Granata13
@jlukesvery true and as lofts get stronger I am sure it will continue to become more common. My concern is adjust lofts or is it really necessary, I understand lofts don’t have to be prefect but curious how its worked for others. cnosil
adjusting the lofts is about gapping; not the clubs themselves. As was said, most manufacturers make it easy for their clubs to be put into combo sets. If you need to fix gaps, you just bend to the lofts that give you the correct distance. M. Parsons
12 hours ago, Granata13 said: Ok guys I am looking at a new set of irons and I am strongly considering doing a mixed set. Tell me your success stories and your horror stories, I want to hear them all. I want to hear what you would have done different and what you are glad you did! Thanks for your help!! I was thinking about getting some Hogan's, and all of their irons are gapped in 4* intervals, but I had an old CB/MB combo set collecting dust, so I had those bent to the correspond to the Hogan's. They were ok, but not modern enough to have any forgiveness at all. So, I decided to go with a new set of Srixon's...after much testing with other manufacturers as well of course. Srixon does have combo sets on their website for easy ordering...like @jlukes mentioned, but I decided to go with the ZX5 in the 4-5 irons, and the ZX7 in 6-PW. Now the ZX5 are stronger lofted than the ZX7, but for the way I did it, only the 5-iron would've been lofted too close to the 6-iron, so I ordered the 5-iron bent 1* weak to match the 5-iron loft of the ZX7. I still haven't received the 4-5 irons from my order, so I can't really give you a success or failure story. saz0418
I have a full set of Cobra F8 1 length irons 6i through GW + 55 degree SW-- all 7i length and lie. I purchased the Titleist T400 irons last Summer (6i - GW), and played with that full set for about 4 months. The T400 are lofted VERY strong. You kind of have to ignore the loft because club manufacturers are doing so much with hollow heads and thinning faces and general engineering that the lofts aren't the end-all/be-all that they used to be. But just as an example, the t400's wedges are 38 (pW), 43, and 49. You could just say that the 39 is really a 9i (and a strong one at that). But all the irons fly farther.... and higher... and descend steeper than the equivalent lofted clubs I have tested against. So you just have to test and know your set, which I can do because I got through COVID by buying a Skytrak launch monitor. So, after about 4 months, I missed the versatility and consistency of the 1 length irons, but really liked the extra distance. I ended up blending the set... 6,7, and 8i in the t400s and then 8- SW in the Cobra. Yes, you saw that right: 2, 8 irons. As previous posts have noted, you have to pay attention to the gaps. For me, I hit the T400 8i about 155 yds. The Cobra 1L 8i is 145, and then I gap down roughly 10 yds per iron from there. The 1` length irons give me full gaps with half shots from 75 to 120 yards. I can choke down to get 5 yard increments from the 10 yard gaps without worrying about hitting thin (because they are 7i length). This set up is much better all the way around. For reference, I am 62 yrs old and play to a 9.3 GHIN index. I play a couple of times a week as I am not yet retired. Almost all of the club manufacturers are now offering the hollow body irons, built essentially like a hybrid. Ping, Taylormade... its all the rage. And, as some others have mentioned, you can now get fitted with blended sets from most of the manufacturers, too. From my experience, the hollow body construction in the wedges and short irons produced more distance, but a lot more dispersion. I hit about 1 out of every 10 or 15 that have REALLY low spin and go 10 or more yards farther than plan for. That's a killer in a real round. I prefer the consistency and predictability of my traditional cavity back short irons and wedges (albeit, with mine, they are one length). Incidentally, the rest of my bag is a Ping G410 plus driver (10.5), Cobra F7 3W, Callaway Rogue 3h (19), Callaway XR 4h (22) -- and then 6,7,8i in the Titleist T400, 8i-SW in the Cobra F8. I have a 60 degree (Volkey) wedge I usually add to the back during drier, summer months. That's my experience. ---------- Wilson Staff Dynapwr Driver (TI) / Cleveland 3+ Hy-wood (18*) / Titleist 915 7w / Callaway XR 4h / Callaway XR 5h/ Mizuno JPX-921 Hot Metal 7i - GW / Tommy Armour 845 CB wedges (52, 56*)/ Tommy Armour 845+ LW (60). Ying Yang
I've never worried about having the same brand clubs throughout the bag. For irons/hybrids, the key to me is distance control. I have three hybrids that are over 15 years old and I keep playing them because I know exactly how far I hit them and for whatever reason, they are my three easiest clubs to hit as well. Same with a 10 year old gap wedge that I hit consistently on the sweet spot and can hit it 80 yards every time (full swing), so I build my other irons around these 4 clubs to get a bag full of clubs that are exactly 10 yards distance between them and it has worked very well. emergency9
IMHO, mixed iron sets are the only way to go. Forgiveness and higher launch with the longer irons, and shaping and trajectory control with the shorter irons has worked for me.
Doug21
I have had great luck with my Titleist 718 irons. I have a mixed set with3-4 AP3 and 5-9 in AP2’s. The distance gapping is still great even with the stronger lofts in the AP3’s. The AP3’s really help get the ball in air with the longer irons. I have no regrets. THEZIPR23
It all boils down to the gapping you get. Lofts don't matter for the most part. I played 585 4 & 5 785 6-pw for over a year. 785's. All were so the lofts were uniform. What I found was that there was a large gap between 6 & 5 and a close gap between 4 & 5. Even though from a loft perspective they were gapped properly. I went to the ZX 7's 4-pw and the gapping is better. This is obviously individual. If you can get the gapping correct I don't see a downside. TBT
I have seen several OEM's that are now offering mixed sets as one of their standard offerings. I have never played a mixed set myself but the idea of having "more feel" in my scoring clubs definitely intrigues me. I am a higher handicap player so I need the game improvement characteristics in my longer and mid irons but I am pretty good with my 8, 9 and PW so I could easily see how having more control with those clubs could possibly help my game. mr.paintmaker
I build customer clubs daily and have for 20+ years. Know your game, be honest Get fit - flex, grip, length/lie/loft, turf interaction, miss Fill gaps, not club #'s Have a budget, stick to it Folks have mentioned great combo options, Callaway, Taylormade, Mizuno, Srixon (very sexy choice), Titleist (my choice I play T200's with AP2 718's and a CB mixed in too) Benefits are irons are easily bended and personalized for your game. Troubles I seen are having a players' iron in place instead of a game improvement or vice versa. The miss match can cause numbers of issues. Or having too many combo/models within the set. Donn lost in San Diego
Three years ago I had a set of new cavity backs with pretty wide soles and great shafts for my swing. After a while, I wanted narrow soles on the 8-9-w for more accuracy and feel, so I went for a fitting, with forged Mizuno or Srixon in mind. I got Ping I 500s. I liked them so much I sold my whole set of cavity backs, and went down to the 6 iron on the Pings. I already had an older Mizuno Fli-Hi GFF 4 iron. So I was only missing a 5 iron. I picked up another new Mizu, a wave tech 5 hybrid with my shaft because it jumped into my cart on Ebay! If I were a few years younger, I might have gotten the Ping 5 iron, but I'm 66. I like my set now. I might be playing these irons for a long long time. So, yes, try mix, and if you have fitting available, let a good fitter do their job. You might even get the same irons but on different shafts for the long irons. Don't look at my handicap. I have scoliosis issues, and I worked 6 days a week since the virus hit and only played about 6 full rounds in a year just when I finally got my swing going. #1 PXG 0211 10.5 deg, Evnflo Riptide CB 40 gram A flex. 3W: Callaway Steelhead Xr, Tensei Blue CK 55 gram A flex. 5W : Titleist TSi 1, Aldila Ascent 40 regular flex. AndySP
I have a mixed set of new level irons with p-7 in the pf2 and 6-5 in the 902s. I haven’t carried a 4 iron since high school, and not because I could hit one then either. My next club up is a cut down 22 hybrid. This set up matched my trajectories with each club better than a full set of either iron. With a 6 iron I don’t have the consistency to keep my misses playable with the cb type iron. Honestly though if I could do it again I would try to get my hands on a 902 7 iron as I hit the pf2 better on a sim than I do now off the turf. I definitely recommend making sure you get the feel right, for lack of a more scientific term. I tried some of the different TM mixes and found some of them to be too different for me even though the numbers were ok. I’m much more comfortable with this mixed set than my last regular set. Good luck getting it dialed in. g430 lst TS2 20* hybrid, New Level PF-2: P-7; 902: 6-5 hi-toe 51* and 57* M Craft IV
drb1956
Don't have a coventional iron in my set. Driver, 3 wood, all hybrids from 18* to PW 46*. Bought a set from GigaGolf. Had 2 hybrids in my bag-18* and a 21*, with a set of Cally x-20's, but have been replaced with a set of Reva's from GigaGolf. They play straighter than the x-20s, and get up easier than any iron I ever played. Great feel, good distance, and they look good, for a very, very, reasonable price. And, you can customize with different shafts, length, and grips of your choice. Added 2 CBX2's, hit the links...
