Where's Stu??

Also I think Bones dabbles in old clubs but can't remember if it was hickory or just persimmon.

I found a course not far from me that rents them, and the course was designed for it. Might give it a try this summer.

Onion Creek (Demaret's club) used to host the hickory tour when they came through Austin. I went out and watched them play one year. Certainly an interesting group to observe; like taking the time machine back 100 years. I was led to believe running with the Society of Hickory Golfers is akin to Porsche club racing. In other words, recommended for those with a rarified leisure hobby fund. I don't know if it's still the case but Sandy Lyle apparently used to regularly whoop up on the whole lot of them.

Definitely won't be joining their club. But a course down the street is short enough to enjoy a Sunday round like Doc Brown. 88mph

And thanks for the link!

Watch out for Biff

  • 9 months later...

When the snow melts and the grass becomes a thing again... I will be hitting the course with a bag of these.  Been wanting to do it for a while now, have a few clubs on the way.  Won’t be able to do much with them this year, but I’m going to take them to the simulator and see what kind of action I get.

6 clubs to start, and if I like it I will be going all hickory and <50 compression balls.  Should be fun, revive my interest in the game, I like history, and golf... might as well combine them.

I’ll keep you all up to speed.

My brother plays in hickory tournaments all the time. I posted a thread about him playing Shinnecock Hills right after the US Open with hickory clubs. Too lazy to search it out at the moment.

How did I miss this thread? Shankster, you seem like the type of guy that would play hickory.

I talked to a guy in the area that plays hickory and we talked of meeting up but it never happened. I’m getting my fill of persimmon though. Haven’t picked up a metal wood in 3-4 months.

Like to hear how you like it once you start playing.

I read it a few times. It’s what sparked my interest again.

Plus I’ve been messing around with my old Kroydon 2 iron, and from the research I’ve done it appears it was originally a hickory shafted club, but retrofitted with a steel shaft. Craftsmanship is amazing.

Check out The Society of Hickory Golfers (hickorygolfers.com). They have tournaments in the US as well as overseas. Also have regional playing groups where you can try out clubs and see if hickory for you. I've played hickories for almost 15 years - its a lot of fun.

Just an older guy with 8 or 9 clubs and a MacKenzie Walker bag.

Will do! I found a Michigan based playing group, but I am not sure how much I’ll be able to play. Really far from me.

My Mashie Nib 45° and Niblick 50° are set for Friday delivery.

Hopefully I’ll get to take them to the course before they close up.

The guy that runs the place says he’s been keeping the place open for me and 3 other guys.

Not much golf traffic in sub 45° temps.

Been leaving range buckets out for me for after work.

Hopefully the real crap holds off for at least a week, and it gets too soggy for anything.

Ah man. I believe those are called Pyratone shafts. Probably from the late 20’s, early 30’s then.
