Yeah some people can represent it in bad ways but it's used for Southern Pride as well and it shouldn't be looked at automatically with fear or with the wrong idea. I'm of the opinion that the only appropriate place for a confederate flag in 2014 is in a museum, with a civil war exhibit. This is not, NOT, a symbol of the racism. It is inspired by a TV show car. If it did not have the 01 and General Lee on an orange tone piece of leather, you may have an argument, However, those additions replicate the car in the TV Show, The Dukes of Hazard. A show, stupid show, but a show that never celebrated racism and if it degraded any "group" of people at all it was rednecks. I personally would prefer a picture of Cathrine Bach in the those shorts and tight top. This show was also in the 1970's. That flag at the time did not have the same racial insensitivity that it does now. Back then, I was just a kid, but at least here in Texas, that flag did not represent the same thing as it does now. Unfortunately, now, that flag has been used by some to become more of a symbol of racism or at least racial insensitivity. But this puttershoe mimics Bubba Watson's car. Personally, I never liked that flag on the General Lee, but that had more to do with Orange and Red clashing. Jondagcl
A position of privilege indeed to belong to a group where the flag does not offend you. I won't debate with anyone the flags merits, origins, or pop culture inclusions. Less will I debate Bubba Watsons car as proof positive that it is no longer a symbol of racism. It's not my putter or putter cover. But it was posted here for us to see and I shared my feelings.
RoverRick
I did not say that. A few weeks ago, this guy brought his 10 year old kid to the course wearing a Confederate Army hat. I asked about it, and he said it was an old Army hat, meaning he had no idea the significance of it. I said something to the dad about it. But he did not seem concerned. So a week later I said something to the mom about it. The hat has not returned. The difference, there was no TV show with that hat, other than The Rat Patrol. Sully wore one. I'm of the opinion that the only appropriate place for a confederate flag in 2014 is in a museum, with a civil war exhibit. The person who made this puttershoe asked me personally if I thought a general lee puttershoe would be racist and I told him absolutely not. 1) because I know where the reference comes from and 2) he isn't remotely racist or prejudice in anyway shape or form. RookieBlue7
The confederate flag isn't a racist symbol. Know why the Civil War was fought? It wasn't over slavery. It was over political views and rising tensions between the north and the south. 4 northern states still had slaves at the time the Civil War took place and never seceded from the Union. Ulysses S Grant has personal slaves. And they commonly associate the Klu Klux Klan with the stars and bars. The KKK flies the American flag and always has. It also wasn't formed originally as a group that hated other races. The original reason behind the Klan was to take care of women beaters, regardless of race. To me, the flag is in honor of southern heritage and my ancestors. But I won't even go that far. Anyone here in Georgia, where the Dukes of Hazzard was filmed and set will know immediately when they see the orange with the flag exactly what it's in reference to. And I didn't design this, I believe someone at Callaway did or it was created for one of their staffers (as the driver shoe has the hammer on it). Zach decided to do a limited release (and he has family here in Georgia). So I bought one, as a native Jawjan In The BagDriver: TaylorMade M2 (2017) w/ Project X T1100 HZRDUS Handcrafted 65x Strong 3 wood: Taylormade M1 15* w/ ProjectX T1100 HZRDUS handcrafted 75x3 Hybrid: Adams PRO 18* w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"4 Hybrid: Adams PRO 20* (bent to 21*) w/ KBS Tour Hybrid S flex tipped 1/2"4-AW: TaylorMade P770 w/ Dynamic Gold Tour Issue Black Onyx S400 SW: 56* Scratch Tour Dept(CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold SpinnerLW: 60* Scratch Tour Department (CC grooves) w/ Dynamic Gold SpinnerXW: 64* Cally XForged Vintage w/ DG X100 8 iron tiger steppedPutter: Nike Method Prototype 006 at 34"Have a ton of back-ups in all categories, but there are always 14 clubs in the bag that differ depending on the course and set-up. Jondagcl
In the big scheme of things this thread isn't all that significant. It's a putter shoe, that's it. It's got a controversial symbol on it – some people find it acceptable (most of the folks posting here do), some don't (me). I'll spare you the history lesson and the counter arguments to posts above. Providing people history lessons on the internet, while perhaps well intentioned, comes across as condescending. It assumes I do not know how to use google, or like in my case, that I haven't been teaching US History for the past decade. I enjoy reading opinions and sharing thoughts and ideas. But I'm not much for argument, or debates that I know won't convince anyone to change any of their ideas. So why post this if I am not trying to convince anyone of anything, who cares then. Probably very few people – this is mostly a selfish post on my end. It's for me to say thanks for affording me the fun time I've been able to have on this site for a pretty long time, and explain why I won't be back. Even when folks disagree with a member (like me) no one really piled on or attacked, I appreciate that. The conversation was civil the entire time. That type of dialogue is almost non-existent on the internet. This particular thread though left a bad taste in my mouth. You are probably thinking it's the history lesson that rubbed me the wrong way, or the explanations for why I have interpreted the symbol incorrectly. Nope, that wasn't it. You'll notice that for a good bit of time there Rookie had the last word. It's his thread, figured what the heck. Say what you want. Here is what did it, a couple of additional members then posted (as it's well within there right to) and expressed their admiration of the putter shoe. Nuanced details being what they are, in my brain we are now expressing support for the symbol on it – not the fine quality of the stitching. We've been talking a lot about how to grow the game and be more welcoming – golf hasn't lost a player, but the message board has. I'll leave you with a fact about how this symbol makes me feel – not welcome. It's a powerful symbol, and there is one thing we can't debate and that's how it makes me feel. The fact a symbol I personally have such a hard time with has been so strongly well received on here caught me off guard. And that's ok, I'm allowed to be caught off guard. Happens with lots of my shots on the golf course! Take care gentleman.
hckymeyer
I've started typing and ended up deleting my response at least 5 times to this post. In the end I'm going to just keep it simple. Jondagcl - I respect your opinion and it is your right to choose where you spend your time on the internet. I'm sure I'm not alone when I ask you to reconsider leaving the site over something like this though. This is just my opinion, but it seems kind of silly to leave a forum and never come back over a thread about people liking a puttershoe representing an iconic 80's TV show. And in the end that is what this represents, nothing more, nothing less. FWIW I did spent the last hour googling this history of that flag. From what I found it's origins don't mean anything bad. Anyway, this thread really took a left turn and I hope you'll reconsider. Driver: SLDR w/ Fujikura Ventus Black 3w: '16 M2 hl w/ Diamana D+ 82 5w: Launcher HB w/ HZRDUS Yellow Hybrid: 22 deg. Anyway, this thread really took a left turn and I hope you'll reconsider. That is correct as this was the 2nd Flag of the Confederate States of America and as often referred to as the stars and bars which is incorrect.....the stars and bars was the name of the first flag of the confederacy that resembles the American flag. The civil war was fought of a lot of reasons and ending slavery was really not in the top 5 of those reasons (although a great product of the conflict). Most of the causes and basis for the American Civil War were in relation to economics and balance of wealth (ie. tax base) and the issues of states rights. RookieBlue7
If you want to get technical, that's not an official national confederate flag. That's technically the battle flag of Tennessee, which is a spin on the battle flag of Virginia. The St. Andrew's Cross on a rectangular flag with no border, though, is state specific and eventually became the confederate navy jack.
