  1. Golfworks makes quality heads. My son just started playing. After spending too much time (and money) on eBay figuring out which irons for me, I had him work with a fitter to find the right shaft. The Mizuno shaft optimizer was very helpful if you have access. The KE4 tours with DG120 has been great for him and doesn’t break the bank

  2. If you can get past the look, I found the Ping G15 to be almost stupid easy to hit. Very forgiving. Now if you can get even a rudimentary fitting to know lie angle and what shaft tends to work for you, that will go long way to getting consistent with the irons. I had a set of Golfworks KE4 irons made for my son by his instructor. He had him swing the Mizuno shaft optimizer. That got us a shaft and lie angle. My son is a new golfer, and when he got these, his iron game jumped. Almost made a hole in one with his first time out. Hard to beat at around $400

  3. For me, growing up less well off than I am now, I struggled with being, let’s say the word, cheap. Have learned over time to pay more for specific things that I valued
    1) Quality. Have a number of component clubs that I moved on from because they were cheaply made. Would have saved money paying more and getting a used set from a well made brand (which is my Ping G15s).

    2) Memories. Just got back from Pinehurst and decided to buy a putter cover to remember an awesome trip

    3) Support good cause. I get value from MGS and few other channels.

    4) Expertise. I’m looking for new irons. Developed a great relationship with small golf shop and will be buying from him, because he knows clubs and know how I swing

    5) Family and friends  I did get my father in-law shirt and from Pinehurst  But was able to find it on sale because he is a small  Hey, didn’t say I was totally cured 😉

  4. If your son have a golf teacher or coach, he or she can give a good ball park of players or game improvement heads. Then looking at Mygolfspy most wanted list is a good place to start. If not, just have him swing a couple types in same brand family. That he liked the muscle back might mean he needs thinner soled irons

For shafts, look for a golf store that has the Mizuno shaft optimizer.  It is a gizmo they put on a  club and let your son swing. It will give a listing of 3-6 shafts that would work for him. My fitter found that it tends to give recommendations that go across brands.

If you are not very brand OEM conscious, consider something like Maltby or Sub70 as your son will outgrow the clubs in 3 years or less.

Good luck and have fun with him

On having the Epic Flash SZ: when I went for a driver fitting, my spin rate was so high that the fitter was throwing everything at it that he could to get that down. Unfortunately, the fitting (at a Callaway fitting day) was not done with a high-end LM, so it wasn't measuring AoA, but the spin rates I was seeing (upper 3,000s) were consistent with a negative AoA.

Did you check where you impact the face? I got high spin with very positive AoA (average was 4) because I would  strike low on face. After watching Monte’s Drive 4 Dough, saw his clip of lowering tee height influenced a more level and centered strike. Swing now around +1 degrees with much more centered strike

  6. After watching this video

I doubled down on the fade for driver. I tried to draw my driver when first getting out of beginner slice. Was relatively successful at first, but when started to speed up the swing, duck hooks were close by. The ball position being forward and teed up tends to cause the path go left, making the fade a simple thing with a squared up stance. I don’t think a fade goes shorter, because I can pivot faster and release more without worrying about closing down the face and hooking OB. YMMV
