I have never taken lessons but I think I’m about to take the plunge. Need something to lean on and stick with, especially in the short game.

Take the plunge. It's worth it if you find someone good. Get a pack of 4 lessons and spread them out over a few months. After your first one, you will probably play like crap because you are mixing old swing with new but eventually, you will pick up the right feel.

  2. The Open adds such a great change of pace for the Tour in terms of visuals, shot making, and weather. How come there aren't a few a more links courses on Tour?

I know Trinity Forrest had its chance and USGA Am was at Bandon a couple years ago, but how great would it be for there to be a stop at Cabot, Bandon, Streamsong, or any number of the nebraska/SD courses?! Kiawah had some of these elements and was a huge success. I know a lot of these are resort courses and would take away from guest play for a number of weeks during peak times but I think it would be good for the game. It would be great to see pros and commentators talk about how grass and landscaping doesn't need to look like Augusta.

  3. I know there are a number of threads about carrying vs push cart and I believe that there was a recent study (maybe done by Arrccos or shotscope?) that showed that push cart makes you less tired. Well, my home course is very hilly and while it is nice to have a push cart on flat sections and down hills, pushing it up is never fun. Recently one of my playing partners started carrying and found that walking up a hill and being able to lean forward with bag on your back was much more comfortable and easier than the push cart.

So, I was thinking how cool it could be Arccos or shotscope to be able to use the elevation data they have of the course, ask if the round was walking or riding, and if walking is it push cart or carry.

What are your thoughts, is it easier to carry your bag on a hill course or use a push cart?

  4. Some may disagree with this but I’ve found that Biloxi MS can be done on a budget with quality courses. Stay either nearby or find a casino deal. Go in the summer (yes it will be hot and humid). For $125 you can play unlimited at the preserve golf club one day and it includes a meal. Then do a twilight or 2 rounds at Grand Bear which wouldn’t break the bank either. If you have any money left over, the casinos will gladly take it. The casino food and buffets are actually reasonable compared to other resorts and casinos.

  5. I know @Mtbryant01 has played most these, not sure about Cambrian Ridge. What I've heard is that Cambrian Ridge is good course that does not see a ton of traffic. Greenville is not a big city or even a suburb. It probably sees most of the play from people driving down 65 to go to the beach.

2- I've only played Judge and Legislator. Senator had green renovations recently. You can't go wrong with any of the 3. Judge feels more like the premier course, a championship/tournament course that can play long and I think most (all?) are along the river. Legislator would be a course I could play everyday and I think the regulars tend to favor this one with great greens and a variety of hole layouts. Senator being a links-style layout looks like a fun challenge with the multitude of pot bunkers. It seems more novelty to me. I don't think the red clay of alabama is similar to the sand deposits of the british isles and we don't have the wind either, but nevertheless it seems to be in good condition.

3- @Mtbryant01 I think Grand National courses would be more similar to Capitol Hill than Cambrian Ridge just being on the lake but with the RTJ trail, you can't really go wrong.

Check the RTJ website, they publish their maintenance schedule and stick to it pretty good. You should also look into a all you can play monthly pass if you are here for longer than a week. I've heard for out of towners they offer some pretty sweet deals.

I’d like to see Chris , Tony , Harry and Miranda go to a fitting . Then have a second fitting with the same company but different location. Just to see if the fitting is the same.
The company does not need to be named.
The no putts given crew would need to not influence the second fitting .

I like that but an interesting twist would be if MGS and TXG fit the same golfer and then got together to discuss the data and why they made the equipment suggestions they did.

Bringing 2 data centered equipment nerds together!

  7. I'm finishing Coyne's latest book currently and I am really enjoying it. Although I have never played in Ireland or Scotland, his sentiment about American golf really resonated with me (too private etc.). BUT He was successful in taking me on a journey to become more appreciative and proud of American golf.

Who else has read it? What are your thoughts? Favorite course he highlights? What did he leave off?

  8. This would never happen with the big brands but I would love for the group to sit down with an OEM and go over the data they collected during their testing. The group could have a discussion about how they may have missed the mark or how they had to sacrifice in one area to improve another, etc.

It would probably have to be a couple of generations back so they wouldn't trash their marketing campaign of current clubs. I recognize this is not very realistic too haha.

  9. I echo what everyone else has said about the course, looked like a video game.

I don't know if I think The Match has run it's course. I enjoy watching mic'd up exhibitions but the live format makes for a lot of commercials and pictures of people just sitting in their carts waiting to hit. Phil has gotten comfortable with entertaining while still being competitive but for many of the other players who have been in one of these live exhibitions, there is a lot of silence. How many of us get home and our wife/gf ask what we talked about... "ummm, golf" "For over 4 hours?" "yup".  There is not going to be major banter, or trash talking. That only happens when you get your regulars together and matching celebs and pros who rarely play together is no different than the Wednesday charity scramble of a tournament.

I think the format needs to change. Film the match, edit out the sitting and waiting, add in JT to do color commentary while watching the film. Do funny replays of the wild shots. Make it 2 hours and it would be a huge hit. Shout out to No Laying Up for doing something very similar with their Wild World of Golf series.

  10. Similar but different - I'm seeing more driving ranges and practice areas playing music. I actually really like that, it's a nice touch at a destination course with a music that fits the course's theme (mountain course with bluegrass music, beach course with beach-y music). The Golfers Journal interviewed Don Rea recently and he talked about how his local muni course changes the music the play throughout the day as the players change (early mornings- classics for the older crowd; later afternoons- more todays hits for the high school and younger group practicing after school). A little something in the background never bothered me.

  11. @hckymeyer I love those ideas. Over the past few months I’ve tried to approach golf from a much more relaxed point of view. I’ll switch tees for a couple of holes, see how I score on a hole with no driver or 3 wood for a round etc. This mindset has made me so appreciate golf for the fun that it is.

So power to the Supers! Setup the course however you want as long as it’s fair. If you don’t like where your typical tees are set, move to another tee for that hole.

Sometimes I feel like we put on our golf costume (fancy shirt, shoes…) and think we are 1 good round from qualifying for the US open lol. Let’s just have fun and compete with friends.

  12. I noticed over the last year that once colors were selling out, they weren’t replacing. They posted today on their Instagram that the lite stand bag is officially retiring. I know Sun Mt and Ping Hoofer is a fan favorite but I’m always looking for something a little different.

I’m excited to see what the next generation of lite stand bags will be from Vessel. Anyone have any guesses what it will be?

  13. Congaree GC looks awesome. I'm really happy to see this course be a stop on Tour. Unfortunately with the recent rains, I don't think its going to play as firm and fast as it is designed but if all goes well this weekend, I would much rather see this type of course on tour than somewhere like TPC Craig Ranch. After watching the US Womens Open and The Memorial hack it out of super thick rough, I'm ready to see balls roll into tough collection areas.

No predications from me this week. It's going to be a final tune up before the US Open, so anyone's guess IMO.

  14. Good discussion here - but it makes me wonder. Are name brand loyalists (TM, Titleist, etc.) interested in trying some of the DTC balls after these Ball Lab reports? Snell was top last year but is looking fairly even with Vice but now Cut DC is making a push.

I think DTC brands have a place in the market but the extra $15-$20 for name brand premium balls seem to actually be getting you a better product. How much better is tough to quantify but the Ball Lab is a step in the right direction . Thanks MGS for Ball Lab!

First off, the Arccos Link is a real phone and apple watch battery saver. It missed just one shot but it never had a problem detecting which hole I was on...especially on some of the holes that had a close tee box and green. The battery lasted the entire round and it was great getting it linked up before the first shot and then forgetting about it the rest of the round.

If you're an Arccos user and don't like the phone in the pocket, do yourself a favor and get the link. Plus, if the cart girl asks if its a pager, just say yes and that you're a doctor on call. Win-win.

With that being said, I'm curious to see who out there uses a GPS app on their apple watch for golf. I need suggestions. I don't need my phone, link, and watch all running arccos at the same time. I do miss having the ability to check distances on my watch instead of running back to the golf cart to check the phone app or laser the flag. What do y'all like on your watch? SwingU? Golf Logix? Something else?

I go back and forth on whether I would like Arccos. I track basic stats, putts, GIRS, FIRS, penalties, so I see the value in data but I honestly hate having to fiddle with an app while playing. When I'm on the course, I'm trying to decompress and enjoy the game and being outside with friends.

Have you found that Arccos is distracting while playing?
