RetiredBoomer
Arnold Palmer had a major cultural / sociological impact on golf-- his was a household name that everybody knew at a time when everybody didn't know the names of prominent players in golf.-- but he wasn't on the Jack/Tiger level in terms of accomplishment. I liked that his head was never a logo billboard--he played bareheaded in his prime. Who does that now? cksurfdude, silver & black, The TXBexar and 1 other
silver & black
Arnie's Army might say he 's underrated, but I think he's right where he should be....... a beloved player, man, human being in the world of golf. pbclub, Shankster, GaDawg and 4 others
jaskanski
His record speaks for itself. Shame he couldn't get the USPGA under his belt but he did finish T2 on three ocassions. Solid player and gentleman. Thumbs up from me. Underated? No way. cksurfdude
Big Arnie fan and really admire the way he became known as a true gentleman to everyone. Recently took a road trip with my wife including a stay in Latrobe PA at the Springhill Suites - which gets you guest access to Arnie's course the Latrobe CC! (Very stoopit me grabbed a Small off the rack, not a Medium I usually wear ) What a fantastic course and golfing experience! Will def go back someday (to get the right size shirt ). The clubhouse and locker rooms are effectively museum collections of Arnie photos and memorabilia. Here's the back of the scorecard - I particularly like the quote on the bottom left... Underrated? IMHO he absolutely belongs up there with all the greats (regardless of trophy count) for all the positive impacts and the ways he helped develop the sport into what it's become today. jolter1
No I don't think so only with the fact that my late father, who never followed golf, knew who Palmer was and his background. Palmer had that personality that went beyond golf. cksurfdude 1 Quote Driver: Ping G430 Max 10.5 Fairway Woods: Ping SFT G425 3-5 Hybrid Ping G410 4H Irons Ping G425 5-LW Putter: Ping Anser 2 Ball: Titleist Tour Speed/AVX Bag: Titleist All shafts are Ping's CB Alta, Regular in Woods and Hybrids, Stiff in the irons ( I just like these shafts and never saw a reason to look for others)
Old New Golfer
Arnie sure was popular. Did alot for the game. Jack didn't like him. He really wasn't that good a golfer. Jack repeatedly bore down with his smartest game. Motivated by Arnie. To steal the win in the end. ....This was admited by Jack. cksurfdude 1 Quote To be candid.... I would rather walk a field with a good Bird Dog, than to walk a golf course with people. Only problem is, I can't walk.
Donn lost in San Diego
Very good golfer, confident putter, and his impact made everything after possible. He did win a few events too. Two years of 8 wins, including 2 majors each time. He inspired so many. If he trained like you can train today, he might have won 20 more events. The only golfer who could beat him was Jack, who was 10 years younger. Arnold born in '29 grew up in the depression. cksurfdude 1 Quote #1 PXG 0211 10.5 deg, Evnflo Riptide CB 40 gram A flex. 3W: Callaway Steelhead Xr, Tensei Blue CK 55 gram A flex. 5W : Titleist TSi 1, Aldila Ascent 40 regular flex. LICC
What is he rated? He seems to be considered an all-time great. I would think he is in the top-10 of all time, roughly. About the same as Mickelson. Agree that Trevino is underrated. If he didn't get injured from the lightning strike he might have won 10 majors. cksurfdude
Shankster
I didn’t really know him much, but my mom’s dad was an absolute huge Arnie fan. My grandmother told me that if Arnie was on TV the whole house was watching. Early years, hair style was popular, what he wore… and not just among golfers in their town. He is definitely a legend of golf, and as time goes on the replays of his rounds become less and less. We get YouTube golf instead. cksurfdude 1 Quote Driver: Callway Rogue St Triple Diamond 9* 2 HY: Mizuno STZ 230 16* (set to 13.75) 2 Iron: Taylormade UDI 17* Irons: 2019 Titleist T100S 3-PW Wedges: Vokey SM6 54* and SM9 48* / Taylormade MG3 TW 56* Putter: PING Anser Ball: Pro V1 Bag: Jones
