  1. Alright, so not the mixed bag I was hoping for. In almost all other sports its a compliment to be described as strong, powerful, etc... I guess there isnt much room for that in a gentlemans game.

@DPattGolf brought up a very interesting point. I never thought to look at proportions along with transition speed, but it makes total sense. Maybe a slower/smoother backswing coupled with a slower tempo will give a more effortless look.🤷🏽‍♂️

  2. Everyone has either played with or seen these two completely different types of players. First, the person who looks like they are taking a practice swing but then watch the ball rocket off of his 7i club face and end up 180+ yards down the fairway. Secondly, the person who takes their backswing then proceeds to swing their club so fast you hear the air tearing and the ball whimper before contact. Both are equally impressive for polar opposite reasons.

Both swings are mechanically sound, with distance, dispersion, and accuracy all being equal. Which swing would you rather have?

Yea, clubbing up is probably more appropriate.  I do think many of us fall into that "the 7i goes xxx when struck well" category.  And, when you consider the handicap bell-curve, a very large portion falls into the dosen't hit the sweet-spot consistently.  Interesting question about about club design/categories.  I've often wondered about average yardage spread between sweet-spot and mishits.  Do the GI and SGI designs tend to increase yardage spread?

Ive heard it both ways, I think its a regional thing. Just like some slang, all depends on where youre from. @Shapotomous explained it perfectly. But I wonder as one gets more consistent with ball striking, will the GI/SGI iron yardage be as consistent as a more player oriented iron.

This is a great thread by the way, I love talking strategy and the thought process that goes into the game.

  4. Ive always referred to this as "clubbing up." It follows the exacty situation you guys are talking about. Just because you hit your 7i 160 when you pure it, doesnt mean youll pure it every time.

Do you think this concept is club head design specific to players distance and better players irons? With GI or SGI irons there is the possibility to get that one ball that travels 10-15 yards past whatever the specified distance for that club is.

My wife showed some interest when we first starting dating and I was in college.  Learning from my Dad's story about trying to teach my Mom to drive and subsequently golf, both did not go well, I opted to have her take lessons from at a local course.  If memory serves, we played a couple of 9 hole rounds together at an executive and when the course was not busy.  She made pretty good contact and seemed to be enjoying it.  A couple of lessons later she started developing a couple of blisters and had to take a break from it... we're still on break 🙂

My advice would be to see if she'd be ok with taking lessons and, if so, starting there.  If she takes to it, great.  If not, don't push it.  Good luck.

She is pretty nervous about actually playing 9 or 18 so getting onto the course will be the test to see if she enjoys it. Yup! Lessons all the way.

  6. Hey @tony@CIC I know it was a while ago but I found your write up on the c300s very informative and interesting!

Thats awesome you two share multiple hobbies. I beleive thats key to a healthy relationship even outside of golf!

Great conversation here.  My wife started playing two years ago.  We keep it to family golf, son is 8 and plays very well, and my daughter (6) that does a great job of running around the green and sometimes putts at the hole.  LOL.

Another route that got my wife into it was social outings with friends.  We will have 4-5 couples and play alternate shot matches (Scotch with skins) between all of us.  It allows to alleviate pressure on any certain person within the group.  We have dinner and drinks afterward.  We did have a nice glass trophy that the winners would take Fireball shots out of but not surprisingly it broke one evening. Lol.  Make it more about hanging out with friends and in our case... drinking.

I will close by saying my wife doesn't want to play by herself or anything that serious.  She will play as a family or social which is great by me.

Thats a great set up you and your friends have! Might have to borrow that, we tend to get a bit to competative sometimes. Things tend to get a little wild when fireball is involved.🤣

My lady is just getting into golf. Slow and steady. Only give advice when asked. Let her know how much fun you had playing golf together. Lots of positive reinforcement.

Praying she gets the bug! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Im hoping positive reinforcement in the form of a starbucks latte after a round or range session will help her catch the bug.

I agree with all of the above!!  Encourage, but never provide instruction.  Help her find a good instructor, but let her choose.  It sounds like she has a talent for the game.

My wife started playing in 1964; I started in 1991.  I met her in 1999.  She never could beat me until about a year ago; now she does occasionally but Hey!...  she's 65 and I'm 73; it's going to happen more often every year from now on!!  Doesn't bother me, but it does motivate both of us to improve!  Best of luck!!

There is no way Id try to give instruction with the current state of my game(trying to break 100). Id give advice went asked, with a very strong disclaimer.

I find that truly awesome, why be batman and robin when you both can be batman.

My wife decided to take some county-level classes to learn a bit, so she could occasionally play with me when we went on vacations.  That's it, a couple of times a year was all she imagined.  Then she got hooked, and now she plays as much as I do, maybe more.  So what did I do?  Very little.  I listened to her talk about her instruction, so I could help her remember bits of it when she needed help.  I NEVER tried to instruct her myself.  I encouraged her to play, at least some of the time with me, but also to play in ladies' groups.  That's it, she just loves to play, and loves to compete.

As for you, I suggest the same.  Help her get lessons, help her remember the lessons when she needs help, but don't provide your own instruction.  Encourage her when she wants to play, but don't force her to play, or coerce her into joining you.  Encourage her to play with other people, unless you really prefer to have her with you every time she plays.  It has to be her choice to take whatever steps she takes.

I agree 100%. She has to want to and whats the point if its not fun... Its crazy how fast someone can get the golfing bug. Same thing happened with my pops now wife. She just plays for fun, doesnt keep score and can keep up with him. Hes a 14 handicap.

Currently waiting on a TSi3 driver which was suppose to arrive yesterday, but now shows no update on it's where abouts other than it's on its way.

Also waiting on a Sim head which was shipped over a week ago but showed a status update that it arrived att he post office it was shipped from.

I'm very understanding that they are very busy, but I don't think that is the only issue. I had a new mailman a few weeks back, and he said to me, "I like doing it cause it's an easy job", meanwhile he mixed up me and my neighbors mail multiple times that week, which is why I approached him.

Ive experienced a package dropping off the radar and randomly showing up on the doorstep. Hopefully thats the case for your TSi3, and sooner rather than later.

Sometimes it feels like this guy is handling the mail...

  10. I want to hear how you guys got your significant others into the game or vice versa!

Im just getting serious about golf, got fitted, have lessons scheduled and have played a round a week for the past 2 months with range time in between. My girlfriend saw this and has been hinting at getting started as well. Took her to the range and out of the 30ish balls she hit, more than half had a baby draw on them!! I was floored as my good days are when I can hit the majority of them straight. Her parents are retired and gold damn near everyday in Florida and offered to pay for her clubs and lessons as well. Now I just have to worry about her surpassing me.

  11. Hey guys. Want to give yall some closure and thank everyone that chimed in and dropped some knowledge to help me make a good informed decision.

So I ended up going with the wilson staff c300 forged +2* up, kbs tour 105 stiff shaft .5" over, and some midsize GP CP2 grips. Hit them on the GC2 and thought, "these numbers and ball flight cant be right." So played 18 yesterday down in canon city, CO and was blown away! Coming from my standard length and lie uniflex shafted Wilson Ci11s, Contact was night and day, way more consistent. My misses went from wicked hozel rocket slices that went more right than down the fairway to pushes that were in the right rough or just OB, even managed to pull one or two which was unimaginable with my old irons.

Im converted, I used to be in the camp of lessons and pracrice can overcome any club. Now seeing how much a fitting can help your game its a no brainer for anyone who golfs regularly.

I played a set of Cleveland CG16s for 10 years, five of them avidly (my first five), and    five years after kids maybe one to three rounds a year. Two weeks ago my father in law lent me his old Wilson pI5s and I am a big fan but they aren’t a long term solution. They are standard length and not mine to adjust. He is a scratch golfer and after our round on Sunday thinks my next set should be some form of player irons. What forged irons from the last five years or so should I be looking at? I don’t need extra distance and want to feel mishits, I’m at the range more than the course currently and putting in the good work. I’m 6’4 and need longer clubs that may need to be bent upright a touch. Any sub 900 dollar sets that are a practical no miss if you don’t need the latest, greatest, longest and most forgiving club on the planet?

I was just in the same situation you are in now. I second the iron fitting, taking those specs and finding a set of new or used irons w/shafts online. I just picked up a set of Wilson staff c300 forged(5-pw) for $389. Best price I found used or new. Then ebay will probably be your best bet for everything else. As long as you look at the sellers ratings you should be safe. Pieced together a full set for $745 shipped and adjusted.

    Happy hunting!

They also have the 699 series which are basically the same head in conventional satin finish.  Good find/price on the C300's; sounds like those were kind of your preference anyway. Hit em well.

I was eyeing the 699s until I found that deal on the c300s, Ive hit the c300s so its more piece of mind than anything.

In case you're unaware of how the DBM (diamondized black metal) finish works, it's actually not a coating like the cheap PVD that many major OEM's use. The coloring is implanted into the metal during the forging process. The clubs aren't actually pure black so much as a dark graphite. If you've ever seen the Cobra King MB/CB line or the hogan's, it's the same look.

To give reference, take any set of chrome, steel, silver colored clubs. Play them for a couple years and the color really doesn't change, but the finish just gets dulled a little. I played my DBMs for almost 3 years before switching to the TS-1's and the color went from dark graphite to very dark grey. With a cleaning of WD-40 from time to time, the wear is barely noticeable.

DBM should be the industry standard but sadly it's not. OEM's will save a few bucks with PVD.. and by a few I really mean a likely meaningless amount but that's their thing I guess. And it almost ensures that the customer will be back the next year for another new set because their clubs will look like trash. It's a sad story.

So all that said, if you like the look of black clubs, as long as they're DBM finish, you won't be disappointed.

Just a note on the TSW's, they don't have "micro grooves" in the sense that most others do. I'm talking about the mini milled grooves in between the grooves or patterned around the face. The do however have about 1/3 more grooves than most and as they're spaced closer together and the actual milling of the groove is slightly narrower. What does that mean for performance? Nothing at all. They perform as good as ANYTHING!

the more I practice, the luckier I seem to get..

Thanks for dropping that knowledge! I have nam flashbacks of the PVD finish wearing off of my Ci11s. Next wedge will for sure be a Maltby.

You can read my review of the TSW's here

Others have chimed in and given opinions of other wedges from Maltby.

I still absolutely love the wedges! And for the price, I figure I'll just buy a new set of heads every year. I honestly can't see these going out of production for a long time.

Also, if you just want to follow a thread about Maltby clubs, you can check that out here

Ill definitely check out bothe threads, thanks for the links.

Im thinking this will be the route I go for wedges. Have to go with the silver, have nightmares of the black finish wearing off...

@RaginCajun Are you still looking? I might be able to help you out... @ncwoz can attest to my knowledge. I am not perfect but I am a fitter and I try to help people save money but still build high performing sets.

in regards to this extra weight can cause some issues with timing and such, and I am not sure what Golf works charges for assembly, but heads can be found if you know where to go and 2nd swing is a place I try to avoid in all honesty. happy to point you in the right direction though.

I am, but like @Kansas King suggested, was able to try out the kbs tour 105 with the D7 forged head. That shaft will work as long as I put a smooth swing on it. So ill most likely play it. Found a new set of c300 forged for $389 on hurricane golf, that price beats some used prices...

@fixyurdivot Go Irsh! The sub70 clubs look sweet and for a bargin. Hope that finish can hold up longer than a few rounds, especially with some whos name is @Manimal26. Ha

  16. @toehold57 My pops is a member at Kings Deer which is why im down there. Last time was about 3 weeks ago and they were still allowing carts. They probably did move to walkong only, so its either the front or back 9 for me.ha

@tyler621 Thanks, that would be sweet and it gives me time to fix some things in my swing.ha I plan on playing patty jewett, how is the course?

I've actually found trying to by heads alone is generally as expensive as buying fully built sets on eBay. You're unlikely to find the C300 heads on their own. I would potentially suggest the TS2s, KE4 Tour+, and STw2 irons from Maltby if you don't care about brand but something that is really playable. The KE4 Tour+  and STw2 can be fully assembled by GolfWorks Custom Shop for under $450 (4- GW) based on a quick run through their website. The TS series would add about $200 to that price.

My guestimate for a C300 forged set (7 - 8 clubs) is you will have to spend around $500 for an okay used set, shafts will be about $27 each retail (~$200), grips will cost about $10 each with installation (assuming normal tour velvet grip), and the rest of the assembly will probably cost at least $10/club. So depending on what you find and what you're builder charges, a set of re-built C300 Forged irons will probably cost you at least $800 and over $900 if you don't find any deals.

A potentially good alternative to the C300 Forged are the i-series irons from Ping (i10, i15, i20, etc.). That have rather compact heads in the scoring clubs and progress more into GI long irons. You can pick up sets of i15, i20, and i25 for much less than the C300 forged (~$200 - $300). You might also check the shafts Ping used on those clubs because they might play similarly to the XP95. You would save a chunk of cash if you don't have to replace the shafts.

I'm not trying to be a downer but the cost of acquiring and rebuilding clubs can add up quickly. I do recommend you get clubs in the ballpark of your specs (perfection is not required) because it makes learning the game so much more natural and enjoyable.

Youre spot on. May keep the stock shafts that come in the c300 forged (kbs tour 105 stiff) to help keep the price down. Im a bigger guy so maybe the extra weight wont hurt. Thoughts about this?

am i missing something here? why wouldn’t the shop that fit you build the clubs for you?

They 100% would. Didnt want to buy an oem built set at ~$700, then pay for shafts, grips, and labor while wasting the oem stuff.

  19. On 11/20/2020 at 12:23 PM, ChitownM2 said:

Honestly, I think you're going to have a hard time putting that together on the used market. C300 heads aren't super common and finding XP95 shafts that are +1/2" is going to be difficult as well. Have you already found the shafts?  Otherwise you're looking at probably $150 to find used shafts + adding the extensions + new grips + cost to assemble the heads after you find them + lie adjustment. In my opinion it wouldn't be worth it.  My guess is that you could safely assume that you could sell your shaft pulls on the BST here for $50 maybe $75 but then you will have shipping and PP fees so not a lot of money to be recouped there.

If you're looking for a non-oversized or "smaller" head then maybe you should take a look at the sub70 model 699. You can order that new and have them made with the midsize grips to your 2° up & +1/2" and get them with the True Temper Elevate 95 shaft which I believe is pretty similar to the XP95 (lightweight, high launch, high spin).  $498 for a 5-PW set with those shafts. Going to be hard to beat that price on heads, shafts, extensions, assembly, and grips plus you'll have new clubs.  Someone with more shaft knowledge should chime in on shaft selection as the KBS Tour V 90 may also be similar and that would knock $60 off the price as that is a no charge option.  Someone here with club fitting knowledge needs to answer that part or maybe go back and ask your fitter which of the sub70 shaft options would be best.

    https://www.golfsub70.com/sub-70-699-iron.html

Otherwise, 2nd swing has some options with smaller heads with your shaft/flex. You could get one of these and just have someone add extensions.

Edit: you can also order a pair of sub70 demo irons to try out for $20, although they won't have the elevate shaft in them but that should give you a good idea of whether the head shape works for you.

I appreciate the leg work!! Ive been looking at 2ndswing, rockbottom and others. They have some great options, im pretty set on the c300 forged since thats what I hit and liked. Ill have to look into sub70 clubs, not too familiar, but at that price its worth a look.
