Fellow spies: this is my first official test (though I’ve always been an equipment dabbler at heart) and I promise to give y’all my very best to capture what these irons look like, feel like and perform like. Feel free to ask any questions along the way…

No clue how the finish will hold up, but I’ll do before and after pics during the testing timeframe to give you some idea.

Knock that review out the park! I’m not to happy to be on the sidelines at the moment but I’ll be be watching. As for the steak dinner?  I’d settle for a box of Maxfli tour balls since we can’t get them in Canada!

When I provided my existing iron specs to Joshua at Haywood, I gave him the specs I was fitting into which are 2 degrees upright. I have not been fit yet, but will share what Joshua and team come back with based on those specs.

My existing irons are also much stronger lofted, so we’ll see.

I think as far as initial questions... how was the fitting process (is everyone getting fit)? Upon arrival, how was the packaging? Also check out manufacturing quality (any noticable defects in stamping, finish, painting, hosel fitting, shaft alignment, grip alignment, etc.).

 

I was last fitted a couple of years ago and due to the distance issues, I won't be getting fitted for these.

That has me wondering too, Ian from Club Champion (TXG) loved the smaller soles on the MBs but he's a little more skilled than me. It's going to be fun finding out how they interact with the turf.

As a follow up to these questions, As I have already said, I was unable to be fitted by Haywood, because I live on the other side of the Pacific Ocean and 20 hours into the future from Vancouver.

How ever Joshua sent us the following questions to answer...

Have you ever been fitted for golf clubs before?
IF yes, when and for what type of irons?
Do you have access to a launch monitor to test your own 7 iron to provide us with data?
How far do you currently carry your 7 iron? (not your best shot possible, but your average distance in both hot and cold conditions)
What model of irons are you using? (please be as specific as possible)
What shaft and flex are you using in your irons? (please include brand, model and flex)
What is your average ball flight with your irons? (low, mid, high)
Do you find your ball rolls out a lot or stops fairly quickly on the green with a 7 iron?
How tall are you? What is the length between your wrists to the floor?
What size Glove do you wear?

and my answers were...

I have been fitted for clubs a couple of times.
The last time was 2021 and it was for Titleist Irons
I may be able to but I will have to check
140 metres (153) in hot weather and 130 metres (142 yards) in the winter
I am using 2021 Titleist T100S Irons from 5 to 48 degree and a T200 4 iron.
True Temper AMT Tour White S300
Mid flight but tends towards High
From a good lie it stops fairly quickly
I am 178cm (5 foot 10) and 86.5cm (33.055 inches) from wrist to floor.
Finally, I wear XL gloves.

From these answers Josh was able to recommend the final set up for me (this is detailed in my intro).

I have to say that, when I was daydreaming and playing around with the build tools on the website, it was almost exactly the set I settled on. His choice of shaft was better than mine

Thank you, I would have included this in my intro but it was getting a bit long!!

The Titleist's are great but I just think the feel of the Haywood's could be even better.

Given that I was the alternate for the test, I'm a little behind everyone else at this point. But wanted to share the complete fitting process including the dates/times/specs/back and forth with Joshua Haywood (to this point) (as I know that @jbern, @Rob17452 and others have asked about remote fitting in the thread).

Given that I am in Texas, I had to do a fully remote fitting.

Thursday, March 7, 2024 4:48 PM- MGS connects me with Joshua Haywood via Email. He Emails me and congratulates me on being a tester. He also notes, "I am excited to work directly with you to ensure you get the best setup possible for your testing. Typically we would have fittings completed in house at our HQ, but given all of your different locations, we will have to work on virtual fittings." This makes total sense given I'm near San Antonio, Texas and Vancouver, BC Canada isn't an easy trip for a fitting. Maybe one day...especially if the Dallas Stars happen to be playing there. I digress...

Joshua sends me a questionnaire to get started and does offer "IF you have the ability to get fit locally, we can also discuss that as an option too. (please let me know)"

• IF yes, when and for what type of irons? I have Callaway Apex '19 forged irons with KBS $-TAPER LITE shafts S flex. Info on lofts/lies below
  • 4I 21 degree loft, 62 degree lie
  • 5I 23.5 degree loft 62.5 degree lie
  • 6I 26.5 degree loft 63 degree lie
  • 7I 30.5 degree loft 63.5 degree lie
  • 8I 34.5 degree loft 64 degree lie
  • 9I 38.5 degree loft 64.5 degree lie
  • PW 43 degree loft 65 degree lie
  • AW 48 degree loft 65 degree lie (I've taken this out of the bag for a 49 degree Edison 2.0 wedge with the same 65 degree lie)
• Do you have access to a launch monitor to test your own 7 iron to provide us with data? Yes. 7 iron session from Jan on my Rapsodo MLM2 Pro attached. It was cold, so I can do another session today and send that data as well. Arccos has my "Smart distance last 100 shots" at 160 yards.
• How far do you currently carry your 7 iron? (not your best shot possible, but your average distance in both hot and cold conditions) Arccos has my "Smart distance last 100 shots" at 160 yards. I'd feel comfortable with that number.
• What model of irons are you using? (please be as specific as possible) Callaway Apex '19 forged with the specs listed above.
• What shaft and flex are you using in your irons? (please include brand, model and flex)  KBS $-TAPER LITE shafts S flex.
• What is your average ball flight with your irons? (low, mid, high) Low to mid - I don't hit the highest ball, even with my Titleist Pro V1x Left Dash balls.
• Do you find your ball rolls out a lot or stops fairly quickly on the green with a 7 iron? Playing in Texas, it's completely dependent on the drought. If the greens are wet, I can stop the ball quickly (or even back it up a bit), but when it's dry like it's been for the past 18 months I have to walk back to the pitch mark (if it makes one). 
• How tall are you? What is the length between your wrists to the floor? I'm 5'9 with shoes on. Wrist to floor is 35 7/16". 
• What size Glove do you wear? Men's small

Saturday, March 9, 2024 10:07:53 PM - Joshua is working late on a Saturday...and I feel for him for that...but I'm not going to complain as he sends me his recommendations for the Haywood CB/MB irons as noted below. He leads off his EMail with a rather important/large caveat:

"If you could please review and where there is 2 selections, let us know which you prefer. Also, your lofts are significantly stronger in your current irons, so you should expect 8-10 yards differential distance wise with everything else being equal."

Whoa - 8-10 yards is a full club for me gapping wise. That means my current 7 iron will likely be a 6 iron in this Haywood set. THIS WILL BE TESTED!

We would recommend the following for you:

• 4-7CB/8-PW MB 
• Right Hand
• 1º Upright
• Dynamic Gold 105 – Stiff
• Standard length
• Haywood Standard Size Grip (logo up or down) OR Haywood 360 grip?

We look forward to hearing from you and confirming your set.

I truly appreciate your assistance with the fitting recommendations. The 4-7 CB/8-PW MB split sounds perfect and was exactly what I was thinking.

Right hand…check.

1 degree upright works.

Dynamic golf 105-stiff sounds great.

Standard length is what I play now, so perfect.

Haywood grip logo up works…I’m happy to give you a bit of branding on the grips.

Question though…given that the lofts on my irons are stronger, and you’re already adding the disclaimer about the 8-10 yards length difference, would it make sense to strengthen the lofts by the 2 degree option I saw on your site? If not, I understand and will happily take them at the standard lofts knowing what is a 7 iron in my set is likely a 6 iron for yours, but I was wondering the reasoning behind not making this recommendation. Especially since you are making the lie angle change on each.

"Regarding Loft, strengthen the lofts also changes the bounce (decreases it) so it can change the turf interaction a bit, depending if you are a sweeper or a digger it can be a potential benefit, or can have a decreased experience.

The recommendation wasn’t made because it isn’t necessary to do so unless you request it. We just wanted to inform you of the differentials if you are wanting to do a direct comparison distance wise. If you aren’t, then standard lofts would be very well suited as they were originally designed, but also easy to share in your review the loft differentials, hence the likely occurrence that distances will be less than your current irons.

Happy to accommodate whichever you feel is best for you, your testing and your game "

Great explanation Joshua and bounce hadn't crossed my mind. Given that "The recommendation wasn’t made because it isn’t necessary" then I'm all for getting them at the standard lofts. Between you and I, what the club is marked doesn't matter for distance aside from gapping throughout my bag, and if I have to be one club stronger "by number" it won't matter so long as I can hit my distance targets. If that means playing 4-9 instead of 5-P, I'll just pull the club I need to do so. I'll have a gapping session when they come in and dial in the distances. I'm looking for better dispersion anyway, not extra yardage.

SO...this is literally the inside baseball of what the virtual fitting has been like to date. Would Haywood customer reps be Emailing me on Saturdays and Sudays? Their Website has a form and a toll-free number, but I'm not sure they'd be working around the clock on a weekend like Joshua has for me. That said...kudos to you Joshua for doing so. You've kept my enthusiasm high, have answered all my questions even on the weekend when I wasn't expecting you to do so, and you've had great responses as to why you made the decisions you did. I appreciate the white-glove treatment.

Circling back on this one. I did wind up 1 degree upright per their recommendations. I’m 2 degrees upright in my current Callaway Apex ‘19s, but looking at Haywood’s specs, their 1 degree loft adjustment will put within 0.5 degrees of my gamers.

Thanks for sharing all the details! Unreal response time from Joshua (and you) and on a weekend! 

It's always good to bring up the bounce/loft relationship when adjusting loft settings!

The bounce angle question is a very interesting one and it's not something I took into account when I agreed to going two degrees stronger. Joshua had suggested it with no hesitation, so he obvious thought that the benefit of the extra two degrees outweighed the potential harm.

Things to take into account are, I am the oldest of the testers (easily old enough to be ArizonaLogan's father), I tend to a high ball flight so the lower loft helps, the Haywood's will now be the same lofts as my Titleist's so it's a straight head-to-head.

What Joshua didn't ask is what sort of divots do you make? Are you a sweeper or a digger or even in-between? It just happens that I am a sweeper, so the lower bounce should be easy to adapt to.

Plus this is a test, I am more than happy to be able to try out the lower bounce and report back my findings. That's the true fun of being an MGS tester, trying the unknown so that everyone can make an educated decision when buying gear.

@Nunfa0 that’s good info. One of the reviews I watched on the Haywood’s mentioned about the leading edge looking almost “sharp” compared to some irons almost having a bit of a dual sole or more rounded leading edge to hep with turf interaction. Hope they come soon!
