After many years of playing golf, had a thought…if doesn’t matter what club I hit, as long as it is consistent.

Last time out, first three iron/approach shots were just terrible:

- 6 iron (shotgun start on par 3): weak and pushed left
- 9 iron: pushed left
- SW: pushed left and short

All of these were probably a stench for the club I was using, decided to take an easier swing and was seeing much more consistent distance control overall.  Maybe lost  1/2 club in distance, but control was fantastic.

We’ll see if I can get it through my head not to over-swing going forward…

If I really catch a 7-wood it goes about 160. I don't often really catch it. And a 5-iron (my longest iron) will go about 150 if I really tag it (same deal here). All too often my driver only goes about 150...

Understand the 150 driver, will think I really hit a good one and be 150-160. Voted for FW.

At this point, a comfortable 8 is my 150-155 club. I’ve gained some distance over the winter so it’ll be interesting to see how that translates on to the courses now that they’ve opened!

So dependent on which irons I’m playing.

A smooth full swing with my current muscle back blade 34 degree lofted 7 iron gives me a total distance of 155 yards.

I can juice my 38 degree lofted 8 iron to get to 150, but it is what I consider my 145 yard club.

In my previous set of irons that had hollow bodies and stronger lofts it was an easy 8 iron for sure or a strong 9.

That is why if anyone asks me what club I hit I just tell them what yardage I was playing it at.

With my old irons, 9i for sure. My new irons are stronger lofted, with the PW being the same as my old 9. Now, can I actually hit my iron properly to get it to go that distance? That's a different question.

Looking at the responses so far, I'm an outlier!  150 yards is my 7 wood.  That's at sea level of course.

What's that, a 9 iron at altitude?  Only kidding (and wishful thinking)!

I am what I am!

Were Jamie to overlay the poll responses with forum age demographics, it would make perfect sense 😆.  Guessing here, but suspect we're on the far right side of the bell curve.  I most often use my 7i for 150 yard shots but will be quick to grab my 6i if it's into the wind or I want to make sure to avoid a soft front or other trouble.

Actually that thought process is something I've developed the past few years and has helped me lower my index.  I always ask myself "where the hurt is" on shots... better to be a bit long or short?

Would also have to consider the lifts of each club…I’m playing irons circa 2012, which I would imagine are much weaker than many played today.

Since @GolfSpy_APH mentioned he has more time now, should be no problem for him to put this all together!

As I illuded to above, in the immortal words of a great wiseman (Popeye the Sailor Man), "I yam what I yam and tha's all what I yam."

As I expected and what others anticipated, I "yam" at the tail end of the 150 yard club distribution.  Do I wish I closer to the mean of what looks like a somewhat normal distribution (skewed slightly to higher lofted clubs)?  You bet!  But it's not going to happen.   After a series of accidents, operations and replaced body parts, I've learned to play within my somewhat broken body.

In fact, I've embraced it.  Borrowing another quote from a great statesman, Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) in Magnum Force, "A man's got to know his limitations!"

However, there's a little extra satisfaction when I can get up and down for par after being short and my playing partner gets on in two on a par 4 and three putts!

I guess it's old man-short hitter revenge!

Interesting approach. I always know what's short/center/long of the hole but don't really gauge what the better miss(even thought that's likely what it's going to be!) will be. Definitely something I'll be assessing moving forward.

Forced carry 150? Smooth 8-iron.
Of the tee and more hazards behind than in front? Sounds like an 9-iron.

If I must carry 150 over a hazard, it's a 3/4 8 iron. If I can roll it to 150 it's a full swing 9 iron. But I gotta watch full swinging my short irons. Sometimes I get a bit too much spin and the ball comes back a bit.
