What's your swingweight?

Recommended Posts

I hear people throw specs around like length, lie, loft, material, and flex when talking about their clubs. Rarely, if ever, do I hear anyone mention their club' swingweight.

Do you know your swingweight? Is swingweight something you look at when shopping for new clubs? Do you like a heavier or lighter club feel? Which of you is guilty of this:

Good question. Sw is so dependent on feel. I recently bumped my irons from d0 to d3-4 to match my driver. My 3H is d2 and my 4w is around d2-3. Wedges are like d4-d5.

I tend to like my clubs quite heavy both in SW and actual weight. I tinker a bit with lead tape, but I like to eventually tip weight it to put it back together cleanly.  Some of the SW I like is just the nature of +1/2 I play on everything.  I also like to play all of my wedges at 36" so the 58 gets a 3/4" bump.  The biggest oddity is probably how heavy I like my woods.  These are loose numbers since I'm working with the GolfWorks budget SW scale.

For stock clubs I could look at specs and see what they are supposed to be but that doesn’t mean that is what they are or if that is what I need.  For clubs with changed shafts, grips, shot tracking changes, etc I have no idea…. I guess I could measure but don’t have an interest or see why it matters.  I typically lean toward a lighter feeling club but that is probably total weight not swingweight.  People talk about feeling the clubhead in the swing and it isn’t something that I experienced when changing club specs.

people do talk about swingweight especially if you cut a putter or driver down.  I have cut my driver down and didn’t add any weight.  I have put lead tape on putters to change rotation not to influence swingweight.

I checked the swing weight of my clubs and I was a little surprised.  My current gamer irons are PXG Gen 3 0311 with TT Elevate 95 gram R shafts at - 1/4 inch.  The swing weights range from C7.5 in the 6 iron to C9.25 in the GW.  My second set of irons are PXG 0211 with MMT graphite 80 gram stiff shafts at +1/2 inch.  The swing weight for this set ranges from D0 in the 6 iron to D5 in the LW.  What is strange is I would have guessed the graphite 0211 set to be lighter than the steel 0311 set.  I bought a roll of a lead tape and I am going to start experimenting with adding some weight to the heads.  For a starting point, I am going to try D1 in the 6 iron and add a 1/2 SW per club through the LW.  As for my long clubs, my 3W and 5W have lighter swing weights than my driver.  Does it make sense to add some weight to these clubs?

I have attached a spreadsheet of each clubs swing weight.

I've been interested in swingweight with regards to my clubs but am always concerned about starting something new without an experienced person to hold my hand during the early process, if that makes sense.  I'm inconsistent enough that even though I feel there is room for optimization, it would just be another variable that I should probably avoid.

That being said, if I were to tinker with it, what would make a stroke feel "right?"

For Saturday's round of golf, I added 2 swingweight increments to my driver - 5W and 0311 irons.  Every club was noticeably heavier.  I hit them straight, with lower ball flight, and less yardage.  The driver felt very solid, but was 10 - 15 yards short; the 3W was frozen rope line drives, and the 5W was lower ball flight and shorter.  For the irons, I was dropping down a club to hit my yardages, and GIR was good.  The wedges felt very good with the additional weight.

For Sunday's round, I reduced the swingweight on the driver by one and moved the lead tape near the face and parallel to the face.  First 3 drives were 2 right in the rough and 1 left in the rough.  I moved the tape to the back of the club and hit the remainder of fairways.  For the 3W I reduced the swingweight by one and adjusted the loft from 13.5 to 14.5 and it was golden.  I removed the lead tape from the 5W.  I added 1/2 swingweight to my 3 hybrid and hit it very well (no misses to the left).  For the 0311 irons, I reduced the swingweights by 1 and tried to hit increments of 0.5 swingweight between clubs.  The irons felt good, dispersion was good, and maybe 1/2 club longer than on Saturday.

No changes for Monday's round.  I definitely like the feel of the clubs I added some weight to.  I find it very amazing the effect a small amount of weight makes on a clubhead and also where you place the weight.

ping anser putter B5 😯 i cut it down to 33" and i then added lots of weights and its still only B5!  😁.  I measured a stock length anser i have and it came in at C7.

I just picked up a Sub70 50* wedge that is 1" long and it is E0 !  I might be cutting that one down a little!

The difference between the two hybrids surprised me.

Putter weights!  😆

I suspected some might have some wide ranges in their bags but C5 to E0 is nuts! What club(s) are your most reliable? Any preferred weight?

The E0 wedge hasnt made it in the bag yet i am still experimenting with it.  I wont play it at E0 thats for sure.  I will need to cut it down at least 3/4" so that will bring it down.  Some other adjustments will be made to probably get to a D4 or 5.

The two hybrids were settled on after trial and error to find ones that didnt have the built in left miss.  I dont ever remember putting them on the sw scale, I just looked for a straight ball flight.

I prefer the feel of my irons at about D2 to D4.  I dont like them at or below D0.

I know what the manufacturers stated swingweights are but I don’t have it measured. I usually test clubs or get fit for them so if something feels too light or too heavy I don’t get along with it so don’t buy it. So whatever the supposed swingweights are is fine with me.

unless I’m ordering with Ping and I know they will meet a requested swing weight I don’t worry about what they are

I have been tweaking the E0 Sub 70 wedge (50*)over the last week, shortening it to a 35.5" length got the sw down to D3.  And it's now in the bag after some practice sessions with it handling the 85 to 105 yard shots.

I also added a little lead tape to the 18* hybrid toward the toe and its just a hair under C8 and still taking the flight path I want.
