  1. It was really nice to see that the balls I prefer were all grouped up realtively closely in the grid. It is nice to know that the Bridgestone XS is very high spin ball. And out of my group of preferred balls, I was surprised to see the TP5 as the outlier, as that is probably my 2nd favorite ball right now.

Also if Srixon keeps making the Z-Star any softer, I may be switching to the Diamond. I've noticed that most of the OEMs have softened their non-X tour level offerings. Z-Star, ProV1, TP5 are all a few points lower than in the last test. Wonder why that is.

  2. I tested the Arccos system last year for MGS, and I still have it on all my clubs. After using it for the better part of a season, I have a few things I would like to see fixed.

    1. Echoing others, being able to designate a shot as a chip or a positional shot/punch out. Arccos thinks I hit my 4i terribly because of all the <100 yard shots with it.

    2. The caddie suggestions are terrible. I played a round last year where it didn't recommend driver once. 475 yard par 5 (which is reachable for me), nah hit 5i-6i-GW. 440 yard par 4? Nope, hit two hybrids, leaving me ~30 yard wedge and accept bogey.

    3. Recalculate SG for putting. Any round with more than 30 putts is a negative SG. Considering I'm a 6, and I have it set to show against a 6, I have serious doubts the majority of players at my level are averaging less than 30 putts per round.

Got out yesterday morning with @MaxEntropy, @DiscipleofPenick and his friend Tim at Raintree in Uniontown.

Ooof 49/46 95 in damp conditions. There must be a GPS issue around this course because we all had weird readings, causing club selections to be wrong, so there were quite a few chips from the back of greens.

Fun morning but I played awful including a 3 putt par on a short par 5 which should have been at least a bird if not eagle.

Right, it was weird, every hole was showing about 10-15 yards longer in our GPS than reality. What else is odd is that you have the GHIN app and @MaxEntropy and I use Arccos. And we were both getting odd readings. At least we figured it out and I pulled out the rangefinder for the back 9 and that improved it for all of us.

    In no particular order:

    Kirtland CC - Kirtland, OH

    Brookside CC - Canton, OH

    Virtues GC - Nashport, OH

Hermitage GC (President’s Reserve) - Hermitage, TN

    Sleepy Hollow - Brecksville, OH

    Elyria CC - Elyria, OH

*Boulder Creek GC - Streetsboro, OH

    Beechmont CC - Beachwood, OH

    Mayfield CC - Mayfield, OH

    Diamondback GC - Abilene, TX

Scheduled to play Caledonia and True Blue in July. I’d venture to say they make an appearance on my list after.

*Many complaints with operations/management but the golf course is unique for NE Ohio public golf

Glad to see CLE so well represented from another local on the forum. How are you so lucky to play all those clubs?

As @DiscipleofPenick mentioned above, we played yesterday at Windmill Lakes. Blue tees 6504 yards, except for the first hole because the tent sale was on.

I went 46/42 88 which wasn't good but certainly not bad either. I hit some really good shots and some really bad ones too.

Today is sim day and I play again tomorrow and Thursday.

Even with the short first hole, Arccos said the course was playing a hair under 6600 and several we weren't getting much, or zero, roll out.

I’m our the boot getting insoles made and starting physical therapy. So how’s the 17th 23rd or 24th. I could even do an early Friday round the 15th

I can probably make any weekend date work. And actually I could probably meet you on the 15th if you wanted to do Ashland, Brookside, or Deer Ridge...something in the middle. I'm usually up between 5 and 6 every day so I could go as early as you want.

And because I have too much time on my hands here's the Cbus area courses I am interested in playing for a meetup. Basically what's really high rated or has a famous architect. There's no particular order.

----Champions, Raymond, Airport, and Mentel are all municipals.  First two very good, Champions I think is a bit better.  I have played Airport, lets say I wouldn't travel from Cleveland to play it, haven't played Mentel.

----Deer Ridge I have played, good course, I'd go back.  Similar in my mind to Ashland.

----Delaware, Glenross, Dublin, Royal American all owned by the same company.  Good courses.  Add New Albany and Clover Valley from below to this list.  Maybe Bent Tree as well.

----Thorn Apple is a long, long course.  Not the greatest shape but good value.  Denison I haven't played but it's generally raved about.  Darby is a great value course, challenging and in great shape.  Safari is next to the Zoo and is in much better shape than in the past, but not memorable.  Virtues is a don't miss (used to be Longaberger).  Add Eaglesticks here as well.

----Oakhaven is a good course, but can be intolerably slow.  Echo Springs is a fun course, kinda hidden.

----The last group I have played Rolling Meadows, The Ridge - both decent.  Trout Club is a lot of fun, I enjoy this one quite a bit.  Kings Mill is decent.

More where you are interested, there are too many here to give in-depth reviews of all!

Thanks for all the info. Denison is a Donald Ross so that's been at the top of my list to play for a long time. EagleSticks is the one course down there I've played so that's why I didn't mention it, and I would love to go back. I really just wanted to make sure that if I threw some courses out there for a meet up, it would be places actually worth making the drive to.

I'm in this boat as well.  Not the club's fault... and why I am hesitating to add updates.... yet...

While there is important information that can be shared on offcenter hits (I'm in a cycle of missing everything on the toe currently) and there is value in understanding that performance... I owe it to these clubs to find the sweet spot more often than I currently am.

Totally agree, and the wear pattern on my 714s feels bad for me. And as far as the distance goes, it's not like I was expecting a big jump in yardage, but I figured being close to a decade newer and stronger lofts, I'd pick up 5 yards or so...maybe half a club tops. Just not the case yet.

    Could it be spin?

It would need to be thousands of RPMs more to reduce distance. It could just be that even though they are lower loft, the higher launch of the KBS shaft cancels that out. Also, it has been very humid most of the rounds I've played which is also going to reduce carry distance. And I'm not really hitting them pure yet, so I've got to keep working on that.

Like mentioned by DoP, these are players irons but more so a G.I. players iron. The stronger loft and hollow head are producing longer carry distances for me. I’d say they are similar to a p770. They feel more forgiving than a t100, definitely produce a higher flight but that could also be difference in shafts to me. More testing to come.

What's odd is that so far I have not gained any distance even though they are two degrees stronger than my previous set.

  11. Hey Columbus spies - I had too much free time the other night and went through GolfNow's course database. Here's a list, not in any specific order of Columbus/Central Ohio courses that look good. Most of them have an architect I know about (Ross, RTJ, Hurdzan/Kidwell/Fry, Arthur Hills) or seem to be a great layout. Let me know if anything should be added or removed. Basically if it's been mismanaged and the conditions have gone down the tubes, or if it's a tee time factory with 6 hour rounds.

Deer Ridge -- Westchester -- Pine Hill -- Table Rock -- Airport -- Champions -- Raymond Memorial -- Delaware -- Glenross -- Dublin -- Royal American -- Sycamore Creek -- Mentel Memorial

Thorn Apple -- Denison -- Apple Valley -- Foxfire -- Darby Creek -- Vernon View -- Virtues -- Split Rock -- Cumberland Trail -- Turnberry -- Safari -- Blacklick Woods

And here are the courses I saw that looked interesting, but couldn't find any info on them. So let's call them maybes...

St. Albans -- Bucyrus -- Village View -- Oakhaven -- Valley View -- Raccoon Valley -- Homestead Springs -- Groveport -- Clover Valley -- Kyber Run -- Echo Springs -- Pebble Creek

Rolling Meadows -- The Ridge -- Chapel Hill -- Irish Hills -- New Albany -- Mastodon -- Trout Club -- Willow Run -- Shelby Crossing -- Bent Tree -- Kings Mill

Got out with @DiscipleofPenick for an early round today at a new (to me) course. Used to be private, but now public. After a few years of being in disrepair, it is getting better. I really like the layout - tons of variety (wide open, narrow, target holes, etc.). Of course it doesn't hurt that I broke 80 for the second time ever (39/40 for a 79). Driver wasn't great, although it didn't get me into too much trouble, approach about normal but I felt like it was better than Arccos gives me credit for. Short game and putting were insane - 23 putts total with 13 1-putts, but chipping did the heavy lifting to get me in a position to make those putts. I chalk it up to the amount of practice I've been doing for the Sub70 wedge test. It also helps that I had back-to-back birdies on 2 and 3 (a par 5 and a par 3). Only one double thanks yanking a hybrid into the woods on a par 3. Tale of the tape:

I also had a pretty solid day shooting 40-40 with 2 birdies of my own. I had a bad bogey streak from holes 8 through 14 so I played the other 11 holes in +1. It was close to being an A game day, but I can live with a B+. The course is Tanglewood on Cleveland's east side suburbs. They also hosted PGA events back in the 70s and 80s.

Depends on which date, our CIC condo is sold  and we're in the process of moving to Florida..

I hope you can play with us one more time before you leave Ohio. Also, I need an excuse to go play Eagle Creek, Sawmill Creek, or even Valley of the Eagles if you want to meet up. Right now I can get out during the week too.
