When and why you started golfing?

I played my first few rounds at 14. However in the next 24 years I may have went 6 rounds. For the past 2 years I been playing non stop. Enjoy the good times with friends. Even though our handicaps are in the 20's.

I started 6 years ago when two things happened: 1. A few buddies started playing; and 2. I was starting to get invited to corporate functions and wanted to be able to at least hit the ball. It then turned into my #1 hobby and my wife would even call it #1 obsession lol

I used to make fun of all my buddies that were nuts about golf. I thought they were crazy to go chasing after a little white ball for football fields at a time...lol.

 

They shanghaied one day and made me go with them. Well.......... I'm a bigger golf nut than any of them now. That was close to 17 years ago when I was 40. Ya just never know!

I was put into indentured servitude by my Grandfather when I was 8 yrs old, to caddy for him at the new public course in my hometown.  I learned how to play and the etiquette of the Game.  Got my own clubs(hand me downs) from my Grandfather) which were hickory shafts that same year(1959) and started hitting little white balls around the State Capitol Grounds next to my house.  I later got some used Powerbilts from my Grandfather who also gave me a new set of irons for high school graduation.  Now, 57 years later, I can still recall my Grandfather's weekly foursome, with me pulling the BagBoy cart up and down the rolling hills of Juniper Hills Golf Course. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him when I am on a golf course.

For me, it was 1999. Got called into my doctors office for a conference call with my knee surgeons including the one who was managing me long term. They told me your knees are done but we know where you can go. Being an x hockey player I asked the bar as there is always a seat available for us. They said, no; go to the golf course as you will find others that played competitive sports and you can play forever. At this time I'd lost my Grampa who played golf so I went to a golf store and first irons I saw were my still owned Ping ISI Becu (full set) and got all fixed up with Ping stuff that day. Been in love ever since!

Easy. I had always gone here and there with my dad when I was very young. I never really fell for it until 9 years ago when I inherited my Dad's clubs after he passed away. Been hooked ever since I my addiction has only gotten worse lol.

Played my first round in 1991 while on a 2 week business trip to California.  I was 44.  Seven guys were going to play on our Sunday off, and they needed one more for 2 foursomes.  It was pitiful but I was hooked.  I couldn't play softball, basketball, and volleyball anymore because my knees were too bad, so golf seemed like an easy game to pick up.  25 years later, I am still trying to pick it up.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far. Fozcycle, sounds like a great memory. A regret, I wish I would of took up being a looper back when I was 14.
