Has anyone had a chance to put these in play? If so what are your thoughts? I still game the MTB-X yellow and am wondering if I should upgrade to the new MTB Prime 3.0 or 4.0 Yellow or look at switching to the TP5/5X Yellow or PRO V1/V1X Yellow.

Apparently, the Prime 3.0 and 4.0 balls came in this week as scheduled. I received a shipping notification overnight from Snell Golf, and I am receiving two dozen of the Prime 3.0/Prime 4.0 “Tour Test Packs” tomorrow.

    Date 05/02/2024
Course Name Sun City Golf Club Cowan Creek
    Gross Score 65
    Course Handicap -1
    Gross Strokes over/under par -7
    Net Score to Par -6
    Net Score 66
    Net Birdies or better
    Longest Drive

I now have the course record for all three courses here from the green tees. No bogies and 7 natural birdies shot 65. Hit 13 of 14 fairways, 17 greens and 29 putts. Slope of 118 and course rating of 66.6.

    Excellent round!

Keep this up and you will soon shoot your age, if you haven’t done that already!

  3. I have played a Callaway Epic Flash 7-wood, shafted with an Accra Tour Z LS 85-S shaft, for more than 5 years. The carbon fiber crown cracked on this club nearly 3 years ago, and I repaired the cracked crown using high impact epoxy about a month later; however, that repair started to fail last year and I switched to using a Sub 70 949-X adjustable 7-wood.

I have gotten decent, but less consistent, results from the Sub 70 fairway wood (shafted with a UST Mamiya ProForce Black 85-S shaft, which is as close I could find to the no longer available Accra shaft that is in my Epic Flash 7-wood). I can’t say that I am dissatisfied with the Sub 70 7-wood, but it’s just not nearly as consistent and predictable as the Callaway 7-wood has always been. Every so often, I search Callaway Preowned and ebay to see if there is an Epic Flash 7-wood available for sale. However, the few of them that I have seen have been in horrible condition, so I have stayed with what I have.

I’m getting a new Maltby KE4 TC Pro adjustable 7-wood head from Golfworks, which is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Once I get it built up to my specifications, this 7-wood will get a thorough tryout and if it passes its audition this is likely to become my new gamer in the 7-wood slot.

I've only had a caddie once - at Bandon - but he had a towel and cleaned my ball before I hit my putt every time. I thought it was a little excessive and didn't think a ball that wasn't clean would make a difference.

    And then I saw this:

Now to be fair I don't know how accurate this is? could he be rolling the clean balls a little faster so they go in?

But -- I'm no longer taking a chance. I mark and clean before every putt - unless it's within 3 feet.

How about you? Do you mark and clean? Do you find it makes a difference?

Yes; I find that cleaning the golf ball whenever and wherever it is allowed, and certainly prior to putting, helps a lot.

By the way, the caddies that I had two years ago in NW England and Scotland were the best caddies I have ever had, and I have had more than a few caddies here in the USA. The best caddies I’ve had in the US were at a couple of private courses in the Philadelphia area, particularly at Huntington Valley C.C.

You can order a tester pack consisting of (6) Prime 3.0 balls and (6) of the Prime 4.0 model. However, according to Dean Snell, the arrival of the Prime 4.0 balls may be delayed. Originally, Snell was planning on having all of the new Prime balls available to start shipping today.

I preordered two dozen of the new Snell MTB Prime balls (one dozen each of the 3.0 and the 4.0), but I haven’t received a shipping notification, so I suspect that they have not yet arrived at Snell Golf.

  6. Update (additional six rounds in the books):

I have now worn the Squairz VELO shoes for for six more rounds (three 9-holers and three 18-holers). This makes it eight total rounds that I have played while wearing the Squairz VELO shoes (five 18-hole rounds and three 9-hole rounds). In more than half of these rounds, I have walked and in the other three I rode in a cart because I was recovering from two weeks with pneumonia. After my first nine-hole walking round about 3.5 weeks ago, I put a pair of Protalus orthotic insoles in these VELO shoes because I have very high arches and I got cramps in the arches of my feet. I have not had any foot pain since then, and the shoes have been very comfortable for walking 18 holes, even on two consecutive days and 3 out of 4 consecutive days last week.

These VELO shoes continue to provide fantastic support and they are considerably lighter in weight than any other Squairz golf shoes that I have previously worn. The weight difference is fairly noticeable after walking 18 holes (16,000-plus steps).

I cannot say whether these Squairz shoes have helped me to increase my clubhead speed, and in fairness because I have been wearing Squairz shoes for more than two years before I was selected to participate in this test, I seriously doubt that I am experiencing further gains in clubhead speed. However, the stability that is provided by these shoes certainly gives me the confidence to “swing aggressively” and I have consistently been hitting the ball as far or farther than I generally hit it with all of the clubs in my bag.

I am definitely very happy with these golf shoes, and with the great stability and support that they provide!

Any staining of the suede like surface?

I was wearing a pair of the black suede-like Speed Bold shoes from Squairz for about a year before I was selected as a tester for the Squairz  VELO shoes. The suede-like surfaces did not stain at all, but they did get dusty and dirty when playing in dry, sandy conditions. This was easily remedied by a light brushing with a stiff-bristle brush.

Thank you for the information! Are they comparable to other players distance clubs?

The Maltby brand is the in-house brand (or premium brand) of the Golfworks. They are named “Maltby” because they are designed by Ralph Maltby, both the CEO and Chief Designer at Golfworks and a legendary golf club designer (among other things, Ralph Maltby was the head club designer at MacGregor). All of his designs are original and all are very thoroughly thought-out and designed. There have been some quirky designs over the years, mostly his ultra game improvement models, but he has also been responsible for some absolutely classic designs, and I think that the current TS Series (TS1, TS2, TS1 IM, TS3 and TS4 models) are Maltby’s best ever. His KE4 TC Pro, TC MAX and TC4 ICT drivers, fairways and hybrids are also excellent.  You can check out all of these designs on the Golfworks website.

For me, KEEPING my single digit handicap has been far more difficult than initially attaining that single digit ‘cap. As I have previously posted on this forum, I played to a single digit handicap (between 6 and 8.3) for the better part of two decades. However, following some serious injuries, including ACL, MCL and multiple meniscus tears, plus two bouts with cancer and a very serious infection that occurred following one of my cancer surgeries and prevented me from playing golf or doing much at all for more than 7 months, my handicap index has not been below 11 in the last 12 years.

Try as I might, I have not been able to get back down to single digits since I was in my early 60s in age. I occasionally shoot some good scores, and have broken 80 a handful of times over the last couple of years, but too many scores between 85 and the low 90s keep my handicap in the double digits these days.

Last nights phone call from my 2nd job (I work part time at a golf course) got me thinking 🤔

Edited here: If you play a course thay has personalized service options:

Do you tip valets or other course/clubhouse staff when you play?

I usually keep a few singles in my pocket if they help me out in any way, whether it's a parking lot pickup, bag assist, cart pull up service, etc.

Usually if I'm working the front areas, any tips I've recieved will go back to the others I work with.  If I'm by myself that day, I pass it on the next time I play. (Which is usually right after my shift)

Yep; I typically tip the bag attendant at least a couple of bucks, if not a full fiver, when they load my bag on a cart. I also tip the kid who cleans and wipes down my clubs (also usually $5).

  11. I am in full agreement with those who have answered that 3-putt greens have more impact on a golfer’s overall score than fairways hit or missed. The only exception is when the missed fairways result in OB or lost ball penalties.

I am known for making semi-miraculous recoveries from the rough and even from out of the woods, and I also make more than my fair share of up-and-downs for par, or at worst to save a bogey after hitting my tee shot into some ugly place and having to punch out.

3-putts are the bane of my golfing existence, and when I can avoid 3-putting (or worse), I generally score quite well and win my matchplay competitions.

What kind of golfer are you? Do you like to warm up a lot, a little, none at all?

It seems to be a fine line
    - too early and you can end up with a full blown range session where you're working on drills and end up in a poor mental state
    - too late and you don't have enough time to get your mind and body ready to go

Are you someone who likes to have a full warm up (wedges/irons/woods/pitch/putt), just likes to chip and putt, walk straight to the first tee like a baus? something else?

I personally try to get there at least an hour before but not more than 90 minutes before since I end up hitting too many balls.

If there is a practice range available, I will certainly use it prior to my round, and I will also hit some chips and pitches and a handful of bunker shots. Therefore, I show up at least an hour prior to my tee time.

If there is no range at the course, I still arrive about 40-45 minutes prior to my tee time so that I can hit some chips and do at least 10-15 minutes of putting before teeing off.

... I hope so. 🤗  Dream scenario for the Bears! That means Joe Alt would be most likely be available at #9.

If he is still available at pick #9, the rumor mill and draft pundits have Da Bearz taking Odunze.

I would say that it’s about a toss-up whether Joe Alt will still be available at #9.

What would you think of your Bears trading pick #9 (and maybe pick #75) to Buffalo for picks #28, 60 and Buffalo’s 2025 first round pick?

... Most exciting draft in years. After Williams, Maye and Daniels who moves up to take a QB? When will the first defensive player come off the bard? Will Harrison, Nabers and Odunze go in the top 10? So many interesting questions to be answered soon!

OK; here’s my prediction: The Buffalo Bills trade up to get pick #7 from the Titans (I’d actually love to see them pull off a trade with the Cardinals for the #4 pick, but that won’t happen), giving up their #28 and #60 picks in the process, and maybe an early 2025 pick if they want to get the Titans’ second round 2024 pick (#38) in the deal. Then, they draft Odunze with the #7 pick.

Puma Spikeless versus Sqairz Velo with driver:

I said I would compare the shoes, and was really interested to test the stability claims of sqairz AND see if it translates to results.  The driver is my worst club in the bag and I tend to spray it a bit (something for me to work on).  Early in the season, the results will be a bit worse - but here is the results!

    image.png.6c5d5ceeb7166951160f21d21843f946.png

Sqairz Velo shoe and driving performance - what is immediately noticed is my left of green bias and it was surprising to me.  Is it a swing flaw that I need to work on? Maybe. I think it is actually the stability of the shoe, and a little more torque causing a different shot shape for me -> in some cases a sever hook!

    image.png.2035f443f863a1b80f9c91e525bd359b.png

The Puma Spikeless and driving performance - you see a more normal distribution (sorry math guy here) and that data matches my normal spray patterns. I could feel the ability to move my feet (not like Scottie) and although comfortable it does seem to cause less accuracy.

Initial results: Sqairz is more accurate to the range of 6-9%, left biased a good 10% more (and this is with me trying to correct path and stance). My first 30 hits were a whopping 80% left biased!

So far, I am not seeing a left (or right) bias in my shot pattern when wearing the Squiarz VELO golf shoes (I'm now 5 rounds into my testing).  However, I had been wearing Squairz almost exclusively for about 2 to 2.5 years before getting selected for this test.  One thing that I am noticing with the VELO that was also there, but not nearly as pronounced with earlier generations of Squairz shoes, is the great stability that these shoes provide on uneven and/or slightly slippery surfaces.  Squairz shoes have always been quite good for stability, but the VELO model seems to take that stability factor to an even higher level for me!
