground up. For me, I focus on the takeaway, pressure shift and backswing and then can just let my body do the rest. As I said, I'm hitting my irons better than I have all year, so it must be working.

Also, what's with the 265 yd par 3??? Haha I thought there was some sort of mistake with the tee box at first

The card lists it as a 3/4. I consider it a par 4. From the front tees it's definitely par 3, but from the back it's tough.

Doesn't really matter for handicapping purposes since that's based on rating and slope, but when I post my scores my +/- is always based on this being a par 4. 🤣

Got to play @edingc's home course, Western Greens, hauled booty out of work and got in 18! Solid course, especially on the cheap.

    47, 42: 89.

    36% FIR, 39% GIR, 38 putts.

Front 9 was pretty shaky. Most of it boiled down to just not being comfortable with the new putter (more to come soon 😏), but had 4 holes where I 3-putted. Bunch of absolute bunnies I just whiffed. Settled in on the back, especially with the putter. Only had 17 putts on the back.

Ball striking felt really good. Felt like I was actually seeing the improvements from the range translate over to the course which was great.

I feel like I'm primed for a good round, hopefully I'll be reporting back here soon with confetti and balloons!

Bet it was in great shape today, dried out a bit from the rain last week.

Glad you got a chance to play. Not the nicest course around us, but a decent value considering. Greens play tough, there's a ton of subtle undulations from over the years that are tricky. I still have at least one putt a round that doesn't do anything like I'd expect.

  7. Great half bucket, chipping and pitching lunch session today.

How in the world do you get to the point where you are controlling the hands but not being tense while doing so? Tension is the death of my swing, and it took me about 15 balls before I was able to just relax and let the swing happen.

Tense 9 iron - 130ish yards, high 70s swing speed, thin contact, sawed off/out of balance finish, high weak fading ball flight.

Tension-Free 9 Iron - 145 yards, mid 80s swing speed, flushed contact, balanced follow though, penetrating straight/slight draw ball flight.

This is a cyclical struggle for me. Just can't convince my brain that I will get the club in the right place without putting a bunch of tension in my wrists, forearms and shoulders.

  8. - 44/43 = 87 (+15)

    - 8/15 FIR

    - 4/18 GIR (1 birdie)

    - 35 Putts (2 3-putts, 13 2-putts, 3 1-putts)

Driver was miserable this morning, but today's blow up hole was a triple bogey on a par 3 thanks to blading one out of the greenside bunker over the green and behind a tree.

Had one "perfect" hole, No. 10. 255-yard driver in the middle, wedge to five feet, center cup on a rather slippery little putt.

Trying to believe Rotella in that holes like that are not just anomalies but rather a golfers true potential. Hit some great shots again this morning, especially with irons and wedges, but I just can't get things to be consistent. One round I'll drive the ball well (like last weekend) and cost myself shots with a poor short game, and then this weekend I drive the ball terribly but excel with my wedges.

  9. - 46 (+10) / 45 ESC

    - 1/7 FIR

    - 1/9 GIR

    - 16 Putts (1 3-putt, 5 2-putts, 3 1-putts)

Played some of my best golf of the year for the first three holes and then the wheels kind of fell off.

Blow-up hole came on No. 4. A 10-some (not kidding...) let me play through and I promptly topped my 3 wood into the weeds. Kind of rattled me a bit and ended up really struggling with my swing for the rest of the round. Shame. As I said above, the first three holes were some of my best golf of the year.

Ended up hitting two long par putts to save the round somewhat on No. 8 and No. 9.

Remove the blow-up hole and I'd be totally OK with the round.

  10. Good reads throughout this thread.

Currently go 44/48/54/60, with the 44 and 48 being the C300s and the rest being actual wedges. If I could do it again, I would choose 52/56 for the wedges. Maybe include a 60 since I do like it from greenside sand.

It is nice having only two wedge choices around the green. And really, most everything is done with the 54, from full shots to chips. The 60 is used from the sand or if I really need a short and high pitch or chip.

Lots of things to keep in mind as I embark on replacing my irons this offseason. It will definitely necessitate a revisit to my wedge game.

Played the same kind of golf on the front - bunt one 260 down the fairway, chippy knockdown to 20-30, 2-putt, go to the next hole.

    #GolfGoals.

In all seriousness, I hope the wrist gets better soon. I can't imagine not being able to play the level of golf to which you're accustomed.

A long , long par 4, hit a solid drive but still had 190. Hit a nice Hybrid to front green edge that got me to a par. A par on that hole is like a birdie really.

My course has one of those par 4s. Listed as 428 yards, dogleg left that begins 225 out from the tee box. The hole turns left but the fairway slopes down and right, and the green is massively uphill from the fairway

Best bet is to carry it 225+ straight, hit the top of the hill marking the dogleg in the left rough and let to release down to the middle of the fairway. I've hit a few 250 yard drives on this hole this year and have never had less than a 5-iron into the green. Bogey is a good score for most, and the one birdie I have had all season felt like an eagle!

How are you cleaning and storing the clubs?   dunking/soaking them in water or storing in heat?

Stored in conditioned space (they don't spend time in the trunk except to from range/course) and no soaking. Hand wiping only. That's the thing that gets me.

This set has no mat play, and I actually stopped using the 5-iron at the range in May because the badge looked to be loose. I clamped it for a few days and it held until now.

I'm sure it will happen again. It's a shame because they are otherwise very nice irons.

Well, I jinxed it. I flushed a 5-iron from the fairway during my Saturday evening round and felt the badge give away. Ball still traveled nicely (almost 200 yards), but the badge went flying somewhere in the rough. I couldn't find it.

I started a warranty claim with Wilson this morning, letting them know my displeasure that this is now the THIRD 5-iron with this exact same problem in eight months. We'll see what they say. I'm not getting my hopes up. Had I paid full retail price for these, I would be absolutely steaming.

  15. Spent a very productive lunch hour in the short game area today. Worked mostly on two things - high soft pitches with Utley's technique and then a bunch of 1/4-1/2 normal wedge swings focusing on setup, takeaway and pressure shift.

(All of this pitching practice paid off yesterday. I stuck a high, soft wedge from 70-ish yards out in thick rough to three feet. Only birdie of the day.)

I mentioned in my last few “How’d you play?” posts that I’ve added more secondary axis tilt at address. This has helped me tremendously because it helps shallow out my swing and gives my arms more room to swing around my body instead of over it. I shot "smooth" scores of 82 and 80 over the weekend after a poor 91 two weekends ago, and I feel like the tilt made all of the difference.

My right shoulder naturally falls down and inward, and it has been made worse with using a computer mouse for the past decade. This caused me a lot of grief the past few weeks because, as they say, “feel isn’t real.”

This picture is from my range session last Friday, when I had an awful time all-around. It’s a 7-iron. Notice how my spine is straight up and down at address. To me, this felt like I had plenty of secondary tilt as my right shoulder dropped down and in.

    snapshot_20190909_165849.thumb.jpg.e10898ff87b2123a4fef730a02af20d5.jpg

I’m now consciously evaluating tilt at address and it is working wonders. Combined today with a focus on good pressure and hip movement in the backswing, I flew a bunch of 1/2 wedges within a yard of my target. Great feeling.

A lot of my issues really can be traced back to poor setup, so I need to ingrain all of these checks into my routine. Setup, grip and alignment are the easiest things to change in my swing since I actually have full control over them!

  16. - 80 (+8)

    - 4/15 FIR

    - 8/18 GIR (1 birdie)

    - 34 Putts (2 3-putts, 12 2-putts, 4 1-putts)

    - 3:00 Round Time

Back at my home course this morning and had another great round for me. Sadly my putting kind of fell off on the last four holes, with the three-putts coming on 15 and 18 and costing me my second-ever sub-80 round. It's OK - the course gave me two very generous bounces today in my favor that saved me at least three strokes.

Didn't find as many fairways but wasn't far off them. Need to post an update in the Epic Flash thread because it's been money for me with my "rediscovered" driver swing.

You can draw some comparisons by doing some OEM fittings or the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer.  It would be best if you could figure out headweights for each clubhead so you are close to how the shaft will react during the swing.

@ncwoz - This is my plan for when I'm ready to pull the trigger. Debating between DBM, TE Forged, PTM Chrome or PTM Black. Still leaning toward PTM Chrome or the TE Forged since they can be bent for loft/lie more easily.

I think Maple Hill has the Mizuno Shaft Optimizer, not 100 percent positive though. I'd have to call over there. And not sure if they would charge you a full fitting fee to hit it a few times. I'm still waiting for their free putter fitting promotion to be over at the end of September. They should shift over to their "Buy a Fitting, Get the Fitting Fee Back on a Giftcard" promotion starting in October if they continue the schedule they've done in the past.

I've read mixed feelings on the ISO-T, some people seem to love it and other don't get along with it. Have you hit a current season driver like the Cobra F9? Once next year's crop of drivers come out, I would expect you will be able to find brand new F9s and/or other current model drivers in the sub-$300 range on eBay. By the time you add a shaft and grip to the ISO-T you're looking at more than $200 anyway.

How are you getting along with that Mizzy 3-wood?  I've had my eye on that one for some time and would be interested to know if your thoughts.

    Thanks in advance!

For the price I paid ($70 brand new in plastic), I'm extremely happy with it. Seems to be pretty forgiving off the tee. I have not tried it off the deck. It gets used for two specific tee shots on my home course. The Tensei White seems to suit my swing well.

I did just get it a few weeks ago, so I don't have much to offer on long-term outlook. It's not a club that I use a lot at the moment. Sorry I can't add more!

Pretty nice stuff---- Wilson has always been a good company and back in the day their QC was second to none---- Believe it or not something like the badges coming off can affect the playability due to slight swing weight changes. I know some guys have had issues when they de badged some Callaway irons. A friend of mine on WRX actually de badged some Cally irons and is  pretty meticulous like I am. He came up with almost 2 grams on the badges and glue. Some players are more sensitive to small changes in feel and SW. So I know exactly where you are coming from. Diamond Tour I have done business with those guys for years and their customer service is second to none. We did business with them back when we had the golf shop and they were just getting started. Maltby----- I describe Ralph Maltby as sheer genius and they make some great products----- I actually was going to build me a set of the forged CB irons and I ended up on a couple of trade deals with the KZG irons and got on that wagon instead. Looks like you chose equipment well as far as quality and customer service

Yes, Jason over at Diamond Tour is the epitome of perfect customer service. I can't recommend Diamond Tour/Hurricane Golf/Sub 70 enough because of that.

Back to the basics today. After shooting 79 two weeks ago, I've had a couple awful rounds spraying the ball all over the place.

Worked on my takeaway and getting the shaft at a better position at P2. Drills courtesy Monte Scheinblum's Efficient Swing series.

    snapshot_20190904_123953.thumb.jpg.07079a46c014241dcfa7a73f14e54551.jpg

Quoting my own post, but very happy to report day two of back to basics was a huge success. Started with small takeaway only swings in the pitching area like my posted picture, but then grabbed half a basket and headed to the range.

This summer I've been going back and forth between hitting the ball great and then suddenly losing a club or more of distance (and way less club head speed based on my Swing Caddie). I am now certain my takeaway getting sloppy was the problem. Focused on getting a good takeaway and I added a good 10-15 yards to my irons and wedges. I was happy to see my 7 iron work up to the low 90s. That's a great sign that I'm doing things well in the takeaway.

I'm running out of practice time before the range closes for the year, but together with the takeaway, I also need to focus on getting more consistent pressure shifts in the swing. Every few swings I get it right, but if I want to strike the ball better consistently that's an area of focus for me going forward.
