Favorite Bourbon

Recommended Posts

I was looking for the a thread, I thought I saw before. I couldnt find it so, I thought I would post here.

So few probably know this about me but not only do I collect golf clubs, but I love bourbon. So this past week, I got to go full tater mode, and ended up getting some cool bottles and drank some of my in-laws. I love to try new stuff.  Favorite part about bourbon is the same as golf, the ability to talk to others and be able to have fun conversations and learn about others. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. 🙂

I'm a big fan of the Yellowstone Single Barrel by the fairly new Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon (pronounced "leb'nun"), Kentucky.  As a new distillery, I'm sure they're sourcing barrels elsewhere, but they've done a good job of it as is to be expected considering its half-owned by decendents of J.W. Dant and the Beam family.

There's also an interesting story behind the label.  Yellowstone was a pre-prohibition label, but was revitalized by the Glenmore Distillery mid-century.  In the 1970s, there was a push to dam the Yellowstone River in the Paradise Valley north of the the park.  Legendary wildlife conservationist Jim Posewitz, with the help of some friends, convinced Glenmore to redirect their sponsorship of a golf (or perhaps tennis) tournament to a PR push to highlight the potential impact of damming that river. They hired Rand to help organize a float trip during the peak of the aspen foliage.  The damming effort was highlighted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Life Magazine.  Jim hadn't exactly gotten approval from his superiors and the Montana Governor had him fired from Fish Wildlife and Parks over it, but he'd saved the river.

The new distillery carries on the tradition by supporting conservation efforts.

I'm partial to wheated bourbons, so I like Basil Hayden and Makers 46. My everyday bourbon is Larceny. I've had some other great, more expensive bourbons, but I buy/order them on an exception basis - so I'll leave them off.

I am also partial to wheated bourbons. I am a big Maker's fan but also I am a buffalo trace! I love doing the bourbon trail, the only type I wont drink is, rye unless it's in a old fashion.

I need to try Yellowstone! If you like the stories try to check out Bardstown Bourbon Company or if you like TN Whiskey, my favorite story is at Nelson's Green Brier Distillery. Those are super cool! I also identify as a fanboy fanboy who appreciates a good story that ties together multiple of my passions.

I just recently got into bourbons but I’m a big Irish whiskey fan and have a decent variety of whiskey in my collection. My everyday bourbon pour is wild turkey 101 rye or regular just depends on my mood when I’m in the store. I have a bottle of Weller 12 I’m waiting to open but that’s another one that’s really good in my opinion.

I have a pretty big bourbon collection but not so much Irish whiskey. I love Wild Turkey 101 and the Kentucky Spirit(basically a single barrel wild turkey 101 but at higher proof). Huge BT fan and love some eh Taylor, and weller lines! This is part of my collection. IMG_6347.jpeg.f970c279d1b69a71ab9eed30a6baf215.jpegIMG_6346.jpeg.33147ee3a219031a0420973e3d5ee824.jpegIMG_6320.jpeg.63d6a665e84c778d35ac5bf9f95dc791.jpeg

I’ve tried most of the major bourbons, and I’m partial to those with a good oak finish.  Right now I’m finishing off the last of a bottle of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked but spirits are very expensive here in WA… taxes!!

This is my all time favorite, but it hasn’t been available for years since

Both are great for meeting new people and sharing stories. I had a fun experience recently trying some unique bottles, including White Hennessy, which was a real treat. It was smooth and added a nice touch to my collection. The best part was discussing it with friends and hearing their take on different bourbons. If you’re into trying new things, keep an eye out for smaller distilleries or limited editions. They often have interesting flavors and can lead to some great conversations.

The George T. Stagg / Old Fire Copper (O.F.C.) / Buffalo Trace Distillery mash sure smelled great driving into work this morning.  If I can't be playing golf, at least I get greeted by the delicious smell (which always reminds me of the equally delicious combination of country ham and fresh yeast rolls).

It seemed to me that Buffalo Trace Bourbon advertised profusely during the Olympics golf competitions.

A friend was having a birthday, so I decided to gift him with a bottle, only to find out that all of the surrounding liquor stores had none in inventory.

Two weeks later, our local ABC Liquor Store (South Florida) got some and it was under $30.

I'll let you know how he likes it!

After retiring from the PGA of America, I did some demo days and club fitting for various OEMs.

Buffalo Trace and Bullett are pretty damn good. I’ve admittedly become more of a fan of Irish Whiskey and some of the lowland Scotches. But bourbon will always be great!
