Taylormade Speedblade iron shaft recommendations

Recommended Posts

Currently playing with TM Speedblade irons with the 85G S TM shafts in them. Picked em up used cheap 1.5 years ago and seem to fit me ok and I hit them overall pretty good. No real complaints but this may be a perfect case of a little knowledge can hurt you. Read/watched reviews and overall good for what these irons represent but most say opt for the upgraded shaft if you have a choice. Could I be missing out on anything? I’m not opposed too tinkering at a reasonable price. Could maybe justify the $75-140 prices I see for pulled sets if they would actually change something for the better. What would you guys recommend to try in these higher launching jacked up lofted clubs. I carry the 8 iron 150 yards very comfortably ending up closer to 160. Swing speed with my driver is 95mph+ and tempo/transition pretty medium so stiff still works well there. Bad shots for me are pull/hooks mostly caused by too strong a grip I think. Only getting older and probably closer to a regular shaft than I think especially in irons but anytime I try em in simulators my crooked shots get really crooked.

So i bought some stiff stock speedblades used a few years ago. played ok. Went in to a club builder and he put me in XS FST 125 shafts. Took some getting used to and I probably could have played with them and been fine instead of getting new clubs this year (i couldn't stand the badge on the club heads. With that said, it wouldn't hurt to get retro-fitted into some shafts that suit your game more. He also told me, the stock stiff TM shafts were almost more like regular flex.

I would first want to test some "like" irons somewhere with comparable weighted/flexed steel shafts. Your speed blades are good irons to tinker with imo. The shafts I would try with speed blades (I hit them years ago) would be Project X Rifle in R+/115 gm. If I remember the steel shafted speed blades I hit got up in the air pretty easy. The Project X Rifle might be firm enough without being too heavy in "feel"  to balance the higher launch of the irons --- again, good iron design to tinker with regarding shafts.  Might also be pulled sets available online as its a popular iron shaft. Sure KBS and TT, Nippon have good offerings as well regarding steel shaft choices. Also Steel Fiber's in the I80/I95 models may be good as well but could be on the pricey side for what you are looking for. Good luck.
