I've replaced a couple of irons with hybrids for added versatility. Does anyone else think hybrids are a must-have in today's golf bags, or do you prefer sticking to traditional irons?

I have loved playing hybrids for years and only bag from a 6 iron down.  I play a 5 & 4 hybrids.  One thing I have found in my game is that playing a stiffer shaft in my hybrids has helped my hit them straighter.  I may have lost about 3 yards with each but it is well worth it to be straighter.

  2. I have a few the slow play thing is real.

I hate when someone stands behind me where I can see them in my peripheral vision.  I don't like when people go up by the green before I get to hit and distract my eye from the target, I waited for you to hit you can wait for me it's not my fault I out drove you.

Course peeves:  Sand needs to be in the bunkers and raked.

I hate designs that you can land in the fairway and bounce hard right or left into the water because of the fairways slope that you can't perceive from 250 yards away.  I should be rough if it slopes that hard.

Really you better be a really good golfer if you scream and cuss after bad shots.  What do you expect really.

I think my main concerns were around fatigue and wear. That’s why I was thinking more of the “like new” clubs that may not have taken a lot of hits. Mostly focusing on woods. But was just waiting for someone to say “be careful of ….” Which just doesn’t seem to be the case.  Side note. I played Ping Eye2s for years and still have a Ping Anser Cu putter

If you loved the Ping Eye2s and Ping Anser Cu putter I would highly recommend The Iron Factory to have them regrooved and refinished.  The putter check out The Golf Garage for custom refinishing.  Both are cheaper than buying new and you know you like them.

If you have a driver shaft you like you can retip it to the brand you want to switch to for cheap and get whatever head you want.  I have a tip I use that is universal with any brand.  I have used this shaft with a Taylormade, Callaway and now Titleist driver head.

Iron are good for decades.  Woods are good for a few years why buy brand new for two more yards over the previous year.  Let your buddies buy the newest if you see a great improvement for them Get one and drop it on your go to shaft.

A cool side note: I just read an article that said in LIV where many of the players have no club contracts the most played driver brand is Ping and many guys are using models that are a a few years old.

  4. Well, I think it is a great idea if you have been fit in resent years and have a shaft that really works well for you.  A few years ago I purchased a driver shaft tip that can fit any major driver because I went through a full fitting and the shaft is a great fit for me.  Two years later I switched brand of driver but kept the same shaft making the transition seamless after matching the swing weight for $15.

I went and got fit for new irons and 1 year later had the brilliant idea of having my favorite irons from the past regrooved and refinished, and the shafts swapped for the ones from my fitting and sold the 1 year old irons for a more than the work on the old irons.  I love those irons all over again!

I have also had wedges regrooved (not playing them anymore, wore them out again).

Refinishing old putters I buy on ebay for a song has been a side hustle for a while now.  Buy an old Ping or Scotty cheap get it refinished in a unique way and you can sell them as one of a kinds for a Grand or more.  Especially in the asian markets.

  5. I play the set pitching wedge from my KZG irons.

    I have a Cleveland CBX 50*

    I have a Taylormade MG 3 Tiger grind 56* bent to 54*

Currently I have a Renegar 58* which I will replace in March with a Taylormade MG 4 Tiger grind 56* bent to 58* that I need to put a grip on.

I hav two brand new Renegar 58* wedges I would be willing to sell for $100 each plus shipping if anyone is interested.

  6. My current test list will include the Callaway Chrome Tour & +, Taylormade Tour Response,  Titleist Pro V1 & x & left dash.

I really hit the Tour Response straight and the iron gains (5 yards) may out weight the driver distance losses (5 yards).  These are what I play in the cold weather I find I loss less yardage to the cold with these.  I have no issues with spinning them from 30 yards and in and my irons bounce once and stop which is all the spin I want.

If I don't fall in love with one of these I will look at Maxfli, Srixon, Snell and Vice.

  7. It really is dependent on so many things.

$$$ on the line in stroke play just putt it baby.

$$$ on the line group match play if you can't will the hole.  IT's Good from anywhere.

$$$ same as above but if it will win the hole putt it from anywhere.

Fun golf nothing on the line I work from, would I sweat this putt?  Are we playing slowly?  Is there anywhere to go if we speed things up?  If its a friend that needs to get his head right?  Is it for boggie or worse?  I don't care what score you write on the card if its a fun round.  I likely am not even writing scores down because I am practicing something.

  8. Hey I just got prompted to this feed and you likely already made your move on this issue.

I took three wood out of my bag years ago and switched to a 15* hybrid.  It was just about 15 yards shorter than my 3 wood.  I switched because I struggled to hit woods out of the rough.  I had about a 20 yard fade with my 3 wood.  I played that way for about 6 years then I moved to a different club that needed the yards of a three wood and had bigger fairways.  I put a stiffer shaft in it when I started playing it again because I had received a shaft like I had in my driver but in a strong instead of a stiff and it straitened my ball flight.

I would highly suggest keeping the 3 wood or switching to a 16.5* fairway.

  9. How about a data comparison between like item winners from the last year 3 years for anything that is being evaluated.  With the restrictiveness of the rules the windows for improvement seem to be closing to minimal gains.  The most important thing for my game may be very different than what another player may be looking for.  I may want the straightest ball, iron or driver and someone else may be looking for gear that will draw or fade more easily.  We need to know if the new gear is better than what we could pick up cheap from the last year or more.

I would also like to see more japanese forged irons.

How about some boutique brands of putters, wedges and irons.

It remains to be seen but it seems like the way the ball is going to be designed (and again, this is like 7 years away for Ams so the ball manufacturers will get better at it as they always have) the impact will be less on slower swing speeds. So while they are estimating 10-15 yds at the top level for drivers, they are estimating less for LPGA and high level ams (7-10 yds) and then even less for slower swingers probably 5 yds or less. And that is with driver. With a mid iron it is probably like 2 yds. If true, we have spent 66 pages arguing over 5 yds give or take with the driver.

  11. I had a set and gifted them to my cousin who loves blades but had a crap set.  He is in love with them.

I had those wedges for a couple years and someone stole them from the club room at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.  They gave me some Vokey Wedges and smile.  They were fine but not as soft and sweet as those wedges.  If you need them to be reworked check out The Iron Works they are amazing they will come back like new!

  12. I got some KZG irons after a blind fitting back in 1997  I loved them!  I played them down to scratch.  I loved them and wore them out.  I git fitted again and got KZG ZO blades.  Played them down to +3.8, I loved them too and wore them out.  I got into my 60's & my eyes lost some focus and I lost swing speed and yards.  I went to Club Champion and fit to PXG gen 3 they were nice but didn't hold greens like I was used to.  I figured it was just me.  I won some Gen 6 (for a hole in one) and had the same issue.  I will say both the PXG irons felt great.  Life happens and I was in Florida visiting my son without my clubs and he asked to play.  He had my old KZG Forged III irons in the garage so I regripped them and off we went.  I loved them all over again!  The ball hopped and stopped like in the old days and they still felt like butter.  I had to get a set again.  LOL they are not available anymore.  I took hem and sent them to be refurbished at The Iron Works.

I love my hybrids.  I would suggest getting one level stiffer than your irons if you are not getting fitted for them.  The longer shafts tend to bring a bit more fade than most people expect.

  14. This is a bunch of B.S.!  They are not taking a big enough change to make the old master courses, pro viable again.   They could freeze the ball distance like they did with driver C.O.R..  Ball companies would shift to making balls softer to be straighter off the tee, longer with irons and give better feel.  They could limit compression i.e. softer is shorter.  The last few years the U.S.G.A. and R&A have lost track of who they serve.  They are not the professional golf association they need to let the tours control their events and let the rest of us enjoy our fun.  The new rules to speed up golf were great and should have gone further.  Most golfers play divots as g.u.r. and play o.b. and all hazards as a lateral hazard & cart path only days are lift clean and replace.  Give us back our square grooves and let us anchor our putters if we want to.  Golf is meant to be fun for everyone.   We don't expect to become pros we just want to have fun.  They could make the pros play smaller drivers 425c.c. should take the 5% off and leave us alone.

No of that is the point!  The point is Why must the mass of golfers be penalized for the less than 1% of golfers that hit the ball a mile.  The Elites have lost touch.  I don't care where they play their tournament...

  16. I am back.

Well, I keep reading about just moving up to a closer tee.

So millions of golfers have to move up a tee box to enjoy the game?  Why???

Why are the elites of the overseeing bodies of golf making the masses move forward to enjoy the game.  The simple fact of the matter is golfers over 60 have already lost that many yards and moved forward.  What do the older golfers do that have moved forward and have no more boxes to go forward?

The majority of golfers are 55 and above.

The millions of average golfers have to pay the penalty. Just so the old country clubs with the uber rich memberships will be able to host Major tournaments.  They just need to feel better about themselves.  God forbid their beloved clubs not host a Major or be embarrassed by the pros overpowering their beloved courses making them look easy.

Millions of golfers don't matter if they have to lose the joy of hitting a great drive from the men's tees.  Our dignity be damned, we can move forward...

I can't believe that we have to eat crap so the elite clubs, that we can never play get to feel better about themselves!

Let me guess all the members of the ruling bodies

are members of one or more elite country club.

I can enjoy golf with a shorter ball for about 12 more years then I will need 100 shots to get around the course and about 5 1/2 hour.  You will have to wait behind me.

I am a well off older conservative.  I can afford to join any club in the country.  I am not a liberal bellyacher.

I don't understand why the majority of golfers need to be penalized for the Elite Golf Class?

We need to speak up and just say NO!
