Taylormade support/replacement outside of warranty?

Recommended Posts

Hopefully this is the right area to post this and was looking for some advise.

A good friend of mine bought SIM2 irons, brand new the year they came out (summer of '21 I believe) and he started running into issues with them early last year. This would have put him within the 2 year warranty window, but the issues were just that the heads were coming loose from the shafts. Easy fix for someone like me, who can do basic club repair. So he gave me two of the irons to fix and upon fixing, I noticed that the amount of shaft that actually goes into the head was a lot less than I was expecting, especially with the amount of work and sets I have worked on in the past. There was about 1 and 1/4 inch of shaft above the ferrule to the end of the shaft, making the surface area a lot smaller for the epoxy to bond into the head. Every other set/wedge I have ever worked on has at least a couple inches of shaft to go into the hosel. I went ahead and epoxied them anyways but let him know that it could become an issue again. Fast forward to this year, hes got about 4 or 5 clubs that are all becoming loose, including the ones I have already fixed.

He contacted Taylormade this week and they responded with:

This is a little surprising to me as I have seen all over social media how good their customer support has been. I know their multi-piece drivers have had many issues in the past, with the crowns flying off or the faces becoming loose and cracked, and people outside of warranty windows have gotten these replaced. It seems to me that whoever put his set together did a terrible job and it should be rectified.

Does anyone have any experience with TM support and have any suggestions to help out?

I thought I replied to this one - sorry - honestly I think Taylor Made is honoring its 2 year warranty here. The SIM2 line is 3 years old. Your friend could have bought a set on clearance last month, in which case it would be covered or he could have been in the first wave, in which case it would not.

I’m having an issue with theM over driver. My year old stealth 2 developed a rattle. Loved that driver - they replaced the head only with a Qi10. It is not working with the Stealth 2’s shaft. Others that I’ve spoken with have told me the same thing - shafts that fit a player in the stealth line did not in this iteration of Gi10.  I ran I to my golf tech fitter at the range this evening and  he’s going to take up the battle for me.

Maybe your friend could go back to the place that he bought the irons and get a receipt?  Does he have a credit card record of the transaction?  That might work,

Driver: Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  R flex   - 44.25

Fairways:  Ping G410 5, 7, 9 wood  Alta CB red 65 R flex

Hybrid:  Ping G410  26 degree  Alta CB Red 70 R flex

Irons: Ping G430  7-PW, 45, 50 Alta CB black 65 soft R flex

Wedges:  Ping 195 S54, E58

Wedges and irons are - 1/2” and one degree flat

Putter: Sacks Parente Duke 32.5”

Ball: Titleist Pro VI or Callaway Chrome Soft X ls

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

I've also seen a lot of TM replacements outside the 2yr warranty period, but most all have been driver heads when there was a previous known issue with that head line.

But let's talk about those irons.  I've never seen an iron that installs "a couple inches" into an iron head.  Most are about 1.25" insertion depth and anything over 1 1/8" should be plenty.  So if you are getting 1 1/4" insertion depth there is absolutely nothing wrong with those irons.

I think a better question to ask is does he keep those irons in his car or trunk most of the summer?  I really don't think it's out of line that you have epoxy failure in 2-3 years if he is keeping them in the trunk most of the time.  Not to question your club making abilities, but the question also has to be asked if the tips were cleaned/sanded and if the hosel's were reamed out and made sure you got all of the dust and debris out of there from glue residue.  Was the epoxy measured evenly and mixed thoroughly?

I'm not sure what the initial email to TM said, but if it was something along the lines of the shafts are only inserting 1 1/4" and the epoxy is failing then I can see how they might have thought the problem wasn't on their end.

I guess the bottom line is that from what you are describing I don't think the problem lies with any sort of manufacturing defect on TM's part.  I would just get some new epoxy, make sure everything is properly prepped and glue them back up.  Then don't leave them in the trunk all summer in super hot weather 🙂

Expecting a company of any kind to warranty a item out of warranty is a little bit of entitlement.

Have they done it? Sure and it’s usually based on club type and inventory, but also the cause of damage.

We are in a time where inventory isn’t as high as it used to be and more and more people are gaming the system.

I see nothing wrong with TM’s response
