  1. The hardest hole at our course has a fun story the old pro likes to tell so I'll do my best here. It's the 18th at Belvedere in Sherwood Park, AB, Canada (Where Chuba Hubbard is from for those college football fans).
Anyway, the pro organized Moe Norman to come by and give the members some lessons for a weekend. Before the lessons start, he and Moe go out and play a quick 18, and our course is nice and is in good shape, but is not a jaw-dropper by any means.
So they're playing and Moe is getting all the GIRs but can't putt to save his life but is fairly unimpressed with our course. Then he comes to the 18th: an elevated green, long long par four with a slight dog leg left and a postage stamp green surrounded by bunkers. Moe takes one look and says, "Whoa! What's this hole doing on this course?"
The pro always likes to add in that he beat Moe by 3 strokes, but his second job is a realtor so who really know.

  2. One of the games that I'll play in my head is what I call 13.  Divide the round into groups of 3 holes.  The goal is to shoot 13 or better on 3 holes.  Do it fine, don't then move on to the next 3 and start over.  If you can shoot 13 on each group of 3 holes, you'll break 80 with a 79.  IF, and that's a big if, you can keep your mind off the total score and focus on just 3 holes at a time, it just mind allow you to focus differently.
I do a similar bet with a golfing buddy where we play medal play for 3 holes for a buck, then the next 3 holes for another buck, and so on until all 18 holes completed.  It is much less stressful than focusing on how far down you are on an 18 hole game, match or medal.

Love that idea. I've tried adding one to par on each hole but it doesn't trick my brain enough. I think I'll start using your way, but play "14" instead.

I've also found that repeating "Never mad with a bogey" helps me too. Even if I three (or four) putt, I'll never be mad at myself for a bogey.

  3. You question is very subjective and I won’t answer the “good” part but the aha moment part.
I was a 90s golfer and was tired of scoring in the 90s so I took some lessons. The lessons changed what I did and my swing became uncomfortable. After a few weeks I went out and s*** a 76. At that aha moment I knew I had the potential to play well I just needed to train myself to play at that level consistently.
Damn, who is your teacher?? I've been taking lessons for two years, and I've definitely improved but not in the 70s yet.
But I remember shooting a 102 when I first started and thinking "Man, I'm good." If I did that today I'd rage quit for a month. It's all relative.

  4. The scores were high easily over double par, so I think that would be a good idea. The only problem I see with that is if they're hitting double par before the green they never get a chance to putt.

In my opinion, that's ok. Getting to the green is the hard part when first starting. If you have to pick up before you get there... Well that's one less 3 putt that a fellow golfer has to go through!

  5. Seed over all the cart paths and any golfers that want to play have to walk, take a caddie, or bring a push cart.  Yeah, I know, I just created a riot over in "The Villages", but bring it on.  I know it's unpopular to suggest such a thing, but back in the day golf was supposed to be a sport where the walking component was a big part of the competition and game.
Pace of play is maxed out at 3 1/2 hours for any group on the course.  If it's good enough for St. Andrews, then it's good enough for wherever golf is played.  You punch a card at the turn, and if you are over time (1 hour and 45 minutes per nine for those of you keeping score), your group is asked to leave the course.  Well, asked is too polite.  You'd be shown the parking lot by our staff of marshalls who are all college students from the athletic department.
Maximum handicap of 18 is allowed on the course.  Yeah, sure, that seems extreme, but we have a nice big 'ol range over there for those of you who need to work on your game a bit to get down to the maximum number.  And while we're working with your game on the range we're discussing options #1 and #2 above.  Oh yeah, and if you want to play my course, you will HAVE to have an established handicap.  Don't worry, the course is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for you to play a round with the pro, to keep score and to have your scores posted for handicap.  We have at least 3 pros available at any time during these days to accommodate anyone interested in playing a round.  "Gee Swag, I just don't have the time to do this, yada, yada, yada."  Well, that's part of the problem honestly that I see with most public courses on the weekends.  Guys out there wasting everyone else's time because they haven't ever practiced their game, and just show up on Saturday or whenever and dust off the clubs from the last time they played and expect to actually keep a ball in play.  Then they ****** about how their game sucks while playing a 5 hour round and holding everyone up behind them.
My course design would incorporate the following holes and distances:
    Par 3s of 100, 115, 130, 145, 160 and 185.
    Par 4s of 315, 330, 345, 360, 375 and 390.
    Par 5s of 450, 465, 480, 505, 520 and 550.
Yeah, that's right.  Six of each par, and half of those holes would be short enough for the average golfer, and even the senior shorter hitters to reach par 4s easily in two and par 5s easily in three.  Don't worry.  If you think that 100 yard par 3 is too easy, you haven't seen my design.  The green would be about the size of my small bedroom in the house (10' x 12') and if you miss anywhere but short, the bunker you are in you are hitting out sideways or backwards, as it will be a true hazard and a true penalty, much like the postage stamp green's bunker is at Royal Troon.  Yeah, Rory took 6 shots to get out of it.  How will you fare?  I'd have doglegs on all the shorter par 4s and double doglegs on all the par 5s.  You want to cut the corner?  Go ahead.  Lots of water on the par 5s right about where you hot shot studs with 300 yards of carry will end up wet.  I will neuter your distance at every turn, and force you to use 14 clubs from your bag for all 18 holes.  Phil Mickelson may not approve, but GOOD!
Tournaments every other weekend at my course.  These are for both the men's and women's members.  You'll never get good at golf if you don't compete against your peers.  Tournaments are always gross and incorporate flights by your pre-established and witnessed handicapped scores.  The cost of these tournaments would be the same as the greens fees currently are, which would be free to members, plus a $10 entry fee for the kitty.  The winner of each flight takes how the cash.  And if you win flight "B", you are in flight "A" next time around.  If you are last in flight "B", you are in flight "C" next time around.
Honestly, the above is not realistic in our day and age when most folks are splitting their time 15 different ways.  I'm genuinely looking for 200 people for my type of club, where the membership fees are reasonable ($150 a month or less).  You will get in shape at my club, and you will always have a game waiting for you.  I would establish an online members only website where members could post requests for tee times, and seek pairings with fellow members.  I would also have a complete online database with all members contact information, and including handicaps.  There are no outliers or strangers at my club.  We all love golf, and we all want to play as much as possible.  Enough of the old boys club.  Everyone can play with everyone else, and there are no cliques at my club.  Be engaging with your fellow members or play somewhere else.
In my imaginary Field of Dreams course, I'd probably flip it so that Tuesday and Thursdays are for speed rounds that are finished in 3:45 max with flags on the putting green that are non-removable. I think that would get the point across.

My unpopular opinion is that wives should be invited to play sometimes (if they can).

  6. Overwatch player here.  I've tried BR games and I suck at them.   The maps are too big and I can't see what really good players are seeing a lot of time.

I tried playing Apex Legends and got called the worst random ever paired up with.  LUL

I just got into Overwatch. I'm used to COD but it's so fun I can't stop!

  7. In terms of handicap I have the same numbers (and goal) as you so I'm really curious and excited for you to see how it goes!

Last season I made some strides playing 1-2 times a week, but this season I should be going nearly every day in the summer. Anyway, you may have already answered this but how often are you planning on playing this upcoming season?

  8. I agree. But of course it depends on the bogey golfer. A bogey golfer could be a good ball striker, but suck at the short game.

The problem with single digit players (myself included) giving recommendations to bogey golfers is that many times what seems easy, is not easy for someone with less skill. It's all well-intentioned, but is it very helpful?

This thread was started by a higher handicap player, but we have not heard much from bogey+ players. I would like to get some feedback from these players on what they have tried, what worked, what issues they have. Is that the intent of this thread?

I'm a bogey player! And your first sentence nailed it. I hit over 60% of fairways consistently with drives 275+ yds, but my short game is atrocious (which I'm realizing more and more). Putting is average (1.9/hole).

It's frustrating because I have the potential to be a single digit handicapper, but I just can't seem to put an entire round together. For example, last round I was +1 through 5 holes but ended with a 90. I've also had multiple rounds where I'll drop 5-9 strokes on the back. Going 49-40 or 47-42 is a regular occurrence. (I swear I warm up).

I read yesterday that PGA Tour guys are up and down 70% of the time from 50 yrds and in. This is where I struggle and am working to improve. I can't claim to be up and down with that percentage until I'm on the green.

What I did to reach this point was:

    - took lessons

    - use a tracking app like the Grint to find where the misses are

    - practice with a purpose

    - practice putting inside everyday with a PuttOut.

    Thanks for reading my $0.02.

  9. Not trying to brag at all. But my last round I just added up my 3 wood tee shots. And my average is 274.7 yards for that round. Firm fairways, maybe 10 yards of roll. This is one of the most versatile clubs in my bag.

Side note I averaged 247.3 with the 2 hybrid off the tee....

    Driver.... 265.4 at 10° maybe I need a 11-12° Driver.

My 3 wood is similar but not quite as far. It's my favourite club in the bag and love that I can hit it off the tee and off the turf.

It's also perfect for golf trips where you might not want to bring all your clubs. Just like Shankster said: versatile.

  10. Shot my best ever 42-44/86 today with also my best ever 34 putts. Pitched one in from about 75 for birdie (what a fantastic feeling for the ball to do exactly what you want). Also hit a personal best 7 GIR (if only I didn't 3 putt on two of them).

I only brought out the driver on two of the par 5s and it payed off. I've been having a wicked slice problem so I took it out on a dog leg right to play to it but wouldn't you know it, I hit it dead straight 290 into the trees, which led to a snowman because I was trying to hard to "make up for it". Magic happens when you put the driver away.

Now if I don't make those mistakes and a few more birdie putts fall I can see breaking 80, within a couple years anyway.

  11. This thread is hilarious. My additions:

If you wait for the group in front to get on the green before hitting your tee shot, you'll hit it well short of where they were to begin with.

If one playing partner birdies, the other will bogey or worse. You may still win the hole as long as no early celebration takes place, but the other partner will bogey.

  12. Best

    1. The Grint with shot tracking. It lets me know my distances accurately and the free stats are really helpful.

    2. FootJoys. They look great and I got them for $80 new at a boxing day sale. I can walk multiple rounds in a day and my feet are fine.

    3. UnderArmour gloves. I was unsure as I've never bought anything UA before but they're high quality very reasonably priced.

    4. Big Bertha Alpha used online. Just bought it this year but it's miles ahead of my old X460.

    5. Cleveland 588 CBs. I love hitting them. They offer enough forgiveness and feedback that I know exactly what the problem was after each shot. Plus they feel like butter when striped.

    Worst

    1. This is not the products fault but I go through 2 hats per season because they get covered in sweat stains.

    2. Lessons with a baaaaad coach. His "range" was indoors at a hockey rink and it was only about 25 yards long. He showed me a video of Adam Scott and told me to be like him. It was horrible. I've never felt so ripped off in my life.

    3. I got a set of brush tees for Christmas, and I hated them. It's just not the same.

I must be lucky because those are all I have for negatives, but I have around 5 more positives. Then again, I haven't been golfing as long as most of you.
