For anyone considering Sub 70 their customer service is great.  One of the shafts broke on my son's 639 CB set of clubs and I asked Sub 70 for help purchasing a replacement shaft.  Getting the correct tip diameter and trimming instructions is confusing to me.  Sub 70 promptly requested photos of the head and shaft and then volunteered to re-shaft the club for free.  It is great to do business with a company that would warrantee a club when the customer did not even ask for that.

Played there last summer.  It is a great layout that is challenging but also fair.  Bring your "A" putting game for the greens they are faster than what I am used to with quite a bit of slope.  When in doubt the putt will break toward Lake Michigan.   The groups I have played in hit a water ball into Lake Michigan on the number 12 tee box that has a large drop off overlooking the lake.

There is also a line on the adapter that corresponds with a line on the back of the clubhead.  They should be lined up and it is easy to miss if you don't know what to look for.

mooremikea reacted to Popeye64 in Maltby really upping their game...TS-1 Forged Hollow body Irons
Sorry I didnt see this till just now. I spent quite a lot of time with TS-1, TS-2 and a TE head when the TS series first came out. In identically shafted clubs I found the TS series, either one to be a better match for my game. I tend to be a digger and with such a low COG with the TE/DBM I hit them far too high and get excessive spin. I also tend to leave them out to the right.
I had a mixed set in play with the TS-1 in PW to 7, TS-2 5,6. My swing was a bit off early in the year,, was all mental and more on that later,, and I just seemed to not be loving what I was getting from the TS-1s. It was more my swing than anything else so I switched out to my MMB BLACKS which I have always done well with. I just felt more at ease with them. I still carry the 5,6 TS-2, but now 6-Gw MMBs. Over the winter I will tinker some more with the TS-1s and try some different shafts. I will probably also add a TS-2 7i to the bag and continue with a mixed set. I prefer the traditional loft progression you get with the MMBs so that's a factor in my decision on what I'm gaming.
I'm sure you are dieing to try a TS compared to your DBMs and I do recommend grabbing one to tinker with.

Here is what I'm dealing with in my game and why I strayed from the TS-1s. All year I had been suffering from a back nine lull in my game. I would swing strongly and aggressively through the ball on the front nine and after the turn start steering the ball. I couldnt seem to shake this trend and switched to the MMBs. Those clubs really penalize a lazy swing. Knowing these clubs were not as forgiving made me make a better swing in the back of my mind,, so it helped my game but didnt cure my back nine ways. After a two week hard look at my game in Tournament play,, back to back pro-ams recently,, I realized what I was doing. On the front side I would be striking the ball well and really make a good move through the ball with a strong finish. A lot of great shots and make a ton of birdies. About at the turn I was tightening up and trying to steer the ball. I would get mentally tired and sort of short circuit when striking the ball. A lack of a good follow through made things worse. Poor contact and erratic flight that had me all around the green. A strong short game made up for sloppy iron play so I could sort of get away with what was happening. In talking with the Pro in the three Pro-ams in a row we broke down what I was doing. He said it was like two different golfers. Why I couldn't see this myself is a damn mystery to me. Just mental break downs late in the round. Anyways.... the TS-1s will get a shot again in the off season.

So I did this today, and it was a very valuable 30 minutes.  Loved every minute of it.   Titleist is offering virtual golf ball fittings for free.  You get a 30 minute  zoom call with a member from the Titleist Ball Fitting Team. You fill out a questionnaire ahead of time.  Then during the call, Luke--in my case asked me about my current ball--Prov1X, why I chose it, what else I've played, then several questions about the type of shots I hit and what I want out of a ball. It wasn't cookie cutter at all, it was very individualized.
I play a Prov1X and the reason I do, is the higher launch, slightly longer distance and increased green spin.  He asked if I felt I lost just a touch of spin on say a 7 iron approach, would I still like the results.   I said, I suppose and asked why.   He went on to explain how the ProV1 Left Dash might help me with taking a tad more spin off the ball--which is something I said I wouldn't mind seeing off the tee.   He explained it will be a bit firmer feeling the VX, and if I felt I didn't like that, then I could absolutely stick with the X as it fits my game based on everything I said.
Part of the process is they send out a sample pack of the recommended ball, so that's pretty cool.
I highly recommend it for anyone that either wants to hear from a fitter which Titleist ball would fit them, or just in general learn more about ball performance.

Reminds me of two years ago went I got an invite to the Adidas Sergio Garcia 20 year partnership event at Wentworth.
I got there ridiculously early and decided to have breakfast, sitting there with a pot of coffee and waiting for food when the one and only Gary Player walks past. I jumped out my chair and introduced myself telling him how my father used to be a big fan of his ever since he has seen Player open a local course to use back in the 70's. Amazingly Player remembered the course and invited himself to sit and have coffee with me while he waited for someone.
We sat with my wife and I listening to him tell us about the old days with Nicklaus and Palmer for nearly 10 mins before someone came a nd found him to tell him his guests where there.
Incredible experience and purely a matter of being in the right place at the right time.

Today I took advantage of some free time and called into my local Golf Warehouse to get inspired for my next purchase. When I walked through the door my heart skipped a beat when I saw my childhood idol Sir Bob Charles in there doing a book signing. Sir Bob is the greatest Kiwi golfer ever and he's a lefty so I was obsessed with him when I first started playing this beautiful game.
Naturally I was far too shy to just rock up and talk to him but then he started talking to one of the fitters about shafts. Next thing I am watching Sir Bob be fitted and talking to him about launch angles and spin rates. Needless to say his swing is as pure as when he won the open and he still needs heavier shafts. He did like a xxio 7 wood and took a spider home to try.
This has to rate as one of the greatest golfing highlights in my life 🤩😍😍

What grips are you trying to put on? It doesn’t hurt to use a little bit of solvent or mineral spirits to help the grip slide and not stick. It doesn’t take a lot, I use my pinky finger and dip it into the solvent and lightly rub it on the tape and just around the tip of the grip to help it slide sometimes.

It’s more likely due to the lower target price point vs the manufacturing location. Tony mentioned in a podcast that he noticed a correlation between price point and consistency during this ball lab effort.

On a funny side note.   Yesterday I played in a scramble that was raising funds for a local Head Pro and his fight with cancer.
I pulled up to the Bag Drop and as I was getting out I heard a voice say, "Who's this showing up with ProV license Plate"

Oh yeah, of course it's Robert!!  What a shock!
I turned and it was the TM and Bridgestone Reps standing next to each other.   Yikes 😲   Busted...LOL
Fortunately both of them had seen it before and are really good guys and always enjoy giving me a hard time.
Note: And yes before anyone comments, the plate was renewed in September and is legal 🙂

mooremikea reacted to Kansas King in "Players distance" Irons
The "players distance" category is essentially an amalgamation of what people have said they want and what marketing departments want which is distance plus better looks. As others above have said, players distance are essentially a GI club shoved into a "players"-esque looking profile. They are longer distance because they use stronger lofts, have a hotter face (higher COR/CT), and some are designed for lower spin. They then fill the hollow-body irons with "gooo" to support the face and make them sound better.
If you have been playing 690CBs for a long-time then you will probably find some added forgiveness with the 921s. I think the issue with distance control is that some of the designs are just don't spin enough for some people resulting in many flyer type shots that carry an extra 10 yards. This is more likely a result of poor fittings than anything but it is noteworthy. Hot VFT iron faces have been around for quite a while now and they aren't bad at all. I think the future of golf for everyone, including the pros, is VFT faces of some sort. This will essentially eliminate the traditional forged club of the past but there really isn't any reason why someone shouldn't go after the added forgiveness related to mishit distance, even the pros.
I think some of the other grumblings related to "players distance" irons and the hollow-body designs is that some of them simply have bad designs or are manufactured poorly. Some of the hollow body designs like the Ping i500 have really high COGs that make them difficult to hit solid. Hollow-body iron designs are tougher to manufacture and design because the thicker topline and back plate to make it hollow all add weight up high and pull up the COG. Plus, filling them with "goo" can can also raise the COG as the weight of that substance isn't as low as possible in the clubhead. Full hollow-bodies like the P790 offer some benefits but I think we will see manufacturers thin out the top half of irons in the future and pull the hollow cavity lower to bring about better playing characteristics by lowering the COG. You can see this on clubs like the Maltby TS1/TS2s, Mizuno HMBs, and a few others.
I think the JPX 921 line from Mizuno is really good. I am also a really big fan with what Titleist is doing with the T-series. I'll be curious to see what the Maltby club testing shows for the new models introduced this year. On the whole, it seems clubs have become better and I'll be curious to see if the new designs have drifted towards Maltby's design philosophy of lower COGs. The real outlier in the golf world to Maltby's design philosophy is Wilson, as many of their more recent designs have very high COGs including their MGS winning D7s.

Perhaps but you can usually find the Maxflis for the 2 dozen for $50 deal and you can get them that day, instead of hoping that Snell has the ball you want in stock (which lately they seldom do) and then waiting a week for them to ship to you.
Ive played Snells, Ive played Maxflis.  To me, they are pretty much the same.  The only difference is that Maxfli doesnt have the hype behind it that Snell does.

mooremikea reacted to Kansas King in Maltby Playability Factor - which irons are easiest to hit
I've spent a lot of time comparing the MPFs, my non-scientific testing, and MGS/member reviews and I will say the MPF ratings are not the bible. However, the measurements are good if you know you want an iron with a low COG or high MOI, etc. I got a set of Callaway X-20s new in 2008 and will say that they are certainly very forgiving and "playable" and Maltby's MPF reflects that with a score over 1000. However, are they the best iron for everyone? No. I replaced that set with a used set of 2007 Callaway X-Forged irons and will say I became almost immediately more accurate with my irons, but I gave up some forgiveness. I feel like the full "playability" of irons and woods has not yet been fully or truly quantified by anyone yet. It's partially because golf is very feel based as everyone is different but it's also because there are difficult to measure dynamics in the swing that are difficult to identify and capture. Theoretically, Maltby's methods should be rock solid as they are based on math and the principles of physics but math doesn't capture the full story behind golf clubs. If it did, every club would be built using Maltby's principles that drive the MPF.
I think a few of the big reasons, the MPF isn't the gospel is because every time you add MOI, blade length, and reduce the COG well below 0.84", you give up feel. A Callaway Big Bertha iron and Titleist MB blade will perform the same on a simulator all things being equal. However, when you put that club in human hands suddenly feel comes into play. You put a Big Bertha iron in the hands of a golfer and they will hit consistent shots. However, if you put that Titleist MB blade in their hands, and they will probably hit shots with more variability, but that variability will include shots more accurate than any from the Big Bertha. I don't have anything to back me up but I think it is because the more compact club heads provide much better feel for exactly where it is in the swing. I think when you make a club head wider and longer, you lose your ability to sense exactly where the club head is in the swing.
I think if you were to add a measurement of the clubhead's volume and insert that into the MPF, you could potentially gain the elusive thing that is missing from the MPF, which is feel.

If you ever plan on getting eWheels then go with the Rovic RV1S.  The front wheel makes all the difference in maneuvering on the golf course.   The eWheels did not work nearly as well on a ClicGear 3.5.  My family has two ClicGear 3.5s and the RV1S and love them.  They are more money when purchase but they work round after round without any maintenance.
