I don't know Joe... these don't turn me on like some of the other Miura clubs.  They look pretty good, but it's almost the same for me as it was with the HMB from mizuno...  They're known for their one piece amazing forgings.  Anything that goes a new direction you have to raise an eyebrow at.

That said, I bet I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy.... 🤣

No, I agree. I have nothing but love for the Miura forging process having experience it first hand for a few years, but it does intrigue me that they've went this direction. I'm more curious about the model than shocked. I just want to hit them side-by-side with my CB-301's and TC-201's and compare.

I don't imagine they will be difficult to get ahold of, but if they are.........I might know a guy who knows a guy.......🤣

I tend to change driver every 1-2 years. Irons maybe every 2-3 years. I think last year was the first one in a while where I really didn't change anything until the very end of the season when I added the Bertha Mini to the bag. I'm very cost conscious when it comes to buying clubs, I mean it's a hobby and it can be an expensive one, at that. So I'll usually look for closeout deals or good used values.

Or, just make a solid friend like me who knows a guy who knows a guy 🤣🤣🤣

  3. What I planned to type above before being interrupted by work was that this is a contested platform for debate. You have the category of folks who think it's vital to club building, and a category who believe its nothing more than a placebo. I watched the video above and it was extremely informative, I also don't have Matty's ball speed numbers so I searched other tests. What I founds was a coin flip with no definitive conclusion. A hand full of vloggers agree it's essential, another hand full agree it's window dressing to more profits on the back end of a club build. YMMV

My take? Well, that's simple. I would do it to every full swing club in my bag.......but not if I had to pay extra for it.

  4. I do, more with iron shafts than anything else, but I do a lot of it with my drivers shafts these days. I wound up building my own tools for it rather than buy the stuff, though.

  5. For me, it honestly depends on the club type.

Drivers/Woods- I play with as many new releases as possible. Sometimes I switch, sometimes I don't (most of the time I do...)

Hybrids/Utilities- Constant inner battle. I'm always tinkering with different brands/models and types.

Irons- I always test new releases, but I very rarely stray far from my beloved Miura's.

Wedges- I always test in the late winter, and make a decision on gamers before the season starts.

Putters- I update my fitting every offseason, but I very rarely use anything other than my QB8 gamer. We just have a thang.....

  6. Lost my father right after Christmas, and this entire thread reminded me of some of my favorite pearls he dropped on me over the years. My pop was my hero, and we always had a great time no matter what. I can just see some of you guys golfing with us and him saying the below to any of you with a wide grin, and a belly laugh. I guarantee he's up there playing and still talking s**t. Miss that guy more everyday. Enjoy these.

"You cant make a birdie off the tee, but you can sure as s**t ensure a bogey or worse from it".

"Have you ever tried the 'Suck less' approach to this game?"

My little brother scrambles to a solid par "Nice job, Jake, way to battle." I slice my tee shot to the next fairway over and break myself to just get double- "Joe, keep trying, bud"

"How hard you can swing, and how far you can hit it doesn't really matter much if you cant play the ball after it lands"

"Well man alive. You finally hit a fairway. Outdrove me by about 40 yards too, nice job bud. Maybe between now and home you can figure out an explanation to your mom why I still beat you by 27 strokes...."

"That's a nice pullover, son. You're gonna look great duffing your way to a 105 today."

One of our fellow spies on this thread reminded me just how important confidence is as it pertains to one's final decision.  On the surface this would seem not to be important and, in fact, counter to simply allowing the data to drive the bus.  But the more I think about it, the more weight I am giving it... particularly if the data part of the equation is close.

Just something else to think about.... these decisions should be problematic 🤪.

Does that fellow Spy give REALLY AWESOME discounts and advice, and also has a cool af screen name?

  8. This wont be a popular answer, but here goes. When I first started playing (2018) I had a 117 mph swing speed with a slice that wound up 2 holes over, and an average distance/FIR% I'm embarrassed to talk about. I also had a 200 yard 7i that I couldn't control. I lost more money in balls than I did in bets with my buddies, and that's saying something. My first index was 26.5, and I was determined to lower that with my "I'm a collegiate athlete, I don't need help with my golf game" approach. The day after the 2018 season ended and my index actually got worse I made my first appointment for a lesson. Obviously, my Alpha personality wasn't doing me any favors and I intended to make golf my #1 hobby. Over the winter of 2018/2019 I didn't change my game, I learned MY game, and there's a difference. By the end of the winter break, my 117 mph swing speed/1.10 smash factor averages went to a consistent 112 MPH swing speed and a 1.43 smash. I was straighter by A LOT, distance went from around 240-250 to 270-280. My iron play improved dramatically, I became more consistent on dispersion and distance. If I could only putt.......

After the third lesson, my coach talked to me about going for a proper fitting. Although my Callaway Rogue irons were a great product, he was certain they were not right for me. I asked plenty of questions in that conversation, and learned a lot from his answers, and more afterwards with my own research. I booked an appointment with a Top 100 fitter local to me and they were awesome. By the time my session was done I had about 2 pages worth of performance data and club combinations to consider. I wound up choosing the Miura set I'm in now which is in between the game improvement and players distance categories. I know this isn't the exactly the post you wanted to read, but this was my experience having come from a similar place. Good luck on your journey, and I hope you'll update us on your progress.

This write up was great!! 🤣

    Two points I'd make...

    1.  The Mizuno comments were EXACTLY what I had been feeling and thought as well.  You captured my exact feelings.  I hit the 921's when they were released and something was just off.  Not that they were offending like so many other offerings by OEM's or anything, but something was un-mizuno like in expectations of what I had hoped for.  That was the exact feeling I had over the 919's that I'm currently part-time gaming as well.  They perform well, no doubt about that.  However, there is just something that made me say these just don't do that "something" that I was expecting.

    2.  The Callaway's as you say about the 21 forged... holy cow batman!  Hit those in the sim and maaaannn..... Those might be the hands down winner!  They actually shocked me with their ability to make hollow back feel THIS AMAZING and give the numbers they do...whoa!  If I'm being honest they are already beckoning me to throw all my $1 at them like I'm in the champagne room!

The other two are on the must hit list, so not much to say yet on those.

Thank you for you input thought.  Most helpful!

    See? Told you......

I have the stock Elevate 95 shafts in the Apex' now, and although they are not the right fit for me, the performance is still good enough to grab one's attention. Could this be the P790 killer in the Players Distance category? Callaway make a strong argument to support that thought, and the comparison definitely warrants a go, at a minimum a debate.

  10. Well...…I don't think I'd sleep well if I didn't throw my experience in on this. I game Miura CB-301's and when hitting any brand iron those are the benchmark. Anyone who's hit a Miura, Epon, or a Kyoei forged iron knows exactly what I'm talking about. I've got at least 500 in game, on course hits with the Honma TR-20 V, Mizuno JPX-921 Forged, and the Srixon ZX5 irons and I have been thoroughly impressed with all 3 sets. I have just as many with the Callaway Apex 21 set, but only in the simulators. Even though I haven't been able to play the Apex on course yet, they deserve a serious mention to this roundtable. I like the Apex 16's, but the 19's just didn't measure up to other offerings, and that opinion is shared by many. So, without any extra fluff, here's my take on all four. I've ranked them according to which set would go in my bag in the event my beloved CB's got hit by a nuke, but I have excluded the Apex' as I haven't been able to test these on course in game conditions.

1- Srixon ZX5- They just look CLEAN at address. It's very easy to forget I'm hitting a players distance iron and not a players blade. Not too big, not too small, all the right junk in all the right places. I was most impressed by the feel and the way the V Sole interacted with the turf. Seemed to slice through any condition without the feel of the club head getting bogged down on fat hits. On solid strikes it I could almost hear the ball let out a sound like a guy getting a gut punch and the wind leaving his lungs. Surprisingly forgiving, as well. Definitely a keeper, Srixon got this one right for sure.

2- Honma TR-20- Such a well balanced club. Mine are paired with Modus stiff 120's and hard stepped one level. It just feels good in the swing, and that feel translates into confidence that I am controlling the club and my shot. On solid strikes the feel is wonderful. It like flushing a baseball. You just know you hit it square and it just gone. I do enjoy the feedback on the bad hits, but they weren't as forgiving as the ZX5's.....but only just. While the mishits weren't punishing, they did hurt for the follow up shot...and my ego. Nothing worse than pulling out a 7i that goes 175 carry for me, hitting it fat and getting 110 out of it.

3- Mizuno JPX-921 Forged- I have always been a fan of Mizuno, always. I don't know how to say this politely, but I'm not sure it was a good decision by them to introduce the Hot Metal into the Forged heads. It just didn't feel right to me. They look great at address, the performance is on par with previous Mizuno models we've all come to love, but on contact the feel and sound just didnt feel....right. It's like someone else put my boots on and worked a full day in them behind my back, the next day I'd know something was off.

Unranked- Callaway Apex 21 Forged- FINALLY!!! I've been waiting for Cally to pull their heads out and make a firm stand on the identity of the Apex line. Is it an entry level players iron? Is it a game improvement iron in players distance clothing? I know that everyone is Tiger in a Simulator, but if the feel, workability, and performance data on the course matches what I'm getting on a GC4...…. Take. My. Effing. MONEY! They might, and I say again- MIGHT give the Miura's a break well into the spring. I'm not going to spoil it further for any of you. Go to your local pro-shop and demo them and make your own conclusions. This is just my take.

  11. Two buddies meet up at the train station for a ride to their favorite football teams home game. They walk up to the ticket counter and the lady behind the desk turns who around to greet them is a real looker. Absolutely gorgeous, perfectly shaped, and a prime candidate for future lower back problems.

Buddy #1 is completely stunned by her and blurts out "2 Pickets to Titsburgh, please". The young lady blushes and smiles while buddy #1 is devising a plan for escape, or a quick death from the embarrassment. Always the perfect friend, buddy #2 gets shoulder to shoulder with him and says-

B2- Dont feel bad, I really messed up this morning, too.

B1- How could you possibly have done worse than what I just did?

B2- I was having breakfast with the wife and I meant to say "please pass the salt", but what came out was "you f**king c*nt, you ruined my life."

  12. Well, been here forever and this is the first time I've seen this thread. Screw it, if the page is dumb enough to let me type in public, I'm dumb enough to do just that.

    1. How long have you been playing golf? What’s your handicap or normal score? My first season playing golf full time seriously was 2018. I had played before, but only to use it as an excuse to drive a cart while drinking. My very first index was 26.5 in the summer of 2018. Over the winter of 2018/2019 though a few lessons, a proper club fitting, and more range balls than the Kardashian selfie library I had improved greatly. 2019 ended at 13.6, 2020 ended at 14.3.

    2. What do you love about golf? I love having a battle with an opponent (the course) that just sits there and says "You sure you want to ride this train, big boy?". It mocks me, dares me to do better. There's nothing in the world of hobbies and sport to match the feeling of experiencing first hand all of your hard work pay off on the course. I'm an engineer and gravitated to the technical side of the game and that has really taken over. I'm even building my own golf tools now. Name me a sport where anyone can just jump in with now experience and find multiple things to enjoy on this level?

    3. What brings you to MyGolfSpy? Do you already know any other Spies? The further I fell in love with the game the more honest information I needed. After a couple of months of reading other sites, and interacting with members it was clear that MGS was a place I felt like I fit in. When I member asks the community for advice, or information they aren't bombarded with 14 responses that read "Go get fit" from people who might have a little too tight a grip on things. You get good information, people share similar experiences, and the articles.....honest takes on reviews where the authors invite good debate, not belittle you for it. I did not know other Spies before joining, but I've been very happy to call more than a few friend since joining.

    4. Where are you from? What is your home course? I'm originally from Key Largo, Fl, but live in NYC now. Haven't been here long enough to have a "home course", and if I'm honest....I play the majority of my rounds in New Jersey. Hard to make a call.

    5. What are the best and worst things about golf in your region? Best- Plenty of places to play in a close distance, a ton of Golf Mecca courses close to me (Bethpage, for example). BAD- cold weather/winters. Eff all these small number temperatures. And just exactly What in the chocolate covered f**k is all this white stuff on the ground?!?!?

    6. What do you do for a living? Disabled Veteran, retired from offshore oil (ROV's, google it) in 2015 and decided I wasn't ready to retire this young. So, I got a job. I'm an Operations Director for a raw building materials company now.

    7. How’d you pick your user name? I mean, it's a cool name. I was shocked nobody grabbed it before I signed up....

I want to see a club stash comparison of @c_zoid vs. @Golfspy_CG2 vs. @Shank Aaron

Look, Brogey.....my garage is bare for the winter. Once March 1 gets here it'll look like a PGA Superstore threw up all over the place. Not sure y'all want to ride this train come March 2.

Only thing I have at the moment are shafts, a couple of iron sets, a Srixon ZX 2i, a TSi2/TSi3, a couple Betti's, and a butt ton of balls. I never knew I had this big a garage before.....

  14. I get new ones every season just to test. Doesn't mean they go in the bag, I just like gaming the new stuff and experiencing them all first hand. Its a thing with me.....Currently inbound-

    Ping G425 Max and LST 3w, 5w, 4h

Cally Epic Speed Max 3w, 5w

    Taylormade Sim2 and Sim2 Max 3w, 5w

    Srixon ZX5 3w, 3h

Already have the TSi2 3w, 5w on hand.

Great review, thanks for sharing.  It will be interesting to see if others find the consistency to target line and small yardage spread with the G425MAX as Rick did.  That is a significant stat that does not stand out when looking at the LM numbers face value.  And how about the G30 still hanging with todays best of the best.  I would have liked to see him hit a G400MAX for comparison which, according to a LOT of players is (was) the best driver ever produced.

I was honestly shocked that he sided with the Max. I know I'll never have that kind of ball flight and accuracy, I don't care what you put in my hands. I know 2 things about my golf game. 1- I MURDER doglegs with a hard right turn. 2- If you want to know where the OB is off of any tee, get out of my way, I'll show you.

  16. Yep, pretty disappointing. Sorry, Spies. Now we have to wait for Rick Shiels to put up a video. My prediction of his take- "It's just ok, it 'might' hang near the other brands, no where near as good as this Lunar Launch rocket of a Sim2!". Putting that in writing now.....you're all witnesses.....

Big deal for me with these is that AV Orange Raw comes as a no charge custom option. That's massive, as is the fact you can get either the 55 or 65. I love the Orange but the cost always shied me away. Ping shoots to the top of the board.

On all that is Holy, don't overlook the Rogue White. That shaft is absolutely filthy to be a stock offering.
